Furosemide
What lab values should you beware of prior to some starting on Furosemide for the first time? What are the most important things to know about your patient prior to Lasix use?

Help with Interview
I was just reading your post and know that now it has been months since you had your interview, but wanted to respond because I have an interview for a Hospice position at a major hospital here and it is for case management mainly in homecare. If you remember any questions you were asked or have some insight now on the question you posted- I would so love to hear your thoughts?

Heparin drips
Thank you I appreciate that response. We also do this at our hospital. Are there any medical conditions that I should be particularly aware of when monitoring pt.'s on heparin drips? Besides the obvious of pt.'s being out of PTT range what other reasons would cause one to turn off the drip? Of course we are monitoring for bleeding.....

Looking for nursing scholarships?
Greeting, I have just been excepted into a Bachelor nursing program in Portland, Oregon as a Junior and will be starting in two weeks. I am starting to put together a packet of scholarship information. I have some scholarships I will apply to, but would like more. Does anyone out there have scholarhips they recommend, or internet sites that they have had success with in terms of scholarship searches. Looking to expand my knowledge and help pay for a program that cost 18,000 a year with no grant money because I already have a B.A.

opening up nursing the profession to spanish speakers?
I just posted a thread called, " Is there cultural diversity in the nursing profession?" and on a similar topic I would like to put out another question. I am a C.N.A. and have noticed that maybe as much as 50% of my co-workers are Hispanic, yet I personally have not seen the among nurses. I have two women friends from Guatemala who are very good C.N.A.'s, but desperately want to go into nursing. They both feel it is impossible due to their language skills. Yet, both these women are able to communicate just fine, though would probably run into trouble with some of the medical terminology. There is an ever growing demand for spanish speaking nurses. It seems logical to me that the nursing profession would want to recruit hispanics to fill this need. How can the profession become more accessible to Hispanic people? Is it essentail that english skills be perfect and how could nursing programs adapt to help with the language barrier? are there any other important pieces to these problem that I have not considered?

Jamistlc- you took herbology and homepathy. have you been able to apply these at work? Please know that I fully support alternative medicine I am just curious to know how much freedom nurses have to really use it.

Indian Health Services
Hello there sugarcrystal, I am sorry I don't have any information for you, instead I have questions. I am working as a C.N.A. doing hospice care and looking into how to afford nursing school as well as what my interests in nursing are. Today I visited a government health clinic to get a feel for community health nursing. I am interested in health education, natural therapy, cultural diversity issues. I am not sure what the US COmmissioned Corps is, but I am curious to hear about your experience working for the Indian Health Services. How did you get the job? what does it entail? One of my friends was telling me that one way to pay for college is to do a contract where you agree to do rural health care, work on a reservation or in a community health clinic for a given amount of time in exchange for tuition funds. Are you in a similar program. If you feel inclined I would love to hear about it. You can also just e-mail me directly. [email protected] Good luck!

are doctors more valued then nurses?
Why are nurses under paid? Why do doctors earn so much more then nurses? I understand that doctors have more education behind them and of course they should recieve better wages then nurses because they have to carry more responsibility. Yet, nurses work just as hard as doctors, if not harder. Shouldn't their wages be a little more balanced?

cultural diversity
Thank you everyone for your wonderful responces! MollyJ brought up a good point when she said, "awareness does not necessarily equate to culturally sensitive care. It's not that easy." Someone esle suggested asking if there were any special cultural considerations they would like taken. Yes, the gap between one culture to the next may be large, but I think geniune caring towards the patient in most cases can help bring the attention off any cultural no-no's you might make on accident. PTnurse- I highly recommend you pursue the spanish class idea! I just got back from Guatemala where I took some excellent courses. I know going to another country can be intimating, but it is not near as scary as you might imagine. I would be glad to tell you more about it if you are interested. One of the reasons I asked this question is because I am thinking that I might want to go into public health nursing and work at a community health clinic. It seems that diversity among patients would be a daily occurance.

cultural diversity
I would like to open up the discussion of cultural diversity. Is the U.S. health care system adapting to the growing numbers of ethnic groups in our country? For those of you in medical/nursing school is cultural awareness/sensitivity/knowledge a subject that has been adequately addressed? why or why not? For those in practice what sort of diversity are you seeing in your patients? What is the primary ethnic/minority group that you deal with? If you have a nurse for long time have you seen a noticeable increase in the diversity of patients coming in? Does your work environment provide a safe (non-bias) and accessible (language intreperters, material in other languages...ect.) place for people of all ethnic backgrounds? Does your work offer training/education to enhance cultural awareness in its employees?
