Hedis 2005...
Just be aware that it's a job that only last Feb/March thru May. You might not want to postpone your first REAL job that long. The only way I could see you doing this AND working is if you could work week-ends and 1 day per week, and then schedule your HEDIS reviews for the other 4 days a week. It might mean working 7 days/week but as I said it would only be for a few months. When I did it in SoCA, I was usually busy AT LEAST 4 days a week but don't know the demand where you are. I've heard in some places they hardly have anything to do.

Anyone doing HEDIS???
Yes, most companies allow all levels of medical experience, I believe 1 lady in my class was a MA. The company doing the reviews is generally who does the class for same. GOOD LUCK

Hedis 2005...
obxdrmn, Last year when I did HEDIS i worked from home reviewing charts that were scanned into a secure server but when I did on site HEDIS I went to the doctor's offices. Depending on which kind you are doing, would you always have 2 days during the week to go to the offices...MOST aren't open on week-ends. I'm surprised they are only asking for 2 days a week as mine were easily 3-5 days a week, but maybe I just had a larger area to cover with more charts to be reviewed. Try it 1 year and see how you like it...it's not a lifetime commitment GOOD LUCK

Anyone doing HEDIS???
dec12, I, too, worked for PS from here in TX. I live way out in the middle of nowhere in West TX or I would have been glad to go to offices to review charts. When I did HEDIS for 3 years in So. CA, I went all over, occasionally to Palm Springs...a dirty job but somebody had to do it. :D Here in TX they were primarily in East TX. I'd met a couple of the ladies a couple of years ago when I went to Washington, DC to help with a project there and they seemed very professional and friendly. I really liked working for them:redbeathe because they were so helpful if I had a ?? about something. Plus , it was really nice being able to work from home any time of the day or night. Where are you?

Anyone doing HEDIS???
Any of the insurance companies I've done HEDIS for have had a 2-3 day "training" course each year. For those who have done it before, it's just a "refresher" course, possibly to cover new measures.

I am about ready to throw in towel for nursing job
ilmbg, you might try site reviews for insurance companies. I do these and they are VERY easy physically. Depending on where you live you MIGHT have to do a lot of driving. I live out in the middle of nowhere in West TX...next week I go to Odessa (~120mi. RT), the next week I go to El Paso (~700mi RT) and the following week to Amarillo + (~500mi RT) but if you live closer to many cities you probably wouldn't have to travel as far. There is a check off list of things to observe/document at the various doctors offices, clinics and hospitals. The actual site review itself only takes ~ 45min. I get paid for all hours of work (including driving time) plus mileage. You might contact insurance companies and see if they have a need for this in your area. Good Luck :typing

Anyone doing HEDIS???
dec12, I SOOO agree with you. I, too, did charts from home on my computer and LOVED it. Like you said, if you can't sleep you can get up at 2 am in you jammies and bunny slippers and "work". When I did them this year they thought I'd have ~1700 charts but ended up I had less than that....glad I didn't already have the money spent:eek::chuckle. I think this was the first year the company I worked for did it this way so I'm hoping for more next year. This company also paid by the chart and gave a bonus for completion and accuracy. They hadn't mentioned the possibility of a bonus at the start so, when the "extra" check came at the end, I contacted them and said I thought they'd overpaid me., a nice bonus. When I did HEDIS "live" they also paid a bonus for above the required number of charts while maintaining accuracy....monthly I think.

Anyone doing HEDIS???
RubyRN, yes I disliked OB charts too 'cause they took SOOOO long. When I did them, luckily I was paid by the hour rather than the chart. cherish62, the first year I did HEDIS I worked for a company who found nurses for a So. CA insurance company. The 2nd year THAT insurance company decided to go internal and contacted those who did it the year before...after that they had a ready made base. Can you find out from the company who did your HEDIS before, who the nurses were. OR, advertise in all your local papers and many of the previous nurses will see it. zahyria, HEDIS is usually done for 3-4 months in the spring, which is good 'cause after looking at 1200-1600 charts you're ready for it to be DONE Hamyani, check with the other nurse you mentioned and see who she works for. Don't feel bad, I'd been a nurse for 30+ years before I heard of it when my cousin told me about it. GOOD LUCK ALL.

