  1. Thanks iluvrvt for sharing your personal experience. Before I posted the original message, I googled all kinds of terms but not the terms you mentioned exactly so I'll try that. I understand what the guidelines are and why, but for my assignment I need literature references that support the practice. Thanks
  2. I am a student doing my Med-Surg rotation on a hem-onc floor. The standard practice there is to do manual blood pressure measurments rather than using the automatic blood pressure devices, and I was told it was because of low platelets and bleeding/bruising risk. Is this evidence-based practice? It makes sense, but I am looking for literature to support this for an assignment, and I can't seem to find any! Anyone have anything on this?? [As an aside, I hope to be an oncology nurse and feel very fortunate to be working on this floor!]
  3. Hi all, I have been lurking here for a while but have only posted once -- in the previous admission year when I did not even get an interview. I am thrilled to say that I made it in this year!!! In retrospect, the intervening year was very valuable in becoming a more well-prepared candidate. My specialty is Oncology. Any others out there? I live in a part of East Bay that is, unfortunately, not as diverse as Oakland, but we'll stay here cuz it's where we are rooted and I wouldn't move my kids from their schools. And I have to say, my BART-Muni ride on Interview Day was less stressful and shorter than my car ride to my second interview in SF the following week -- if you count having to look for parking. With parking in mind, I'm going to stick with public transportation. I'm hoping to use the commute time to do a little studying (realistic?). I did this successfully when I was taking pre-reqs, but this is will be a different level of intensity. I'd be curious to know if there are any others out there who are embarking on this journey with kids at home? I hope I'm not too crazy taking this on. Congratulations to all who made it in this year -- I look forward to meeting you all! To those who didn't make it in this year -- keep trying!
  4. Hi all I"m a new registered member (been lurking for months) but I just HAD to post, as I just received my dreaded thin letter from UCSF yesterday. It's not like I didn't know this was a competative program, but I really didn't reallistcally plan for the rejection. You know -- was trying to focus on the positive. I did have a vague "plan B" which is to apply again next year (which I will definitely do), but I now have other things to work out, like getting a job (I was laid off this summer), blah blah blah. I'll think about my path after the holidays. For sure I am going to try to get input from the program after Feb 1 '07 as to how I can stregthen my application -- although CameronRex's post makes a little cynical about that. But UCSF's program is excellent and it's really the only one I am interested in in this general area (SF Bay Area). Moving out of the area isn't an option for me. Congratulations to all of you who got accepted!!!! I am especially encouraged by SciFry's acceptance, as I am 45 and wondered if my age was a factor. Anyhow, I hope you all enjoy the program and get out there and make a difference in the nursing world!
