There seems to be a crisis brewing as you all know. This is a crisis of capacity. It seems to exist in medicine as well as nursing. I have been captivated by the discussion that has arisen simply by way of introduction. My original desire when coming on line here was to learn more about how nurses become good or better educators - what is the pedagogy of nursing. I found a couple of programs in medicine related to how to design, develop and maintain curriculum - but so far nothing in nursing about this area other than to teach how to be nurses. Nurses then leave nursing and become nurse educators without having had the training or developmental work to consolidate the skills required to develop edcuation programs. If I were you I would set some realtistic timelines and seek to have a crew trained to become program developers - a very special skill set, of course. I know of a program now that is giving specialized workshops to resident surgeons about how to become educators, because "oops' they never taught them while they were in training but now they have to teach - poor up and coming residents in training. I would first secure a commitment to long term service (e.g. 5 years) for anyone I made expense to train in education program design, etc.

I know what you mean. There are no faculty bios on the site. when I search for some of the faculty in the literature, it turns out that they are publishing in the pre-eminent journals of medical edcuation - for example, Donnon published in Academic Medicine just last October!!! This indicates that the faculty are the real thing! I know what you mean about student loans! I was lucky to be able to work quite a bit on the way to my BSN. Hey F, what do yuo think you would do with a degree in nursing and one of these certificates in Medical Edcuation. You could probably get in on the ground florr of a med ed department. It seems these are just starting to form around the country.

I think that this program, like others will provide participating nurses with the essentials - provided they are prepared, intelligent and want to become better educators. I am thinking of getting in touch with them to find out more about their program. I have not yet received any feedback here about what training programs exist for nursing education. It seems that medicine is ahead of us in this endeavor. Maybe by attending such med ed programs, nurses can learn about the core requirements for developing similar programs in for training nurses about how to improve nursing education - not that nursing education lacks anything, but we can always get better, especially if we learn how to formally study nursing pedagogy. You know, so we can identify what approaches to educating nurses work best - that means have the best evidence!!

Hey F nightengown It seems that we have a common interest in higher education. Note, F Nightengown, that the face to face component of the http://www.internationalgme.org MTC certificate is in Assisi, Italy. Not Milan. I really can't imagine who might attend this certificate course in medical edcuation, (doctors I imagine) but it does look interesting and econimical if you compare it to a vacation in Italy. It really does look interesting, does it not!!! The principles of the school that provides this certification apear to be directed towards health-related education and could in general encompass nursing education prinicples, so it may be of interest to us Nurses.

Hi F Nigthengown, What were you doing in Milan? How long ago did you graduate? Are you as concerned about improving nursing education too? The http://www.internationalgme.org does look interesting doesn't it? I mean what a romantic getaway for a new grad!!! Tuscany!! 4 weeks and a teaching certificate for the price of a high end holday with nothing but debt at the end! Who do you think will be there? Have you emailed them yet?? Dani

Thanks Val I think that it is important to attend an accredited nursing school, especially when you can get funding!! Newnurse sent the link http://www.internationalgme.org because it seemed to her to address the main issue which is my concern and question. That is "How do trained nurses find programs that can train them to be better educators?" Even if a nurse has a Master's degree, is there anything in the core courses that she (or he) takes that indicates that she has the requisite training as an educator? Where are the formal training programs in NURSING? This is the movement that seems to be afoot in medicine - Have we caught up already, are we ahead of the pack and no longer have to think about this? I don't think so. Somebody help me. please!

I have seen one program with three levels of medical education degree that looks good; one of them is brief and looks great in that you are awarded a master teaching certificate! One component of the program is online and one component is face to face. The face to face part is in Italy. Imagine that!!!! International Graduate Program in Medical Education The whole program looks comprehensive, but the MTC seems to provide a real immersion for about the cost of a high end vacation for the same period of time!