I am about ready to throw in towel for nursing job
Here is my schedule for parttime working. Beginning shortly after the new year I do HEDIS chart audits I happend to have found some that can be done on line but when I lived in So. CA, I traveled all over So. CA doing them. These last ~ March-May. Sept -Nov I do flu shot clinics and throughout the whole year I do doctors office/clinic/hospital reviews for an insurance company. Just enough to keep me busy but not running in circles.

Anyone done HEDIS with Outcomes Inc?
It depends on how you are paid. When I did HEDIS in CA, I was paid by the hour, when I recently did it on line, I was paid by the chart. If paid by the chart, it also depends on which measures you are doing...some can be 5 min., some 1/2 hour. It also depends on if/how much you get paid for travel time.

CA Nursing Board issues
If you already had a psych course, it may have to do with your score for that course when you took your boards. Different states sometimes have different "grade numbers" that they will accept, so, even though you passed the boards where you took them, maybe your score in psych wasn't quite high enough for CA. Perhaps your other classmates scored higher than you and thus no need for them to re-take the course to practice in CA. GOOD LUCK

Anyone doing HEDIS???
Hi cherish 62. I'm the one who started this thread way back when, so WELCOME. I found my first HEDIS job in So. CA by looking in the newspaper starting about Oct., or Nov. The first company found nurses for a So. CA insurance company. The 2nd year THAT insurance company decided to go internal and contacted those who did it the year before...after that they had a ready made base. If I were still in CA, I'd still be working for them. The company I'm working for now posted a request here on this thread and that's how I found them. The first year I went to Washington, DC for a week just before Christmas to help do kind of a pre-HEDIS survey. This year the same company has "scanners" who go to the doctor's offices to scan the material. It is then put on their secure server for experienced nurses to abstract from home, in their jammies and bunny slippers if they want...GREAT JOB!!! I've noticed LOTS of ads for HEDIS abstractors on the various job sites on the internet. GOOD LUCK PM me if you have any other ??'s

Anyone have experience with Medical Site Reviewers?
THANKS for the info Marlene. Yes, I did HEDIS chart reviews for 3 years when I lived in So. CA. I currently live out here in the middle of nowhere in West TX and no one has ever heard of HEDIS. The closest I'd have to go to do this again would be Dallas-Ft.Worth, about 4 1/2 hrs away. THANKS again.

Marlene1, What are CARA reviews? Thanks

Capd
Anyone working with CAPD? It has been years since I worked in dialysis (helped open and organize a dialysis unit in the mid 70's) and CAPD seemed to me to be the way to go. Just wondered if it is still used. THANKS

Please share advice on improving efficiency and organization
Maybe some day your office can order pizza and have a lunch time brainstorming meeting. Perhaps if you start calling the next patient when a person is out smoking, and then the next until you have an "opening" for the smoking pt., the word will get around and patients will wait until their appointment is done...post a notice to this effect in the waiting room. I would also post a notice that children are NOT to be left unattended (for their own safety) and that if this happens, the appointment will be rescheduled or they will be "worked in" when they come back into the office. A dirty office is totally not acceptable. If I were a patient I'd wonder what else in the office is dirty. Good Luck

Anyone done HEDIS with Outcomes Inc?
I think you should try to get to the "highest up" there, it's my bet that all you've talked to are the "flunkies". Their method is just too tedious and time consuming. Heck, when we sent stuff in for IRR we only sent info supporting our answer. I could see where they might have a "newbie" to HEDIS copy all this but anyone who has ANY experience (and certainly you, with 10 years experience) should only have to send in the supporting documentation. CathyRNCCS, do you have to copy as much as was indicated to alley67? What happens if you get a chart where the pt. hasn't done or wasn't given the proper follow-up...are you still paid for that chart since you reviewed it even if the results were negative. By the way alley67, :welcome:

