OB Rotation is Hell
I am a male nursing student. I am doing well in school overall and acing my Med surg rotations--However, my OB rotation is pure hell! i feel useless and out of place. They tossed me out of a Birthing room today because I was in the way of the doctor and nurse! They make me feel like a jerk and like I dont belong there--I dont want to fail this rotation because --right now I feel like a incompetant idiot! What are your thoughts about OB and Male nurses?

Do you find that Nursing school was alot harder than actually working as a Rn?
I am in a 12 month BSN program. I am almost done with my second semester and looking forward to beginning the last one in January. I currently am carrying 20 credit hours and have Clinicals 3 times per week. I have four patients on a Cardiac Step down Tele unit each day. I dont have anyone holding my hand while before I pass meds--or anything else for that matter. It is stressful and I cant wait to finish school. Yes nursing is stressful too--I see the stress on the faces of many of the nurses during the day and evenings. Most of them are burnt out but some are not. I think that the shortage, and internal issues within the profession make things worse. It will only get worse--too bad so sad.

Did you once feel uncomfortable with blood, needles, vomit etc?
No, blood does not bother me, nor does vomit, internal organs or feces unless the patient is on Golytely--lol. You will get used to it dont worry.

Guys- what made you want to become a nurse?
I chose to go into nursing as a second career. I was always interested in nursing but went into business instead. I will graduate in May with a BSN. I like nursing but it is a tough job with a lot of challenges both professionally and politically. I like people and want to make some kind of a diffrence no matter how large or small. I did not have the calling, I dont like that expression because it insinuates that being a nurse is somthing you were ordained to do from birth. Nursing is a tough job, with flexible work hours and a decent salary, plus it can be rewarding and you can do many types of jobs in diffrent departments and specialties and even go into administration if you have the desire. That is all I have to say about that!

Im doubgting myself..can I really become a Nurse?
You can do it--just keep trying! I am graduating in April 08--BSN. You can learn all the skills--they are not that difficult! As far as IV's go--The difficulty depends on the patient--Some have good access and other dont have any! Nursing school is a pain--that is for sure--especially if you are going to do an 12 month BSN program--but it is worth it. Dont give up--

Need to vent...
Hey--For one thing--forget the chick--For another--finish school-pass your boards. I am in a 12 month accelerated BSN program--Talk about stress--it sucks but I am doing well and and going to be done in May 08. Now is the time to concentrate on becoming who you want to be--Nursing school is stressful--it is preparing you for a stressful job--sort of. Just start your career--and make that female a distant memory--it sounds like you will be glad you did--:monkeydance:

I graduate in May 08 from an accelerated program (12 months), I am in OB/LD right now--My first day I assisted with a Vag birth and did the full infant assessment, shots, eye antibiotic and bath. OB is great--the nurses are fantastic and my instructor is great-she says we will be doing somthing signifigant everyday. Dont sweat it--Just get through it and finish school. The more guys we can get into nursing the better it is going to be.

Oakland University vs U of D Mercy
I have attended Oakland University and have been accepted into U of D-Mercy's May 07 cohort SDO program. I decided to attend U of D because it has a very good program and had good connections with the Community. Their classes are smaller and they seems to actualy care about thier students. The Admissions process was also very good with the personnel at U of D being very professional at everystep of the process. It is more expensive--but you get what you pay for. Good Luck

woman's view, shocked at the emotional anger directed towards male students
It sounds like your program has a problems with discrimination--I am entering a Accelerated Second Degree Program this May for a BSN. It is at a Private Catholic University--I did enquire about this type of Discrimmination--The Nursing School Dept Head--Told me that No-one in the Second Deg Program has ever failed--And if an instructor was using gender as a device of discrmination --they would remove that instructor quickly.--It should raise a red flag to administration if all their male students are failing the program.

Changing careers but discouraged by a failed student
I have recently been accepted into an Accelerated BSN program. I am male and have worked in the Auto Industry as a Org Development Manager--However, my brothers Girlfriend who removed herself from an ADN program because she could not take the "Pressure" has been trying to discourage me from going into Nursing for the past year--She said the she could not piture me as a nurse because I am Male!--I was wondering if any of you were discouraged from entering Nursing by other people because you were male--and if so--how you dealt with it. My first instinct is to tell my brothers Girlfriend to buzz off! but I know that would not be productive. ANy advice would be welcome--Thanks John
