Nantucket, I currently attend the Warren campus and I'm in the LPN program, bridging to RN. I am really struggling. Everyone tells me it's like this at first, but I am getting discouraged. I don't know how to live the next two years of my life with that horrible feeling in my stomach. I was a 4.0, have no idea what I'm at currently. Struggling with Pharmacology big time You should be very proud of what you have accomplished! Any tips or advice on keeping sanity is welcomed. If you want to, you can private message me. RN4LIFE, How are you doing? I was thinking about you the other day and wondered if you got into the program. I never ever imagined nursing school to be this difficult. My GPA is shot to heck. I pray everyday to keep my eye on the big picture, because most of the time I want to throw in the towel.

Hello, I currently attend Davenport. I took all my pre-reqs there and if I could do it again, I too would take them at a community college and then apply to a nursing program. Davenport is very expensive. There were over 400 applicants for the LPN program and 60 got accepted. We start in September and end August of 09. You then have the choice to go on to RN there, or take a break and work as an LPN or go elsewhere. However we have to let them know this December what our intentions are. It's called a letter of intent. My clinicals are at the VA hospital downtown, a little leary. But they do have day clinicals and afternoon clinicals to make it accommodating. I started taking my pre-reqs in 2003 while working at Ford. It's been a long road, but I have to admit I am very nervous. I currently work as a PCA at a hospital and hope that will help. I insert and remove foley cath's, remove IV's, and many other procedures, so this may take the edge of when having a clinical coordinator behind me watching. My schedule is pretty good. I start Sept. 8 and will only be going Monday and Tuesday, then come the end of October I'll be going Monday's 10-1pm, Tuesday 10-1 lecture then 3-9 clinicals, no school on Wed, clinical on Thursday from 3-9, no school on Friday. Having two days off during the week is nice. No fighting traffic either. Hope some of this helps out, and feel free to ask anything you are curious about.

RN4Life, I would think you are an alternate. My other friend got her denial letter a couple of weeks ago. Right now we are being given a chance to choose what schedule we would ultimately want. We meet on August 12th to see if we were given our first choice. I bet at that time there may be people that cannot due a certain shift and have to drop out....I have a good feeling for you....if you have any questions on the timeline we have, just ask...

I would try St. Mary Mercy hospital in Livonia. The title is called PCA, fancy for nurses aide. Come September they will be hiring massively due to school starting back up. I work there now and I'm getting so much experience with inserting and removing catheters, removing IV's and of course anything that the nurse doesn't want to do. The one thing that is making me nervous is the last four days I have been low censused because of low patient to nurse ratio. I chose to be contingent so that I could work when and what days I want too, so if my floor has to few patients then I either get pulled to a dif floor or low censused. I signed up to be put in a float pull so that on my days off I can call and check if they are short handed I have a friend that works at U of M and at Oakwo:heartbeatod and they too have been being "LCD" low censused. I truly believe that with all the loss of jobs everywhere and loss of insurance is impacting the way people handle their health. I worked for Ford for 13 years and was let go a year ago and my insurance is up, luckily I have my husbands, but there are a lot of people I know that now have no insurance or nothing compared to what we had. I think people will wait and see if they get better before paying a huge deductible. Another good idea is to call hospitals and see if you can shadow in different units, it's a good way to get to know people. I swear I am praying for you two that are posting to each other. I'm going to remain contingent and work one or two days a month to stay on the roster. No working during the program, I am giving the rest to God to guide me on how to pay my bills Sorry for rambling, but I do care.

I just read the SNO and that is for Midland students. They have a student nurse org at that campus.

Hi, I saw the SNO but didn't read it. I guess I will right now. It almost seems if they would only send that out to students that were accepted. Both my friend and I called our advisors to just say we got the letters and neither one of them called back. Maybe they are slammed with calls, but that was 4 days ago. I do have issues with call backs. Unfortunately you made a good point about the money being due by July 7th and not getting a letter yet. Did anyone have Dr. Gray for A&P?

Yes, the letters were acceptance letters for the LPN program. Funny how my advisor told me they were being sent certified this year and it wasn't. It was in a large white envelope that said "Davenport Welcomes You" on the front. I heard that at least 10 people usually do not send in their money due to something changing in their life. At this point, I think your advisors should tell you what is going on, it's just not fair to deal with the anxiety of not knowing and trying to figure out what to do as far as work at the same time. You really can't work while in the program because it's Monday thru Thursday full time. I'm giving that part to God to help me figure out what I will do financially.

Hi RN 4 Life, We have to have the 150.00 at Davenport by July 7th to reserve the seat. I would imagine there are people that have had things change in their life and won't be attending and that will open up more seats. It's still very aggrivating not knowing. So far I know 5 people that got their letter on Monday. I am still praying......

I just talked to my friend and she got her acceptance letter today. I bet they will be trickling out this week.....