UNIVAL quesion
Molina HealthCare is who I worked directly for in So. CA. Sure wish I could find HEDIS out here in west TX. I recently did some pre HEDIS work in Washington DC and that company (out of MO) was hoping to get a contract for HEDIS for my area, but they didn't:o

Doctor apologized
Years ago I worked in the office of a GI doc. He asked me to call his PA and get some info. When I reported to him what she said, he ranted and raved at me in front of other staff and some patients. At the end of the day I walked into his office and said something like, "I did just what you asked me to do and I'm sorry you didn't like what your PA did, we don't have to eat together here and we don't have to socialize here but we DO have to work together here. I can walk out that front door the same way I walked into it 2 years ago and I EXPEXT to be treated with respect when I'm here." I turned around and left for the day. Nothing more was ever said but a year later when I was leaving for another job, he stopped into my "going away dinner", bought me a gift and said something like, "Well, we may have not always seen eye to eye but you are one of the best nurses I've had." Not EXACTLY an appology and a little late but from him it was REMARKABLE.:flowersfo

UNIVAL quesion
Hi, I have worked for UNIVAL for almost 2 years now. I live out in the middle of nowhere in TX and even tho the pay is kinda low, it's as good as anything I can get here. Pay is determined by the kind of review you do, The easier site review is $32 PER SITE (generally takes about half an hour) and the longer component site review is paid at the rate of $24 per hour. I DO wish they paid ACTUAL miles (not -40miles) and actual time for travel. They seem to base travel time on 60 mi/hr and many times travel is within a city at the rate of about 35 mi/hr. But, as I said, considering where I live, the pay is better than nothing and the work really isn't hard. My last assignment was to 3 different cities in the same day and 300 miles travel...I made $240 for the day. It has gotten me out to some places I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise ... interesting. Work varies, sometimes a couple months without assignments and then 3 in the same week or day. But, that depends too on where you live... not much going on in West TX. I guess I was spoiled doing HEDIS for an insurance co. when I lived in So. CA...paid $30/hr for EVERYTHING, calling to set up the appointment, driving to the office, auditing the charts, getting the info redy to mail back to the company. Those were the good ole days but NOBODY is doing HEDIS in west TX ... only the bigger cities like Dalla/Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin, etc. Guess no one cares about heathcare or the lack there of in West TX:o

pharmaceutical companies?
Doobiedo, PLEASE PM me, too. Out here in the middle of nowhere in W. TX, jobs for RN's are few and far between and offer TERRIBLE pay. I'd appreciate ANY help for pharmacy/medical rep you could offer. THANKS

??~License by Endorsement
I graduated and took my original state boards in OH in 1967. I immediately moved to TX and had my license by endorsement here until 1970 when I moved back to OH and resumed working there. I moved to NC in the early 80's and got my license endorsed to there. I moved from NC in CA in 1998 and transferred my license to CA. I am now returning to TX. Can I submit the NCSBN Nursys form and pay the $30 for them to verify my OH, previous TX and NC registration? (these states are listed on their site) My license in these states is no longer active (only CA is active) but would NCSBN Nursys be able to verify that I WAS registered in these states for my application to TX? I guess I'm just not sure if NCSBN Nursys only verifies CURRENT licenses or also former licenses. I'd hate to sent $30 for nothing as this is going to be expensive enough as it is. My ORIGINAL renewal fee for TX was $2.00 HA! HA! How times have changed. HA! HA! Do I still have to contact each state BON to verify my previous license??? DANG!!! When I moved to CA from NC all I had to do was tell them where I HAD been licensed and have my license "transferred" from NC to CA (by endorsement). I didn't have to contact EACH state I was ever licensed in. What is with TX!?!?! THANK YOU in advance for any help you can give.
