How to be a nurse when the pt's family is around.
I've been working for 3 weeks now and i dread it when i have admissions with family members who hang around. I can work better when I'm one on one with the pt. When the entire room is filled with family, i feel so claustrophobic and appear like an incompetent nurse. Is this a normal feeling? I'm not very talkative and loudspoken and i sometimes want to kick myself in the foot. Does this feeling go away with time and experience?

Orienting with a preceptor and totally nervous to be on my own
I'm on the same boat as you too. I'm a new RN who started working for about 3 weeks now. My preceptor is great and i feel so secure with her shadowing me. When she's in charge, i have to work so-lo and i feel so insecure and behind. Eventually, we have to learn to function independently. I'm getting there, but i never hesitate to ask questions.

burning at iv site when flushed with ns/hep.
My pt has a hep-locked peripheral iv and when we flush her line with either ns or heparin, she complained of burning at the site. There's no s/s of infiltration or phlebitis at the site. But there is some old blood that remained inside the tubing. I'm curious as to what is causing the problem. Thanks.

Piggyback IV question
What are the chances of the vanco still remaining in the primary line if you dont change the primary tubing, but only change the secondary for the new antbx?
-
Piggyback IV question
Say a primary line is running potassium chloride and you piggyback it with vanco, after the vanco is done, another piggyback of cipro needs to go up. My question is, do you change the secondary tubing to avoid cipro and vanco incompatibility? Thanks.

Nclex meltdown!!!
My RN-test stopped at 75 Q! I think i had about 10+ select all that apply and 10+ meds. These questions kept alternating in between the other multiple choice questions. I had no med calc; 1 ekg. I felt like my entire exam was entirely based on these 2 types of questions. What does this mean? Am i not competent enough so they keep giving me those questions OR are the questions considered to be the higher type? HELP!!!! Reading other people's posts is driving me crazy because i think i might FAIL. I had a hunch that the comp might shut down at 75 and it did. Makes me feel very discouraged. Anyone out there has the same format and passed?

feeling a lilttle bit jittery and anxious...
I'm scheduled for Aug 4th. Every time i want to take a break and visit this site, i would start sweating and getting nervous. I felt good for the people who passed, and those that didn't have the luck, it made me feel down. Then i wonder to myself, what if i'm one of the unlucky ones? The thought of it puts me in a panic attack and i guess in a way it encouraged me to study more. Maybe it's best that i should temporarily stop visiting this website, but it's so addicting and i just cant seem to turn away from it. Am i the only person who's feeling like this? I'm studying saunders and the cd and has anyone had any luck just from the saunders book?

Via what contact method for a job?
This might be a silly question, but i'm really curious. I just want to know from other ppl about what method was used to contact you about a job offer, i.e. phone, email, letter... Also, if you were contacted via phone, do they usually go through information pertaining to salary and benefits, or do they send you materials after you accepted? or both?

forgot to flush iv
A nurse was actually with me while i was doing this. At the time, the patient had a lot of visitors, which i think contributed to me forgetting to flush. The Rn probably got distracted too that she didn't remind me or maybe she remembered but didn't remind me because she didn't want to embarass me in front of the patient/family? (Which i dont care because i'd rather they tell me that i'm doing something wrong and i wouldn't be embarrassed at all).

Salary negotiating
I also want to add additional info to my first post. thanks for all the responses, they have been extremely helpful. My starting salary is $21/hr and i'm from upstate new york. Dont know if anyone's familiar with the area, but the cost of living is affordable. A hospital 4 hours away from where this job offer is pays around the same. Also, if i do decide to negotiate with them, and they turn down my offer. Would it make me look bad if i still want to work for them? i lack experience in negotiating.

Salary negotiating
I'm a new grad with a BSN. I got a job offer and my starting salary is 21/hr not including weekends differential. I really like this job, but i dont think the salary is adequate. Do you think it's a good idea to negotiate my salary and what advice would you give? The job description stated $40,000-50,000 based on experience. I have clinical experience in nursing school, and that's all. Do they usually pay new grads in the low end? How willing are they to increase your salary? It's a union job, so do all new grads get paid the same?
