Are "donuts" (invalid cushions) safe ?
The institution where I currently work uses "donuts" for new moms with sore bottoms . My previous institution "outlawed" them about 15 years ago. A wound care conference I attended said the cushions decrease blood flow to the perineum and pull on the repaired perineum and hemmorhoids. What do you do at your hospital ?

OR Bound??
I just want to add that I feel OR nurses are a special dedicated group, I admire what they do . There is so much to learn and know about each system of the body's surgeries. It just wasn't my "cup of tea". That's what so great about being a nurse-so many choices in career path. Good luck

side effects of lanolin??
I remember that late 1980's or early 1990's we stopped using lanolin for sore nipples...something about pesticides in the Lanolin from sheep grazing on pesticide laden meadows, my facility switched to Lansinoh.......

canker sores
I have suffered with canker sores since I was a child, usually after biting the inside of my cheek, scraping with a toothbrush or dental tool, or biting my lip while I was having surgery. KENALOG IN ORABASE is a MIRACLE !! My brother who is a physician recommended it to me and I have been using it for 20 years . After my hysterectomy last year, I had a sore on my inner lip where I bit it while I was sedated. I asked my GYN to order it for me . She hadn't heard about it. I put in on the sore at bedtime and by the morning it's starting to heal !

OR Bound??
Hi, I was on orientation for 5 weeks in the OR when I realized it wasn't for me ,I really missed the patient contact. I found that in the OR your most important skills are positioning the patient, specimens and humoring the surgeons !!

Getting an epidural (with fentayl) may hinder breastfeeding (new study)
This is my observation and PERSONAL OPINION from 28 years as an OB nurse: epidurals with Fentanyl do cause problems with breastfeeding. Back in ancient times (late 70's,80's, early 90's), the institution that I worked at didn't use epidural anesthesia, or rarely used epidurals. Most babies went to the breast with minimal assistance from staff, very rarely did a mom need to use a breast pump. From mid-late 90's to the present most facilities that I have worked at use epidurals for most laboring women (at teaching hospitals the residents really push the epidural even if the mom wasn't planning one). Since this increase in epidurals so many babies seem to have problems with nursing. Now the moms need so much intervention from staff, so many pump and then bottle feed the breast milk. I did notice that when I worked in Hawaii for a few monthes in 2003 that very few women in the two hospitals that I worked at had epidurals and the breastfeeding came naturally and went well. Just wishing we could get back to a simpler time in childbirth !!

Why so many interventions ??????
Hi, I just recently returned to L&D (26 yrs experience), and now I remember why I left !!! Too many inductions, too much interference, too many interventions !! Doesn't anyone have a baby anymore without Cytotec, an IV, Pit, Epidural,C/Section ???? I remember when women could walk around the unit, we checked heart tones q 15-30 minutes, they didn't have to have an IV, they could drink clear liquids !! Is there anyone else out there who is fed up with the way labor is "managed" ?????
