  1. Originally the hospital's policy (which was made in 2001) stated that it required externs to pay back their tuition in relation to the hours they worked. Ex: If you worked 2,500 hours you would not owe anything back, if you worked 500 hours you would owe approximately 4,500 back. This policy was not being followed for nearly six years. None of the externs were made aware of this policy. We were only told that if we choose not to continue our employment after graduation, we would only owe the last semesters tuition. I took the job after that was verbally stated to me in my interview by both supervisors. I have spoken to other externs about this, most feel it is an injustice, however they do not appear as motivated to take action, because the majority already have their tuition payed in full by state and federal assistance.
  2. I currently work at a local hospital as a Nurse extern. I have been employed there for approximately two years now. I work 40 hours for 12 weeks in the summer and only occasionally during my school year. When interviewed for the position it was stated by both supervisors that the hospital would pay for my tuition while I was in school, and also pay me for my hours worked as an employee. Their only expectations were that I work 40 hours during the summer. If I choose not to take a position offered to me after graduation, then I will only owe the hospital the last semester costs of my tuition. The supervisors of the program are now saying that what they originally stated was a misunderstanding. All externs are expected to pay back any loans accrued subtracting a percentage of hours worked from that amount. To pay back 5,800$ worth of tuition payed by the hospital, I would have to work approximately 2,300 hours. My supervisors stated in front of every extern (about 15) that what they had originally promised at our interviews was not going to be fulfilled. However myself nor any other extern has a written contract with the hospital. I am debating contacting an attorney. Although there is no written contract, there was a verbal agreement which was promised to nearly 20 employees. Is this a legitimate legal matter? Any help is greatly appreciated. Please tell me your opinions and ideas. Thank You.
  3. Can anyone tell me about the application process for the IUS school of nursing? Or any other information about this school would be helpful as well. I am a pre-nursing student at IUPUC and If I do not get accepted into the program at IUPUI for this spring, I am considering applying to this campus in the fall. Thanks :)
  4. I will soon be applying for nursing school spring semester at IUPUI. I was wondering if spring semester is less competitive for admission than fall semester? Also does anyone know of any schools that I can apply to if I do not get accepted; what classes will easily transfer and what schools have equal admission requirements? I need to develop a plan B, in case I am not accepted. I have heard how difficult it is to get into this nursing school. Any info wound be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  5. I am currently a student nurse extern working at a hospital. I will be applying to nursing school at IUPUI in about one week. The program I am in is a great experience, they teach us everything we will need to learn in our clinicals and more. We rotate from ICU, PCU, med-surg, Peds, ER, OR, OB and ICU each on a two week basis rotating shifts between days, evenings, nights, and weekends 40 hours a week. It is intense. It is paid position and is a three year program during the summer. They pay all of my tuition and it is a paid position. I was really pleased to find this opportunity. Last week we had our evaluations half way into this summers program. One girl was dismissed from the program because of not having the 'professional' nature to work in nursing. She showed up to work on time every day. The reasons for her dismissal were hypocritical because many of the nurses in charge of the program do the same things. I believe they didn't like her from the beginning. During my eval they told us what our greatest strengths were and what our weaknesses are. My greatest strengh was that I am 'very hard working' and professional. They told me I am always busy and 'run circles around the other externs' because of my hardworking nature. However, they told me that my greatest weakness is that I tend to be 'curt and defensive' with some members of the staff. They told me I am a very confident person but some people may perceive that as arrogance. I do not understand how I am 'curt and defensive,' I am friendly to all members and willing to help all members. They said that when asked about something ill reply with things like (say for instance I make a mistake charting) "Yes, I apologize, I'll be more careful". I simply do not understand what is wrong with this. Should I act apprehensive and lose my confidence so it is not perceived as arrogance? I feel like I am disliked even though I try to be friendly and joke around with people at work. I just do not like to engage in the workplace gossip so perhaps this makes me excluded. Any Ideas on this dilemma? What should I do?
  6. I am a pre-nursing student at IUPUC (soon applying for admission to BSN nursing program at IUPUI). I have heard negative things about the transition programs, so I would only suggest them if you are unable to go for the full four year, or two year program, that requires application. As for IUPUC, I really enjoy the campus, it is a great place to start your pre-recs because they transfer so easily to so many IU campuses. Good Luck.
  7. Like the majority of pre-nursing students, I am extremely apprehensive about getting into nursing school. I will be applying to IUPUI (Indiana University, Purdue University in Indianapolis) in about 10 days for spring semester clinicals. I know I have some time before I find out but I have heard the school is very competitive and I am unsure as to whether I will be accepted. Any Ideas, anyone from this University? Cumulative G.P.A of 3.6 I would potentially have a 3.8, but a class I decided to take to "Brush up" on my math skills, turned out to be a disaster. I got a D+! However, this grade is not part of the nursing curriculum but plays into my cumulative G.P.A. I have had A's, A-, and one B+ in Anatomy in my core nursing classes so far. I have done numerous volunteer work, and shadowed several times. This summer I have been currently working at a hospital as a Student Nurse Extern.., I rotate to all units, all shifts. It is very demanding but I have learned so much. I function under the supervision of a nurse who teaches me according to my level in the three year program (my third year I function as a nurse). At IUPUI, a interview is required for acceptance, (it is 30% of their decision!) During my interview I intend to focus on my experience working as a student nurse extern because unlike many students, from my experience, I truly know what the occupation entails. Any comments are appreciated. I would love to hear from someone who attends IUPUI nursing school. Thanks.
