Poll: What do you love about the NICU?
Well,It seems like no one has posted on this site in a while but I am going to post anyway. I Will be graduating in 7 weeks with my BSN! I just wanted to post and say I have been working in the NICU since May of this year as a Student Nurse Extern and I absolutely LOVE it!! I know it definitely is a calling for me. When I was 10 I was telling everyone I wanted to be a neonatologist. Don't ask how I new what that was when I was young but somehow I did. Anyway, once I realized that it was the nurses that were giving the round the clock care I changed my tune to nursing. I absolutely can't tell you enough how much I love the NICU.It is my dream job! I feel so privileged to have gotten myself a spot there for when I graduate. My favorite part is being able to see a sick little 24 weeker become a fat chubby infant ready to go home! It is so awesome to be able to teach the parents how to care for their little one. I feel honored that I can be the one to help them get a good start in life. I love it, love it, love it! I definitely can't see myself doing any other kind of nursing but NICU! Also, to those who are students interested in the NICU: If you have a hospital nearby that hires Student Nurse Externs in the NICU, I HIGHLY recommend getting your foot in the door and learning about the field before graduation. Many of my peers are so scared for graduation because they feel as if they will be overwhelmed. I on the other hand feel relaxed and comfortable because I have been eased into the field and know the unit and how things work very well by now. Obviously my role will be changing, and I will have more responsibilities, with much more to learn, but I feel MUCH more comfortable than I would have had I not worked there previously. So, if the chance is available to you I think it is a very good experience and you will learn A LOT!!

IUPUI nursing school admissions
Hello! I have to say that I had a rough time trying to get into the nursing school at IUPUI. I had every credit I needed except for my nursing classes and had a 3.75 GPA. I wasted my time for 3 semesters to try and get in. I have to say hind site is 20/20. Do not put all your eggs in one basket like I did. I finally applied at Ball State University and I love it!! I wish I had applied sooner! Almost all of my credits transferred and I was able to get in right away! I will now FINALLY be graduating in December after 6.5 years of school. I definitely wasted my time by only counting on IUPUI. Every semester I thought I would do better and eventually get in and that was a BIG mistake! Definitely apply to as many schools as possible. I HIGHLY suggest Ball State. They are even implementing technologies that are helpful in the medical field today such as PDAs to get info quicker! I love BSU, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great nursing school. I have learned so much there.

overwhelmed!
I had the same problem with IVY tech about not getting straight answers. They told me the wrong deadline date and I missed it prolonging my admission further as I had applied 3 semesters in a row at IUPUI having taking all of my pre-requisites there and having all A's and a B and still did not get in there. I then tried BSU and I LOVE IT!! I was accepted there immediately and it is a wonderful program. I have learned so much there and though I have had to commute from Indy, has been a great experience. I would totally recommend going there. I am 24 and married and am using FAFSA to pay for my tuition. I highly recommend this program, and hope you would consider it. The drive really isn't that bad. Just straight up 69 about an hour from Indy (if you go a teensy bit over the limit. ;-) ) s

What Student Nurse externship is best/pays most?
Hello! I am currently a senior at Ball State and I will be graduating in December. I am wanting to get a Student Nurse Extern position for the spring so that I can get experience in the neonatal/OB and then when I graduate have a position. I am really uncertain as to which hospital would be the best fit as I have heard good things about all of them around the Indy area. I live near Fortville, and am wanting to either go to Community North, Methodist, or St. Vincent Carmel. If anyone has any idea how much SNE's make and then as a graduate nurse that would be great. Though money is important, I want to really enjoy where I am working, so if anyone has had good experiences at any of these hospitals and gets paid decently please share!! Thanks. It is so hard to believe my schooling is coming to an end and I will be a nurse. I really can't wait!!! Anyway, I would appreciate the help. Thanks. :monkeydance:
