vein viewer
does anyones hospital use the new machine that illuminates the veins? Our hospital had an inservice on them the other day. It is very neat can see the veins good. We tried it on one of our babies. The nurse sticking said she could see where it would help, but it was going to take getting use to. She said it is a little distracting at first. Were only testing it out sooo. We have one were using for the whole hosptial now. Its a big machine that lets you see the veins. It works for adults as welll as kids. I wish we could use it on one of our really hard to stick babies and see how well it works.

Sugesstions on how to anchor UVC/UAC lines
We use opsites for our UAC/UVC we dont put our babies into isolettes until they pull the lines. They stay on warmers with lines. We dont use hum. in our isolettes either. Our opsites work well. Have never seen one come lose.

How often do you "care" for your nicu babies?
We do full assessments q 12 with vitals, head cir., girth everythingon all babies. On grower feeders we do vitals with feeds only.(unless something abnormal of course). On babies under 02 or on vent its vitals q 2 regardless of npo or if og feeding. Suction if needed etc. We just get vitals, disturb them as little as possible on our sick babies. Change diapers only when necessary.

I have been in the NICu for almost a year. I posted last year after I had been in it for a couple months and said I would never get it. I was sooo depressed and stressed. But, after a year I feel so much better about it. Dont get me wrong I still have questions and tons to learn, but now I dont go home crying from stress. Thanks for all your support. I love NICU and I love this website. :icon_hug:

soooo frustrated
Help! I have been so depressed lately. I have been working in the NICU/nursery for about two months. I feel so overwhelmed. Yesturday I just broke down and cried at work in front of everybody. I feel so incomptent (sp?) I feel like I am never going to catch on. I had my first ventilator patient yesturday and my csection delivery baby went bad and had to be admitted to NICU and put on vent. I feel like I bug the crap out of my prec. But everyone is sooo nice and patient with me. I could not ask for a better place to work as far as the people. I dont know if I should consider another area or what. I love love love working in there but I just dont know if I will ever learn. Oh well thanks for listening

needle stick
: Hi. I have been a nurse since 1999 today is the first day it has ever happened to me. I was putting the needle in the sharps and I looked down and I had a prick mark where the needle had stuck me. I do not know if it happened when I took the needle cap off to give the immunization or after. I was honest and told the monm(it was a 4 year old getting thier school shots). She was very understanding and forgiving. She herself is a nurse so she knows accidents happen. I felt so bad. especially since I do not know when the needle stick happened. I am not really worring about catching anything because I know the parents and it was just a child, I feel worse that I dont know if it happened before or after I gave the immunizations. I just had a baby so I was test for HIV, and all that stuff. Everything was negative but you still worry. I cried and cried. The mom called me three times at work to make sure I was ok. I am so glad it happened to a understanding family. Please write and let me know if anything like this has happened to you. Does anyone know the chances of catching anything from needle sticks? Thanks in advance for your help.
