  1. hey there dar15, as a victorian currently in QLD i can agree with the pain of having to pay multiple fees. However i haven't heard anything about a universal form. Perhaps it's the cynic in me, but i would assume it would affect the back pockets of the state organisations if such a registration did exist. Just the same as having to pay for a full 12 months of registration when you graduate in december and renewal is in June
  2. Most standard shifts at hospitals in Australia are 8 hours. All of the shifts on my ward are. Other wards do have 10 hour night shifts and some do standard 12 hour shifts, however every ward and hospital are different.
  3. Hey there and congrats on almost graduating! You're so close! I chose a specialty Oncology program as opposed to a general rotational program around my hospital. I did this because i knew the area, the staff and that this was the area i wanted to go in. Rotational programs are great for a general introduction, or if you're not sure which direction you want to head in yet. If you already know what you want, then don't settle for areas you don't want to be in! have a great time!
  4. oh hon. that's not being preceptored. that's being passed around. clearly you need to speak to your unit manager or graduate educator about your concerns. You need to be finely tuning your skills, not getting used to how someone else operates again and again. hope it all works out for you
  5. Am i the only grad nurse here on the boards? Is signing your name with an RN exhilarating? Is freaking out at the sight of a medication chart that doesn't get co-signed normal? How are people finding their grad years? I'm doing a specific oncology grad program and Monday marks 6 months since i started. I'M LOVING IT! Everyone who works on my ward are incredibly friendly and even night shifts (which i'm currently on!) aren't that painful! I've found the basics for a sucessful grad year *debrief time with your nursing friends with a bottle of red *a good team to work with *a nightlight that slips over your ear *cup-a-soup for those cold nights or times you don't have time for a meal Comments, questions, ideas, stories?
  6. Nana Naps are the best! I also try to find time to have a debrief with a nursing friend at least once a week and catch up with my grad friends for a night out at least once a month.
  7. WOW! Congratulations on all of your hard work so far! As someone who completed their Div 2 (NOT medication) in Vic, then transferred up and did Div 1 in QLD i would certainly say there is an increase in the learning curve once you get into uni. I'm so so grateful that i had my Div 2 knowledge already as it proved to be a great starting point for my Bio knowledge. At no time did i find it "easy", however i think having the Div 2 gave me the advantage knowledge wise, but also that i knew it was the career i wanted before getting into it. I studied with just-out-of-high-school-kids, mother-of-twos, pregnant women and everyone in between. Unis are so accepting of individual circumstances nowadays. I'd say finish your studies, and dip your toes in the nursing world. If you find you still enjoy it and want to continue onwards, then get into a uni course, STAT!!!
  8. Well my rent at the moment is $280 per week for a two bedroom unit and i'm a $10 cab ride from the middle of the city. You can also get cheap flights to melbourne and adelaide from brisbane too. As a Victorian now living in Brissie it's a really great place to live. The weather is faaaaaaaaaantastic, and the atmosphere is very relaxed, especially compared to sydney. I'm a fan of Perth too, however the distance can prove to be a challenge. My advice? Come over and base yourself somewhere over here on the east coast. Get hooked up with one of the national agencies and you'll be knocking back the work - AND you'll be able to travel around everywhere! GOOD LUCK!
