Nursing; Single Mother; are all nursing jobs 12 hr shifts?
Hey there! I am thinking about nursing and have been for quite awhile. The thing is I have been discouraging on it because, quite frankly, I can't do the 12 hr. shifts plus drive time. I am a single mother with a three year old at home. Background; I don't have any help from family and no help from my sons father. We live on our own. I will graduate this year with my associates in arts:yeah:(finally I have been going since '05). I have been thinking about nursing for so long, but everytime I look on monster and jobsearch engines I see 12 hr shifts. For me, thats not realistic; my son is in preschool, being gone 13-14 hrs a day is not doable, and even if it where it would just be too hard on him; I am his only parent how would that be good for him or me for that matter? Is there options and jobs out there for nurses just starting out with good hours? I am working full-time, and would probably have to take out a pretty huge loan to cover everything if I went back to school full-time during the day. Is it worth it? I don't want to get out into the field, spending alot of money, time, effort, ect. getting through college and find out there is nothing for me. Help!! Day hrs, good 8-9 hr jobs availabe in nursing?

What is with me?? Do I give up?
Please, please, don't give up! Just keep repeating..."this too shall pass, this too shall pass". I too have taken three years to do the pre-reqs., I started in 2005! Geesh, 2005! My son was a not even a year yet, and now he almost three...don't even get me started on the mommy guilt : (. With work, kids, and our daily lives, the "average" year/year and a half for pre-reqs is just unrealistic! It is not just you...this is very common with the nursing student...this too shall pass..this too shall pass. Just think, how great is it going to be when your kiddos see you walk the stage...thinking to themselves..yeah that's my mom! I am a single mother of my son. When he goes to bed that is my time to study, and get things done. We may have to do a couple all nighters, us Rn students...but we can do it! And I don't think you need anxiety medicine, its normal to be anxious while doing the stuff your getting done, and all that your going through. Its perfectly normal to be anxious..just make sure you make some you time in your schedule. I know thats hard...but it will make you feel better, and it may help you concentrate. Try after the kiddos go to sleep, for about 20 minutes or so, just relax, enjoy the quiet, read a book(not a&p lol), or anything that you like that relaxes you. It may seem just like twenty minutes, but it may surprize you and give ya' a much needed energy boost! You can do it! Hope I helped!

College & Motherhood
Hi! When I saw this, I just had to write. Many times I feel the same way. Too overwhelmed with work, school and having a baby, to concentrate on school. My first semester I took a 13 hrs. my son was a then 6 months. I dropped some of those courses, and since I have been taking one or two each term. I finished last semester with my AS in Arts(my son is almost 3 yrs now), and I hope I will get into nursing school soon, but if not I know that I will try try again, and keep taking classes. It may only be one or two at a time, but at least your trying right? Don't beat yourself up about this first semester, it is really hard to do the online classes when you have a little one at home. I've done all ITV, Internet, and classroom classes, and I have to say that for the harder subjects especially math..people usually need to be in the classroom to understand the material. And sometimes its easier as a mom to have a mapped out time to set for classes each week. Don't beat yourself up too much mama! You tried your best!
