  1. hello out there (out there out there out ther out the out th out...that is an ECHO!) If there IS anyone out there, I'm an RN with a couple years home care experience, been here in New Haven, working home care in Bridgeport for about a year...It looks like this CT move will "stick" after all. Wasn't quite sure when we first got here - getting work was not easy. That was Last summer though; looking for newer, better work at the moment. Would Love to get in a facility and out of home care for a while...any ideas? In any case Hello Out There (insert echo here?) --Johnnie
  2. thanks for the replies. so, the vent would continue to deliver breaths whether or not pt. was breathing (of course the breaths wouldn't oxygenate pt. but they Would continue.) in short, if i look into a room with a vent dependent pt, just because the vent is functioning, this Does Not Mean they have a heartbeat... i was not sure what the vent would do in asystole...
  3. Pardon my ignorance but what would happen? It seems as if the respirations would continue, heartbeat or no...Is that right? Would appreciate any insight - thanks.
  4. thanks so much for taking the time to reply...sorry to hear about Glen Cove but I appreciate your input about your impressions of it...my wife and i will be in L.I. a week from today...i've been able to set up interviews at StonyBrook and NSLIJ - and am very much looking forward to the trip. We aren't at all certain Where we'll live - it really depends upon where i get hired; ideally will live v.close to work...Doubtless I'll have a 1000 questions after some 'boots on the ground' experience & will shoot you our questions then. Thanks again.
  5. wonderful! thanks so much...
  6. hiya. thanks so much for the time you put into these posts on the North Shore Fellowship...I may be following you in a sense - that is, working as a new grad RN in that hospital, although icu may be a year or so down the line...is the pay reduced while you're 'training' and if so, by how much? how's it going? any advice for a new grad RN headed to your hospital or out to that area of Long Island generally? thanks so much and take care, Jetson
  7. DC2RN, I'm a new grad RN and may soon be following in your footsteps...from your experience, what were the best parts of your experiences there. what would you do differently if you had it to do over? many thanks, jetson
  8. hi there. I finished up RN school a month ago and am waiting for authorization to take nclex. my wife and I are moving from the midwest to Long Island - hopefully in the general area of Port Jefferson, Northport, Glen Cove. I would be very appreciative of any insight or experience you can offer - either as a new grad RN, or as a nurse whose seen the new grads go through the hospital: what are your impressions? any advice about the better hospitals for a new grad to work for? From what I can find online, the NSLIJ hospital system seems to hire new grads...I can't tell how they're treated once hired however...Do you have any direct experience or awareness of the system's reputation? &/or are all the NSLIJ hospitals separate and distinct entities? I'm looking at Glen Cove, Huntington, North Shore Univ. I would also appreciate any insights about hospitals in that part of Long Island. The ones I could find online include St. Charles and Mather in Port Jefferson, Brookhaven Memorial in E.Patchogue, St. Francis in Roslyn. Any and all replies greatly appreciated. It's tricky to get a sense of things from so far away...Thanks sincerely, jetson
  9. Greetings. Just finished my RN studies in Minneapolis; should (?!) pass NCLEX within the next month or so. My wife and I are planning a move to New London because she loves the city. Myself, I need to start my RN career on a med/surg floor - ideally, in a hospital with a top-flight new-grad program. In another post I asked about information in this regard. I am So EXCITED to be done with school AND to begin my RN career! I've worked in LTC for 6 mos. as an LPN and have learned very much - but realize I've got a lot more learning to do. Thank you. Jetson (GRN)
  10. Thanks in advance for your time and help... ...My wife and I hope to move to New London, CT in the next couple months. I am a newly graduated RN and expect to pass nclex within a few weeks. Ideally, I'd start my RN career on a med/surg unit in a hospital with a well-regarded new-grad program. Although I've worked 6 months as an LPN I'm still pretty green 8}. Do you have any experience in or knowledge of/New London hospitals? Are you familiar with their reputations, particularly how thorough their new grad programs might be? Looks like there are two - Lawrence & Memorial, New London Hospital. Ballpark wages for a new grad? What's it like to live in New London? I'd appreciate any and all help or adivce of any kind. t.y., Jetson
  11. thanks much for your helpful suggestions. will follow advice. was unsure about malpractice insurance...my co-workers shrugged when asked, again with the "don't worry about it." have completed (!) my RN classes (as of Wed 3:30 pm) and only await my paperwork from school being sent to state and then auth to test! (sigh of relief / gulp). Jet
  12. "...don't worry about it." However, I am soliciting 2nd opinions.
  13. The nurses on my unit, including myself, have been providing care for a hugely non-compliant, dangerously brittle diabetic. We recently sent him to the ER for sustained temp >100. There he c/o substandard care at our facility. The state came in to our facility and also interviewed me and the CNA on duty, on the phone. (We were on the shift prior to pt. being sent to the ER.) Pt. has been re-admitted to our unit. What should I do? Could it be construed that I have conflicts of interest with this pt.? Also, I have been working as an LPN only five months and sometimes feel beyond my "scope of practice" or comfort-level, certainly, in caring for this pt. Any words of wisdom, insight, advice, greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  14. also had a Great experience at the MPLS VA through two clinical rotations. Vets rock indeed. But working there required that one jump through quite a number of flaming hoops...it'd be worth jumping through them though...
  15. hi y'all...i've been lurking on these boards for a while...started chipping away at nursing program pre-reqs five years ago...have been working as an LPN...hope to complete my last class for AD RN this fall - it's a clinical rotation at HCMC...i'm a student at MCTC and love aspects of that school and some of the prof's there...MN is great b'cos it's so easy - low costs of living; decent wages - if only winter started later and ended sooner it'd be purr-fect!
