I work in the Intensive Care Unit and am part of the Hospital's code team.

I think mainly being responsible for the compressions. Just anxiety Im sure will be relieved once I go thru the first arrest.

Hey guys, Well here I am. As of 2 days ago I was hired in the ICU of new hospital. Part of the work involve is being part of the Code Team and my job is to do the compressions while the rest of the work is being done by the staff. I'm very happy with the new position as there is so many new things involved but this new position also comes with some anxiety and worries. Have any of you been in the same or similar position? do you have any advice on does and donts?? Thank you

Ah! well I got an interview for one my dream careers and I am so worried! I have been asked to go for an interview tomorrow to work as a nursing attendant in the ICU of one of the hospitals. I have never applied for a hospital position as I have only worked in the pre-hospital setting as an EMT. What are some things I should expect during the interview, what are some things i can say to really impress them? all advice and help greatly appreciated, im a bit worried.

Hello all, Not sure if you remember me. I was shortly around a few months ago before having some major surgery and just able to come back now. I worked as an EMT here in Canada for 3 years when I was forced to stop to get a chronic hip injury fixed. I have been looking at working as an LPN for quite some time. Had the great opportunity and blessing to do a shadow with a senior LPN here locally at the children's hospital. What a great blessing that was. Received great information and help from a truely amazing nurse. If it werent for him, I really don't know that I would have been able to keep my chin up all this time while recovering from surgery. I am wanting to apply for my LPN as soon as I am able to walk, so probably wont apply until the end of next year. Having said that I have been researching online and trying to find material I can review on my own to be familiar with information I will be learning in school. Having the background I have, I have a lot of A and P as well as pharmacology as I took multiple paramedic courses, along with the EMT material you need to know. I found and read inside out some material I found on our provincial LNP web page. They were online review modules.I am aware that it from state to state or province to province there will be different information but is there a site where I can find modules? even general information that I can review online? Well now my question is what is the difference between a scrub nurse and being an OR tech?

Hi there, I ran into one of my partners this weekend who used to work as an LPN a few months ago. I was informed that yes as an LPN I can work in the OR which seems to be in high demand here. I would have to take a 6 months course online once finished my LPN. Once that is done I can work as a scrub nurse, work directly with the docs in the OR. Very exciting news.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I just sent an email to CLPNA and asked for some guidance as well. I will call one of the hospitals tomorrow morning here in Calgary and see what amount of help I can get that way. Thanks again!

Sorry I must have not understood what Fiona posted. From the looks of it I won't be able to do a shadow but might be able to talk to an ORTech? I hadnt thought of calling CLPNA but will do that as well.

The thing is I am not yet a nursing student yet alone even sent my application for the fall (but sending my application tomorrow). Does that change things?

Hi there, I am more than certain that I want to go thru schooling and do my LPN. Once I go thru the 16 months/2 yrs of schooling take the long distance O.R. course. No here is my issue. I have "been" in the O.R. on multiple occasions (as a patient mind you) but wanted to know how I could attempt to arrange a job shadow in an OR when you don't actually yet know of any nurses? I am located in Calgary, AB. I've been so blessed so far with this wonderful site. Some truely great people come on here and provide information. I would really appreciate some ideas as to how I can go about this. Thanks again

I want to thank you guys again. Now that I know I can go ahead and get this training into the OR once I successfully start and finish my LPN. Just thank you so much because right now thats what I need to hear. After having to let go my "life dream" career of continuing working on the ambulance and the ortho issues I have had will prevent that but hearring what you guys found out and helping me find the right information has been more than wonderful. truely a blessing on my end. Thank you ewattsjt. Thats what I think I am just starting to understand. Been looking this evening for information but the only that keeps coming up is RN's doing the ones who do the OR work which is interesting.

I was wondering if anyone knows if here in Canada we have OR techs? I havent been able to find any Canadian sites with OR tech descriptions. Does anyone know? Thank you!

Being from Canada I don't know that we actually have them here but I will keep looking and maybe post a thread about it. Thank you guys :)

Its true. I am there myself right now (at the age of 21 yes). Had a serious hip operation about 2 months ago. I will say it is very difficult to stay still and do as the doctor says but yes you can do to much. It is very easy to damage what has just been repaired by doing even just a little more than the doc has allowed you to do. It really doesnt take much. Cheers

I am unsure what the nursing regulations are but I'm sure they are similar if not the same as the ones in EMS. You are not allowed to work while you are on narcotics. You will be considered to be under the influence and putting yourself as well as others at danger. Not that I agree with this as I have my own health issues that can be taken care of by narcs but I also see where they are coming from. Where can you draw the line??

DO NOT GIVE UP. Let me tell you this. I am now 21 yo, had a bad wrist/upper arm fracture 8 years ago. Lived in chronic pain for about 4 years after seeing my GP multiple times. Went to a different doc who finally said enough is enough and sent me to a plastic surgeon, had surgery but still had pain afterwards. He said there was nothing else he could do for me and sent me to an orthopedic surgeon who tried 2 seperate procedures. Still had a lot of pain even then! He then sent me to another surgeon who ended up partially fusing my wrist BUT after trying and trying I finally got the right treatment for me. All this happend for 6 years! I had given up on becoming a paramedic, I had given up on horseback riding, I had given up on everything. Once I finally recovered from the fused wrist I started to have a wicked set of plans for my future but then came along a hip problem. Same story again, had to get tests done but came accross some wonderful doctors and surgeon. Had surgery 2 months ago but not feeling much better. I have finally given up on paramedicine. I am a registered EMT tho. BUT I refuse to give up now! I did it, you can do it! It will take the next 2 or so years of more surgeries on my hips before I think im going to be able to go back to school (thats where the nursing comes in) because I can no longer do EMS, but I have not given up. TRUST ME, where there is a will, there is a way. GO for it! You are welcome to pm me if you need a chit chat :)

You guys are fabulous! thank you so much. I looked up this morning what a scrub tech is and I believe the closest thing to that here is a "Sterile Processing Technician"? I looked it up on the SAIT web page. Will keep looking. Thank you!