You are very right about so many different stories going around. My good friends advisor says the exact opposite of what my advisor says and that makes me nervous. I have to send in 150.00 by July 8th to reserve my seat for the fall 08 program. The first all day orientation is August 12th in Warren and the packet provides all the immunizations that you have to have done by then, along with a clearance from your physician. It is pretty in depth. There is no way I am dropping it off at his office, he is going to fill it out with me, I don't need him messing anything up. I have a feeling the letters just started going out. I called my advisor and left a message that I recieved mine, because she told me they were coming certified mail in July!!!!!!! Farthest from what really happened. I read the letter a few times to make sure I didn't read it wrong. Andrea Hutson is in charge of admissions, so if you have any questions you may want to contact her. Just call the Dearborn campus and ask to be transfered to her extension. Hi, I am also waiting for letter. I talked to my advisor last week and she said they are starting to conduct a survey regarding a plan B if you are not accepted. I do have a plan B and relayed it to her. She said by no means does this indicate anything. I do have a 4.0, but scored a 78 on the HESI, go figure. She kept reiterating that my GPA is excellent and that the survey has nothing to do with being accepted or denied. I was thinking maybe it is part of the process, because I could tell she wasn't writing anything down. I asked her if I should register for these classes just in case and she said if I did, we can just cancel them later on. She told me letters are being sent out in July via certified mail. She also sd the HESI is only 20% of the overall acceptance decision. She broke it down to GPA being 50%, essay's and recommendation as 30% and HESI as 20%. That would be great if what she is saying is true. Just so many different stories going around. I always check if they have determined the times and days of the nursing classes in Warren, but not yet. However, I think it is Midland that is showing days and times and people already registered for clinicals. I guess unless the mail man knocks on the door with a green card for us to sign, no use in racing through each piece of mail. This is torture for us!!!

I'm in math 030 right now and I'm struggling. I have math 120 in the summer and I am very nervous about that class. I have a 4.0 right now, but that will be lowered this semester....

I just spoke to my advisor, spring summer will be the last term for career and education seminar, and will be replaced with Health 101 in fall. But if you have taken the career class you do not need to take the Health 101. I don't think the class you are talking about is needed anymore....are you taking the HESI in January? Does anybody know if the HESI is more of an assessment or is it a pass/fail type of exam.

I am also doing my pre-req's at Davenport. I went online yesterday to take a look at the program and the req's for the LPN, RN, and BSN have changed again. There are classes that I have taken that are no longer a requirement.....I left a message for my advisor to call me....I'm starting to get a little apprehensive about everything....

Wow!!! $70 a credit hour?? May I ask where you attend? That is a huge difference....

Hello, I will be losing my job in August and going to school almost full time starting in September. I want to work part time in a health care facility and I think by being able to do blood draws and so forth it would make me more marketable until I start my clinicals. I'm trying to find a seminar/workshop for phlebotomy. I did find one online through Medtexx. They will be in Toledo March 24th, its from 8am to 8pm and you get nationally certified. BUT, it costs $350.00. My cousin who is an RN said to call local hospitals and ask to shadow someone in the lab to get started. I called St. Mary's and they do let you shadow, but I have to call back on Monday. Does anyone know of a seminar/workshop for phlebotomy? Thanks...

Definately GO FOR IT. I'm 38, started my pre-req's last year and now only have 3 more to go. There are many good colleges in Michigan. I attend Davenport University because you can go part time all the way thru. I'm not financially able to go full time and not work, so this fits my criteria perfect. I would look into all different colleges and their requirements and pick one that suits your lifestyle. If you have children that makes it very challenging, but I make my 6 year old a walking skeleton and put post its all over her labeling the body parts, and she is learning with me. Email the colleges you are interested in, or call them and ask them to send you their nursing packet, then just review all the information. Hope this helps...

Hi Everyone, I absolutely love this site, I have learned so much. I have 3 more pre req's to take and those are all my BIO's.....I am currently learning about DNA, and am having a hard time with quizzes and tests. I'm thinking my problem is because I'm used to just memorizing, and now I have to apply what I am learning. I will take any suggestions....should I keep drawing pictures over and over? I.E. the cell, and now DNA... Thanks!!

Unfortunately it is very expensive, I believe 420.00 a credit hour, compared to HFCC which is like 130.00 a credit hour. It is more expensive because it is a private university, and is the only University in Michigan that offers the nursing program part time. It also accepts more ways of payment, financial aid, pell grants, tons of scholarships. It is geared toward the working person more so then high school graduates, and the instructors pretty much work a day job and teach in the evening so they understand the stress. I think the first nursing class will be graduating either in 2007 or 2008. They are extremely flexible with fitting the classes in with your work schedule. Getting in the nursing program is based on many things, I know of one student that failed the HESI, but was still accepted because of her grades and essay. I am attending the main Dearborn campus, but they will be closing that one effective fall of 08 to build a state of the art campus with focus on the nursing program. The nursing advisors are fantastic and very motivational. Once you are accepted into the the program and start your clinicals, you can do those part time if need be. They understand that people just can't quit and go to school. It's a very mature atmosphere and the comadre is great. I have my A&P 1 and 2 left along with intermediate algebra, oh and professional ettiquete..if you have any other questions or want to email me directly for more information, just let me know.
