  1. i have known some people that take the stipend and find a roommate on craig's list. of course you never know who you might end up with. there is a hostel downtown if you wanted to stay there until you decided if you wanted to take furnished housing?
  2. thanks for the fast reply ~ i will check with my instructor. i just was looking on the AHA website and can't remember my log in stuff.. lol. could i be any more organized? seems like having my acls would be enough evidence.. ~~ i am a travel nurse and i know it is just handy to have all that stuff even if my company has it on file...
  3. what if you don't even have a copy? i am googling it now, and came across this thread... i know it is an old post but...

ok. we have a thread on the worst things we have ever seen as burn nurses. what about the most uncalled for, 'stupidest' reasons that a person has ever come in with a burn? mine is alway the guy that came in working on his hotwater heat nekkid. i am thinking...k... it is time for some utility work. better take my clothes off..
  5. i fell into burn nursing because i enjoy wound care. if it drains and seems to have a personality of its own bring it to me.... but burn nursing is even more interesting than being an ET nurse, (to me anyway...) because you can have an ER on your burn unit, and it invoves a myriad of body systems... you are always on your toes, and every patient reacts different to such a severe accident.
  6. for me the most difficult is the seeing a pt get so far and then crash. you work so long and so hard with your burn patients, and then you just know they are going to pull through, and sometimes they just don't. there are times too that i think we have had burn patients that need to pass on. i know that can be a touchy subject... so i won't elaborate, but maybe a new thread? for me i balance the good with the bad. when someone comes in and they have a minor burn from bbqing with gasoline it tickles me, and off sets the girl that was stuffed in the trunk by her boyfriend who lit the car on fire. (she lived btw, and looks great..). the first time i had to pull someone's fingernails off it was a wake up call for me. but i still loved my job. it never bothers me at work, but i would say that it does come out in my dreams sometimes.... and well... i could say a couple of other things, but all the sudden i am a bit shy. i am not working burns right now because of a job relocation, but i miss it. i didn't take a burn job because of a drive, and everyday i wake up and miss my "burn job". so i am looking for one now. the reason i say that is that dispite all the ups and downs and physical and mental stress burns can give you, i love it the same. certain things are just born into your heart sometimes.

mayo is great for gum in the hair too. ha. i cannot believe it was used as a long-term dressing... ha. dressing. i love burns.
  8. that is the best. you will be able to relate to your patients on a level that i, and i say this in pure honesty, that i hope i will never have to. i have read books written by people that have experienced burns, and i know that there is no way i can truly understand. i always want to know what my patients remember, and what i can do or could have done to make things better. it will be a blessing to have you on the burn team.
  9. i just have to say i am so grateful to have run across this site tonight. i used to work at the med in memphis, and i miss my burns so much i was scanning the net looking at jobs. a lot of people do not understand how burns can be such a wonderful area to work... i have to say that i do not understand how delivering babies can be such a wonderful place to work... lol. i am so glad to have a place to talk... thanks yall.

burns were my first real wonderful experience as a nursing student. i left it behind to move back to arkansas for a boy... sigh. stupid girl. ANYway, everyday the need to go back to burn nursing beats me in the back of my head, and i ran across this site looking for jobs. i have nursed through some horrific accidents, but then the sick humor of nursing keeps me going. when i get a guy that was burned because he was working on his hot water heater naked, well... and i hope yall don't hate me for this... but a story like that makes my day. i have also had patients recover beautifully after months of being on the unit, and they become like family, which also makes my day. it involves all body systems, and is a thinking job. it is rewarding and heartbreaking and amazing and it will blow your mind. if you enjoy it now you will be hooked forever.
  11. i am planning to go back to school for np, and my ideal job would be on the burn unit, available for everything from new arrivals in hydro to critical assessment and care. i am a new nurse, graduated in april, but have spent the last year and a half on burn unit in memphis. moved back to arkansas, and am not happy in my job now. i love my burns...
