Hey there. I haven't checked the list of books yet, I better get on that soon. I am probably going to order as many as possible online here this week. Fortunately, I don't have to take research. Thanks for the offer though. I was a psych major my 1st time around so my research courses transfer over. Pretty sweet! So far, my schedule looks pretty good. I am in the genesys section for clinicals and I guess that's a good thing because it's closer to home, but I hear Hurley is the better hospital. No big deal. Where are you purchasing your scrubs and lab coat? I went to one place already but they didn't have the right size.

Hey Rachele, Hopefully Mrs. Smith is the same Deb Smith that taught Pharm this summer. She was great.. I didn't buy the study guide for Pharm. Those study guides can be nice, but like you said, its hard to put a lot of time into them. I got along just fine with her course pack that had notes and the text. (I still have the text. If you want to save some $ you can use it) I feel you, I am gonna be a pretty broke guy these next two years. I have applied for financial aid, but it looks like I will be financing most of it. I submitted the health forms and was cleared to register today. I did not register yet tho. Does it seem like our courses are already sectioned out? I wonder if there is any flexibility with scheduling. Haha. My tetorifice was sore for a bit too. Are you going to the welcome ceremony on the 24th?

Thank You. Now I just have to figure out how to pay for it. Pharm is good. We had our first exam yesterday too. Our instructor is Deb Smith. She is down to earth, straight-forward, and good about getting the key points across while relating them to the "big picture". My only concern is that she seems to omit a good amt. of topics bc of the accelerated pace of the course (and for some reason she lets us out early every class, go figure). Brian

I received the "official" letter yesterday. I am in and pretty pumped about it. Thanks again for the info.

Thank you both! I will let you know when I hear. DB, Are we going to have dose calculations (from page nine in the notes) and creatinine clearance equations on the exam tomorrow?

Hey. Yeah, its Brian and I am in that same class. Congrats on getting in to the program. What have you done so far to prepare? Is there an orientation scheduled, did you complete the background check already...? I was told that I am probably going to be admitted into the program but the nursing dept. has not given me any additional info. So, anything that you could tell me about it so far would likely be news to me.

Hey Rachele, Micro went smoothly and I got an A! I have heard encouraging news from advisors and it looks like I should have a spot in the program. I find out for sure on May 31st. I am taking Pharmacology right now at UM Flint (NSC 233). It is a 7 week class so it is going to be tough but I like the professor, and I will be very glad to get it out of the way before the program begins. I am also taking Biochem at OCC ,which... sucks. Chemistry is not one of my favorites. I took Patho at MSU in several years ago, so I will probably need to brush up on it before fall. Are you taking any courses in the summer semester? Is there an orientation, or any other info. that I am missing out on bc of my situation? I feel like I send a lot of emails to the nursing dept. and the feedback has not been that great. Good luck with everything. B

Ok, I am a MALE, striving to become a nurse.
good point Cindy A. And thanks, I forgot to mention the male forum: https://allnurses.com/forums/f212/

Ok, I am a MALE, striving to become a nurse.
I can't give you a statistic for sure, but here is a good article about men in travel nursing (something I want to do) to check out: http://healthcaretraveler.modernmedicine.com/healthcaretraveler/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=415496 Where you work (city and specialty) seems to provide a more accurate representation of gender variability. For example, I work as a nurse extern. I see more male nurses in Emergency, and Critical care and than I see in other LTC specializations, surgery, or at nurse manager/practitioner role. I heard somewhere that there are more male nurses in hospitals and in larger urban areas than in rural settings. So while there are many more female RNs, female to male ratios will differ from setting to setting. I am not sure what you mean by "work anywhere in the medical field". You can get a job as a nurse aide or patient care assistant, but you'll be trained. If you have declared yourself as a pre-nursing student you could apply for an externship at a hospital. If you are interested in emergency or surgery you could see if local hospitals are hiring techs. Your best bet is to contact someone you know who works in a hospital, or the human resources department of an area hospital. Fill out an application and see what's available. Good luck, nice to have more males pursuing nursing careers.

I got my letter for the 2nd degree program. Consideration of my application has been deferred until the end of the current semester. They want to see my Microbiology grade and proof that I have enrolled in the CHM 252 equivalent. I wonder how many people are in this position. Its better than a "no" but I am not looking forward to waiting several more months to find out.

RamaMama, Sorry for the delay. I am at St. Joe's in Pontiac. It is a teaching hospital so they have a pretty good extern program. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get in as an extern I (basically a nurse aide). You would have no problem getting in once you have completed a Med/Surg. rotation in nursing school (At this status you become an Extern II). Other hospitals may be different. It always helps if you know a nurse at the hospital where you want to work. At the very least, you could go to the nearest hospital and inquire about an externship with human resources. Fill out an app. and they may hire you right away, or they may wait until you begin school. If you'd be willing to commute to Pontiac, PM me and I will see what kind of openings they have for externs. I have also applied to several out of state nursing schools. If I don't get accepted to UM Flint, or the other programs I have applied to, I might begin taking the courses for OU's accelerated track, apply to Physician's Assisstant programs, or begin an EMT-Paramedic program.

Yeah. I posted this a while ago so I am glad you responded. I took Pathophysiology. If I am accepted, i'll take Pharm in the summer at Flint, or where ever I can. I am a nurse extern and I really like my job. I work in the resource pool, so i've been fortunate enough to work in just about every area of the hospital. It is a tough but equally rewarding job. What was your first degree in, and what do you do now? My name is Brian, by the way.

I applied to the accelerated, but I also asked to be considered for the traditional. The acclerated is my 1st choice but I'd like to get in any way I can. Where have you been taking your prereqs.?

Anybody here applying for the traditional or 2nd degree program? If so, feel free to say "aye". Also, is all of the clinical time done at Hurley? And does anyone know how many students are applying for fall 2008? Letters go out in early March. Good luck to everyone!
