  1. Hey Sarah, How long was it after the deadline that you got your letter? I know they said 8 weeks --- but that seems like a long time!!!
  2. I bought the arco version of the review..... it sort of helped me. It gives you an idea of how the questions will be formatted but you can also get examples from the fccj website for the NAT. There is a link on their page for the NAT sample questions. I didn't spend a huge amount of time studying for it. IMHO, you either know the material or you don't. The study guide doesn't have the same questions that will appear on the test so studying those will only get you a good score on the study test. My advice: Take your time and read everything carefully, its not hard but the "timed" aspect can make you rush thru it and make some dumb mistakes.
  3. ........submitted today. They said that i'll get word 8 weeks after June 1st. I've calculated my points total and I'm sitting at 218.84. I'm pretty confident about gettin in with that total just by what I've heard from others. My only concern is that I want to do the nite/wknd thing and there are only 24 spots for that program. I just talked to another guy who submitted his app at the same time and he said something about there being some sort of preference for males vs. females. I don't know how true that may be but on the app is a spot for gender declaration. Why would they ask if it didn't matter? Do any of ya'll know anything about males having some sort of quota and/or preference in the application process? I know they won't admit someone who isn't qualifed but lets just say that its a dead tie for the last spot - will they give it to a guy based solely on the aspect of gender minority? I know its a touchy subject when it comes to discrimination, so any thoughts or experiences out there? I just have to find some way to stay occupied in the meantime before my letter comes in the mail. (oh yeah, I guess I could get back to work at my crappy job - but what fun is that?!?!?!
  4. Just going by what the advisors said - you can submit an application with as little as 120 pts ......... not much of chance of getting in, but they will consider it if all requirements are met. The 180 - 185 has been past cutoff points. It is my understanding that they rank you by your points.... so theoretically if there are 36 spots and 177 pts is the 36th best score then they will let you in the program as long as all pre-req and other requirements are met. Just trying to put some hope out there for ya, 12breakfree!!!!!
  5. Don't give up:nono:........ how far off are you from 180? You never know what the applicant pool is gonna be so it is always worth at least submitting. The 180 pts thing is just an average on the lowest that got accepted for the previous semester. I'm sure they have had some lower than 180 get in. Did you use the study guide for the NAT?
  6. Yeah, I was lucky enough to be able to get into micro. When I tried to register at SJRCC for A&P I - the classes were full immediately. They let me take micro before A&P because I had already taken chemistry and biology when I had gotten my bachelor's at UNF. That was one thing that I didn't like about SJRCC - they had like two sections for A&P and that seems to be the most popular class. They wouldn't move my registration priority up - they treated me like I was straight out of high school with zero credits even with 130 credit hours from my business degree. I got basically one of the last days to register. I was lucky to get what I got. That is the reason I moved on to FCCJ. More options and more classes to choose from.
  7. That's the book that I used - it wasnt' all that helpful but it does give you an idea of what to expect. I'm gonna apply for the nite/wknd program for the fall - i guess that it is mainly at deerwood campus. Thats good for me cuz I live a lot closer to there than the north campus. I'm just waitn for my AP II to be done. I took my courses kind of backwardz - micro first then my a&P's. I could've already applied if i had done it the other way.
  8. Yo MikeinFl, I will definitely be hittin ya up for some insight. I'm gettin ready to apply for the fall Nite/weekend program as soon as I finish my A&P II. Are there many guys in your program? Have you encountered any issues being a guy (I assume you're a dude!! "MikeinFL") in any of your classes / clinicals? I'm pretty nervous but anxious at the same time. Now, are your classrooms at Deerwood or N.side? I heard that the n/w program is all at Deerwood - is that rite? That would be helpful to me - i live in jax bch. Anyways, good luck with everything - i'll try not to bug ya too much with pesky questions;). - sbc8201
  9. I scored a total of 181 (71-35-75). I guess that it was a decent score - I did buy a study guide from FCCJ book store (Nursing Entrance Test Review.....I think it was called it cost about $20 and was yellow in color). I did most of the practice tests but I really can't say if it specifically helped me or not. You can get a good idea of the "style" of the questions, but the content is something that you either know or not. The math section was mainly word problems but there was definitely both types. I'm pretty good at math stuff so that was probably the easiest part for me. I had more trouble with the reading comp - just cuz it is timed and there are some kind of tricky questions if you try to just scan the passages - real easy to get it wrong by not reading the whole thing. As far as the time thing goes - I was finished with the whole thing in about two hours. There were people there that were there before I started and were still sitting there when I left. My advice - get the study guide but don't stress over doing everysingle problem/question in it; take your time and read everything; USE your scratch paper in the math section ( I saw some girl who finished turn in a blank paper!!!!!!! ); and just relax and let it come to you. Good luck!!!!!!!!!
  10. yup - i only get credit for a "c" for my AP classes. Even with that I will have about 212 pts. That should be enough for the nite / weekend program. It's really a shame that the university system penalizes students who strive hard in high school with AP classes.
  11. I took a bunch of my pre-reqs at sjrcc, but I am opting to go to fccj for the program. I got a bunch of run-around from sjrcc and they weren't going to accept my highschool AP classes for credit. It saved me a bunch of time and $$$$$ for fccj accepting my AP scores. It still kind of sux b/c fccj only gives passing credit for AP scores (point value is worth a "C"), but it is better than receiving no credit and having to take the class again. I know for me that fccj seems to give the students more exposure to different facilities and has alliances with the major hospitals and rehab facilities in town. You would think with such a shortage, it wouldn't be so hard - but as the old saying goes, "Anything worthwhile..................
  12. Finally found some fellow FCCJ'ers. I'm applying for the fall program. I'll have all of my pre-reqs done in may and will barely meet the june 1 deadline for applying. The way I've figured my points I should have around 200 (assuming I stay on track and get an A in A&P2). My question for ya'll is - what was the time frame from when you submitted your application to hearing that you got in? I'm gonna do the nites/wkend thing so I guess it is a bit tighter competition to get in. Did any of yall apply to both (nite AND day track)? That is what the counselor told me to do to increase my chances but I think my points total should be high enough to get in to nites/weekends. Anyways - sorry about the rambling on - it would just be nice to hear some feedback from some people who have gone thru with the program. It seems like it is hard to get any information from the FCCJ people on what to expect. Thanks.
  13. I'm starting nursing school in the fall and I have never worked in a hospital before. I've looked into some part-time positions to get a feel for it but someone suggested volunteer programs which would offer more flexibility..... I'm still working full time in my current position (Building Material Sales - which sucks) so that I can try to save up as much money as possible before I start classes. Luckily for me - I live within walking distance to a hospital so volunteering on the weekends or nights would be feasible. Just curious as to any of you guys having done this before or not? I don't think it would be a waste of time either way but I don't want to be working in the gift shop!!!!
  14. FIXED - "I'm definitely not going into nursing SOLELY for the money". Of course I expect to be compensated. I'm a nice guy - just not THAT NICE!!!!!
  15. I'm wondering if having another degree besides RN can translate into more money. I'm definitely not going into this job for the money, but of course I am just curious as to how compensation works. I'm starting nursing school this fall, I already have a bachelor's in business administration. I've been doing sales type jobs since I graduated six years ago and just decided to make a change. Does anybody have any experience with this?
