cpr - a lot of students in my class used this lady: cindy lewis, rn; heartbeat; 972/733-4936. she teaches the class at preston/campbell area. she was awesome and she teaches the healthcare provider course(cpr & aed) and the basic life support (bls) all in one. if there is still time at the end of the session she also shows you how to do cpr on a dog, with, i guess you would call it a dogequin. anyway, she is an rn here in the dallas area and it was a great class. you have to renew every year in the program, even thought the card is for two years. we usually got about 10 students together for the class, but i'm sure she could probably accommodate more. good luck!

it was just urine for us, but was nothing i had to worry about. i have a suggestion for those of you that have found each other here. set up a coffee date to meet each other, that's what i did, and i am now very closely bonded with the ones i met early on. the support you will get/give to one another is amazing. you guys rock on and have fun! i have white pants if anyone is interested.

to those trying to decide when to take pharm...i would recommend taking it as late as possible. my rationale? once you get into clinicals you will want those drugs to be fresh in your minds. i took pharm way too early and had to really study up on them. you will need to know cardiac meds to a "t". i just wish i had waited a little longer b4 taking pharm. good luck!

just wanted to take a moment and tell all the new applicants... good luck! bh is a wonderful program. now with that being said i want you to realize that there will be many times that changes take place at the very last moment, be patient, i just want you to know up front. there are many people involved in scheduling; clincals for example, the hospitals have to say "yes", then they have to staff accordingly, and then they may have a problem, and then it becomes your problem...get it? but don't be discouraged, all programs have their own set of issues, bh does a very good job at what they do and have a wonderful success rate. if you have any questions feel free to post them here on this thread. there are several past students that still sign on and give advise and answer questions. you are not alone! you will feel like it at times, but your not if you just speak up. so take a deep breath, hang on, and have fun!

hey future rn's, i know exactly the feeling that you all are having right now. i finished up this august at bh but have not yet taken my nclex...studying! anyway...just wanted to tell you that if you go to the original thread that was started for bh, you will find that several of us still go on to that thread and would be most happy to chime in from time to time and offer support to you. plus it keeps everyone all together to build that family feeling. points (forget about 'em), like one of you stated they won't know the point range until the last minute. be thankful for the interview. it is a wonderful opportunity to show them confidence, maturity and willingness to adapt to just about anything. honestly, we had some students get in with low 20's because they were able to show that they were right for the program in the interview. there are people with 4.0 gpa's that would not do well in nursing school, it takes just the right person to be a nurse. let them see "that" person, and show them with confidence. this is a wonderful journey and i wish you all the best of luck!

if any bh nursing program "newbies" want to buy any text books or resource books for their future classes, let me know by private message with your phone number/email or post here and i'm sure we can get you some books. there are several people in my class willing to sell books. it's either sell them or burn them! and we could use the money :chuckle.

working and nursing school. one thing that you might want to consider is: if you are married and/or have children, working full-time may not be feasable. like sandy, i worked part-time through the first half of our program. then it just became too much for me and i quit. i am married and have an eight-year-old. and there were many times that i had to choose between spending extra time studying or spending time with my family. plus there is the kids homework, baths, etc. that have to be taken care of each night. even if you have a very supportive s.o., the kids still want you. another thing to consider along with the family is that brookhaven does not take the summers off like other programs. therefore, you can get burned out really fast if you don't take a little time for yourself. so, just take into consideration what you might want to use those "extra" little hours for....family, self, studying, work, etc. many students have pulled it off, but everyone's circumstances are different, and i think most of those that worked were single w/o kids. good luck to y'all.

omg...you're in, you're in, you're in! congrats to all the "baby" nurses! everyone that has posted is right. it goes by so fast. classes - get what you can out of the way. patho-get the "incredible easy" book. asap, practice dosage calc. steth - i got the cheap one, a spraggue...works great...$20. white scrubs - get tide pen (works great). wear "your" skin tone underwear. just because the scrubs are white doesn't mean that's the best color for you...get in front of a mirror people!!! work - i did, part-time...full-time...forget it! that's just me. i'm married have have a young son. instructors - love them all! had routh for clinicals 1 and 2. didn't cry. she is tough, but it made me stronger. i only heard of her "yelling" one time. basically people cryed because you're just worn plum out. lecture, clinical, late late late nights. she is amazing! had schmitt for preceptorship. she is awesome too! realy gets your mind clicking. it's an amazing journey...emotions run high and low. don't be surprised if fellow students (or yourself) get a little b***hy. it happens, and then your/they're over it. just hang on and have fun! later!

normal???? yes, welcome to your new world for the next 15 months. if you have done all that you have listed...you should be just fine. words of encouragement...do the meds pub questions over and over, study like a dog now, and then don't look at it on monday. eat a good breakfast, relax, and take ear plugs to the testing center (they help a lot!) oh, and don't read to much into the questions, listen to your gut. most questions that were missed were becuz we changed our answers. you sound like you are really prepared, just do as many practice questions as you can. good luck and be strong!:pumpiron: toni

i totally agree with kaley! just relax! i had a difficult time doing that during my check offs and that is what got the best of me. i didn't fail too many of them but when i did, it was nerves! don't get psyched out, try to go first if you can (trade numbers), get it over with so you don't have to sit there getting worked up. relax, relax, relax! like kaley said...everyone fails a check-off eventually, some fail the first time everytime, but that doesn't mean you won't pass the course, everyone of us failed checkoffs and everyone of us passed the course. practice, practice, practice! even if it is by yourself in your living room! the more you go thru it you will get it. it is the repetion. we also got together at the public library if the lab was closed, or at each others houses. get creative! if you need a practice buddy...call me...i can always use the practice! oh, and don't forget to breath! later

Josh, So glad to hear that you are enjoying your job. I tried to email your thru this site last week and it wouldn't let me. We heard last tuesday from Ms. M, that 3 of your peers have passed NCLEX. Good luck to you! We will all be praying for you.

no, we do not wear our scrubs to school for any classes. you have probably been seeing some of the ems students or just students that work out in the field already and are coming from/going to work. but your right...the scrubs are very comfy! you still haven't replied to my question of: what's your lecture/skills lab schedule? a bunch of us would like to drop by and say "hi". have a great day.

we go back tomorrow and i can't wait. you probably won't have a lot of schedule changes, we didn't really have that many. we never have really had class cancelled but we have had a few seminar type dates that we only had a few days notice on. as far as the feeling that things are disorganized...well, that is with any program. i have heard a lot worse about other programs, we are pretty lucky, just be ready to be flexible and hopefully your job will support you thru it. and like the other girls said, don't worry about your kit just yet. they have supplies in the lab that will be available until you get your kit. they have you give them most of it in the beginning anyway. don't forget to try to get more students from your class posting on here so we can all chit chat, and lend the little bit of wisdom that we have. so what are your class dates now? see ya on campus, toni

we start back on the 14th too. we will be in lecture from 9-1 (i think thats right). what is your schedule going to be like? let everyone know in your class about allnurses; as you can see, it is a great tool. i saw all the chat about our wonderful white scrubs...i, like susan (aka; buttercup fields) bought three pairs because of the three day in a row thing. with that being said, i am willing to part with a pair or two of the pants. if you or anyone else is interrested private email me. they are landau 2x, elastic with drawstring, double pocket on both legs. the pockets are so awesome. they are in super condition, i just won't need three pair anymore and thought it could save someone some money...i'm willing to make a deal! also let me know if ya'll need a book for skills lab call "stat". it's a workbook that we used, but i made copies instead of tearing out the pages. they were talking about retiring it so you may not need it. spread the word. toni
