  1. i hear you all about facebook!! i would love love love to know how a nurse...at work....gets on facebook and says "1 more hour to go" or "uggh i hate 12 hour shifts" and that sort of thing! i just cant understand that one bit, it repulses me....you mean to tell me you have time for that...but not to start that new IV or label/change that tubing???? that stuff is banned at our hospital too, i would totally say something to a coworker if i saw him/her on there..like "do you think you could help me for a sec" lately every single day i work, my 12 turns into 13 13.5 and i literally only sit down for 5 minutes getting organized for the day, getting assignment and hopefully i get to sit for 15 min for lunch and im constanstly on the run all day long.....when i see someone else not busy (more than 2-3 times that day) im not afraid to ask for help, and 10x out of 10, they are happy to help, because chances are i helped them before...if your not busy, getting adequate breaks, then you need to help your coworkers out, it makes your team so much stronger and happier, atleast thats my opinion...thanks for letting me vent!
  2. i run into that too, luckily we have (well majority has) talked it out. the bottom line is that there is 2 much for any shift to FINISH. nursing is a 24 hour job, and i dont know about your mgr, but ours wants us gone as close to 7:30 as possible. so when im getting report i just make sure to tell them what needs to be done with the explanation of "i just didnt get to it" and thats it. when im getting report, i respond with "thats fine, ill get it go home" now granted, were all trying our best(?) but if we as coworkers arent kind to each other?? then what???
  3. thank you all for you input...i started nsg school after 2 wonderful exp w/home hospice nurses and my grandparents...they are the reason i am a nurse, so i always knew that someday that is what i want...i really thought it would be further down the road though? just 2 years in? i will call around and see what they have available, that cant hurt...and as for going to nights? ive thought about it, but i cant get past the mental block of not sleeping w/my husband at night, the $4 more an hour is tempting, but i just dont want to wreck my circadian rhythm right now....plus dont get me wrong, i like to be busy....if im at work, i dont want to be sitting around gossiping all day...i am NOT implying thats what night shift does, but it is nice to be able to sit for 5 min every now and then.......thanks again for letting me vent...nobody that isnt a nurse has a clue of what we go through!!!
  4. and also, i have looked it up online. its not about getting a job, im just asking for helpful and friendly advice from nurses who im sure have felt the same way at one time or another. thank you!
  5. no im proud to be a nurse, i love the "idea" of nursing...teaching, caring, comforting, but in the hospital setting, seriously 75% of my day is calling drs, consults, other depts, and charting....that leaves so little time for actual pt care! i just dont know what other avenues i can take where i really can care for pts more? if there is one? but no, i am not tired of being a nurse, i will be a nurse forever...
  6. oh my god, you just took the words out of my mouth...(or off my keyboard) anyway, i am soooo glad to read all these rants and raves because i realize that I am NOT ALONE! its good(?) to know that these things arent just happening at my hospital, maybe someday changes will be made....what about unions?? out of 6 tristate hospitals i only know of one w/union and i really dont know anyone that works there...i dont know what to do, i really want to stay where im at, i work w/an awesome team of nurses and aides, but its only been 2 years, i feel like im 100 yrs old and im only 33! i need to look at other options besides a hospital maybe??
  7. Hello, I have been an RN on a superbusy MedSurg/Oncology floor in a small hospital for 2 years. Everyday when Im on my way to work, i repeat a mantra "Im gonna have a great day", it just doesnt work anymore. i am just looking for suggestions about what other jobs RN's hold and how they compare...i honestly am not sure what else to do besides hospital nursing and im sure thats pretty much the same all over..sucky. Please share your experience in other nursing arenas with me!! i truly do love being a nurse, but i dont feel like i get to do that at all, just running around all day on the phone, back and forth.....no quality pt care time allotted...HELP!!
  8. Im from Cincinnati and the waiting list after pre reqs to get into the nursing classes, there is a 12 month wait?????? i have heard if you get very good grades during you pre reqs, that you dont wait very long? Has anyone else heard of that??
