Need help writng an OB Resume
Recombining is a good idea, that will give me more space. I don't want to use up more than a page since my nursing experience spans less than tree years so it will be comical to spread it out over two pages. Any advice on including GPA? Should I state the date a certification expires or it will suffice to say current BLS etc.? Thank you for your help. K

New OB Nurses, Grads and Students, Please Feel Free to post your questions here:
Hello. I am working on a resume and have some questions. I am a member of AWHONN but all is really means is I played the fee, I am not on the board nor do I hold an office, I just receive their publication. Is AWHONN membership still a good thing to mention on the resume? Also, right now most of my job descriptions are plain: triage patients, assess patients, administer meds etc. I came across some samples that state things like: coordinate patient care through a continuum and facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness. If I use the latter I will have a three page resume. What are some thoughts about simple vs. flowery? Thanks. K.

Please, some info on unions, hospital affiliations, and legislation protecting nurses
I see. It's similar to NYC then; one big union that most nurses belong to and some smaller unions that have contracts with individual institutions. I heard some not so great stuff about Kaiser; that they dominate and subjugate other institutions to their rules. But that was only one person that told me that so I don't know. Thanks, K

Need help writng an OB Resume
Hello all. I am currently working on my first OB resume. I work on a L&D unit and want to find a job in the same. Can anyone give me guidance as how to best write the resume. My biggest problem is I can't seem to fit on one page at size 12 font, it's at size 11 now. I don't have that much experience but between the L&D duties and my former Med-Surge duties and the NRP/ACLS/BLS certs, license number and my AWHONN membership that I put under Affiliations I feel like I really skimmed on the job description duties. My exact bullets are as follows: Triage gravidous clients Admit, assess and provide care for clients in labor, for induction, cesarean section, and antipartum monitoring; including high risk obstetrical populations Perform Electronic Fetal Monitoring and charting via TraceVue Administer medications and document via QuadraMed Function as Circulating nurse in operating room Function as PACU nurse in recovery room Function as team leader when caring for critical clients Perform urethral catheterization, IV insertion, and blood transfusion We have an L&D triage where we see patients but I'm not sure "triage gravidous clients" is understandable. Also I did not mention that I float to post partum nor all those other nursing duties like teaching, collaborating with team members and safety. I would appreciate some help please, thank you. Katya

"Hiring freezes"? Wow, that sounds bad. What happened to that much talked about shortage? I am not about to just move without lining something up but it will be difficult getting hired from NY, one place already told me that they would sooner consider someone already in CA rather than take a chance on me. Too bad 'cause I am in a rush to get out of here. Be well, Katya

Please, some info on unions, hospital affiliations, and legislation protecting nurses
Hello. I was hoping to get some help with figuring out union organization and hospital affiliations. I am moving from New York city, here it's mostly NYSNA. Is the California Nurses Association the only union representing California nurses? Are all employed nurses in the union or are there non-union positions? Does the union work hard for the members? I understand that California has legislation protecting sanctioned nurse-patient ratios, is this upheld strongly? Is there other legislation protecting nurses such as nursing as a physically taxing profession or attack on RN viewed as a felony? In New York city there are various corporations managing hospital chains. What are those corporations in California, namely Santa Cruz area? Is Kaiser Permanente an insurance company or do they also manage hospitals? Any information on obstetrical nursing in California would also be appreciated. Thank you very much. Katya

Mandatory Flu vaccine
The h1n1 vaccine was never tested on humans. The FDA approved it because of political pressure that is why they are being sued. The only mandatory vaccines for NYS are MMR. Most people have received these in infancy and are done with vaccines. Healthcare personnel should not be forced but should be given the choice. It is a medical intevention and therefore requires voluntary consent. We should not get fired for refusing as patients dont get thrown out of the hospital for refusing medications. Some people do not believe in vaccines and that is their right. If you subscribe to alternative medicine or conventional medicine your views will differ. There are valid arguments on both sides so it's really a matter of what you believe. I do not believe in vaccines. I believe in my immune system. I have been exposed to influenza though my patients but have never developed symptoms. CDC states that if you are healthy, and a young adult and the vaccine has been matched properly to the virulant stain of flu for the season you are protected 70% to 90%. I have been protected 100% by my immunes system alone, without the flu vaccine, in the 4 years I've been a nurse. CDC states that if you're over 50y/o and have at least one chronic condition your protection after vaccination is 48%. That's because the vaccine only stimulates the humoral immune system, which makes antibodies, so this population makes the antibodies after immunization but they dont impart immunity. This is because the cell-mediated branch, which mounts an acute responce and destroys forein antigens, is weakened from age and chronic conditions in this population.

Max pressure on an intubation cuff
TazziRN and RN-Cardiac. Thank you both for responding. It is important to know that the volume is 10mL, I actually did not know that. However I did stumble upon the question about pressure in one of the tests I was taking for an agency a month ago, the options were offered in mmHg and I did find minimal info online but I do not trust sources I do not know, anyone can put up a web page claiming anything they like.

Max pressure on an intubation cuff
Hello all. I could not find in neither my med-surg nor my fundamentals book the maximum pressure of a cuff on an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube. Also I saw some readings on the net in mmHg and mmH2o and was wondering how they compare. Please let me know what the appropriate pressure is and if possible please cite your sources. Thanks a bunch.
