Well I'm glad you guys got jobs right off the bat no problem. I've been trying since December/January as a new grad. I don't have any connections, so networking isn't possible for me. I've called nurse managers just to be turned down saying they aren't hiring new grads, and have left messages on others' answering machine with no return calls. When I call HR they tell me very little and just say I'll get a call back if they are interested. I am getting pretty desperate for a job. I'm pretty desperate just for an interview. Haven't even gotten one yet. Despite applying for 50-60 jobs. If anyone works on a floor where they are looking for new hires, do you think that you could bring in my resume? Everyone says to network, network, network, but this is the only way I could possibly network.

What floor of MGH do you work on? I heard that was one of the hospitals that has a hiring freeze.

I graduated in December. And I am moving to Mass, from Maine, so applying to where I had my clinicals doesn't work out.

Okay lets fill this with posts.... since so many new grads need this! What other hospitals are taking new grads? I'm interested in Massachusetts hospitals but feel free to post if your hospital is taking new grads regardless of what state you're in!

Sadly moving as far as Texas, California is not an option for me at the moment. I have some unfinished business and have to stick around Massachusetts.

They say 80% of jobs aren't posted to the public, so maybe some nurses out there that are working at hospitals that are hiring new grads can help! Even if you're not in Massachusetts maybe you can help other new grads looking for positions in other states where new grads are having difficulty finding hospitals that will hire them.

Oh, by the way everyone. I took the suggestion of trying to get in touch with the nurse manager. My first call was to a rehabilitation hospital I had applied to the other day. I called the hospital and the man that answered the phone would not direct my call to the nurse manager (he was quite rude) and told me if I wanted to talk to someone about getting a job I would have to talk to human resources. So when I got directed to human resources, the woman told me that the guy I had to speak to was busy on a call and sent me to his voicemail. I left my name and number and I never got called back :/ It was a little uneasy being shot down like that by the first guy I talked to.... :/ So be forewarned, getting in touch with the nurse manager isn't an easy task.

I was recently let go from my CNA job. The census was so low that I would get canceled whole weeks at a time. I wasn't making any money and it was really messing up my sleep because it was a night position. Each night that they canceled me I would be up all night for nothing, because I had slept during the day preparing for a night's work. My move has already been put off, I have no set date that I "need" to move. But my license is only for Massahusetts anyway. Not Maine. I wouldn't want to get another CNA job in Maine, only to find out in a month or so that I got a job in Mass. I do make a small income on a website I own, it's enough to get me by till I get a job.

I feel so desperate to get a job. Birdgardner, I too feel that HR doesn't care at all about your education, GPA, compassion. All they want is experience. But how can we get that experience if they won't give it to you!? I just saw an ad for a job and it said "not taking new grad applications." For a med-surg position! I swear I am so tempted to call these network news stations the next time they utter that nursing jobs are increasing and aren't affected by the economy. If that is so, why are people getting sent home or canceled due to low census and why can't us very qualified new grads get jobs? The problem with getting a job as a tech or something else to get my foot in at a hospital is that I can't afford to do that. I have so little money as it is now and I'd need a good paying job to make the move from ME to MA and afford an apartment and all that jazz.

I have no money to go back to school again. I really need a job to start paying off the loans I already owe.

I know that in Maine, Eastern Maine Medical Center laid off some people. Not just nurses but other jobs. Another hospital further south I heard was having low census as well. Also, hard to volunteer when I'm around 300 miles away from where I want to work (I'm in ME and want to work in MA). :/ I totally would if I could.

Hey everyone, I graduated in December 2008 with a 3.82 GPA (Bachelors program). I passed the NCLEX in February and have my Massachusetts RN license. I have applied to around 40 positions all around Massachusetts and have not heard back on any of them. NOT ONE CALL. I've applied to anything and everything that looks like a position a new grad would be qualified for. I haven't been picky. I know beggars can't be choosers. Does anyone have any advice? I have a great resume, and write decent cover letters. I just don't know why I can't get a job! Michelle PS I am beginning to hate it when people tell me that nurses can always find work or that the poor economy hasn't touched healthcare related workers.

How do you get access to the practice exams? I have to take it this Friday, and I really don't feel prepared at all.

Bah, that's not good news. I plan on looking around the Worcester area instead of Boston. I'm moving down there to be with my boyfriend (that's where he's from) and he plans on going to grad school down there. Before moving down there though, I definitely need to secure a job somewhere there or else I won't be able to afford living there.

ahhh! This is so discouraging. But thanks everyone for letting me know how the job market is down there. What areas in Massachusetts DO need nurses?

I will have my BSN in December. Very soon! I'm just finishing up school and will be taking my NCLEX shortly after graduation in December. I have no idea if they offer relocation money for nurses that move to Maine. It was only something I was curious about because as a student I don't have a whole lot of money and the move and getting an apartment is gonna be expensive. I know that expenses for traveling nurses obviously get paid for. And at least at the hospital I am at right now (for my partnership) hires traveling nurses. But I'm not a traveling nurse. They are obviously special exceptions and they would have to expect that their expenses for moving would be paid for. Thanks for the advice everyone! I definitely need it.

Oh yeah. I have totally intended on getting my license for MA, not ME. Thanks for your advice. I also posted on the MA forum, and I didn't realize that it was hard to get an RN job down there right now.

I will have my BS in December, it is just a matter of passing NCLEX and getting my license to practice. So what I meant was, would a hospital interview me as long as I had my "authorization to test" number. I will be applying for the NCLEX very soon and will have that number handy. I would just like to have a job ready for me once I pass the NCLEX. Instead of starting the whole interviewing process after I've passed NCLEX, further putting on hold getting a job.
