  1. I have always been a night person. (I remember staying up to watch Johnny Carson every night when I was four.) I love working nights, and hope to go back to them some day. As far as your own personality, I think you have to know whether you are a day person or a night person. As far as work, I think a lot depends on your workplace and/or your department. When I worked in a nursing home, it was wonderful to go to nights because I no longer had to deal with dietary, housekeeping, OT, PT, and arranging transportation for doctor's appointments. That really got to be a pain and nights were soooo much quieter. When I worked nights in a NICU, one of the perks to me was not having parents around as much as they were during the day. I also enjoyed the camaraderie with my co-workers. Also, contrary to a previous post, we did have unit clerks, and dietary opened the cafeteria for us from 1-3. It all depends on where you work.
  2. I agree with everything JEMB has said, except the fact that I was never the first to float. If I was on the schedule, I was on the same float list as the rest of my unit. If I was called in that day, I was told specifically which unit I was being called in to work, and I could always say no. Other than that, things were the same for me as they were for JEMB. My pay was about $4.00/hr. higher than my part-time hourly wage.
  3. My son's elementary school PE teacher was Mr. Fuchs...he went by "Coach" to avoid potential problems. The only interesting physician's name I know of is "Dr. Costleigh."
  4. Nurse Ratched, This was a great quote and worth repeating... Any boss who puts a few dollars for gloves ahead of my health should quickly decide whether or not they want to use a barrier when they kiss my orifice... I am with most of you...I probably don't wear them as often as I should, but I definitely wear them for IV starts, drawing blood, etc...
  5. I have to take a urine drug test for a prospective employer. I guess I am a little ignorant of all that they test for, and my concern is this... My back has been hurting for about a week, and I have tried several meds, the strongest of which have been Darvocet and Tylenol 3. Does anyone know specifically what drugs they test for and if these drugs will show up? For how long do they have to be out of my system? If I haven't taken them for 2-3 days, would traces of them still show up? Any answers would be appreciated. Also...I don't want to let on that I have occasional back problems, so making any excuses to my prospective employer about being on these meds is out of the question.

  7. Does your company pay for CPR certification? Mine doesn't! I just went through orientation for a new job and was given a list of CPR cert/recert dates. The cost to all employees is $20. I kept my mouth shut. Fortunately, I am not due to recert until the spring. At that point, I will probably have to say something about it, because I don't think it's right. What do you all think?
