Hello everyone, I'm an NP student from Canada and will eventually like to travel abroad. The NP role is relatively new around the globe, and I'm aware jobs in Australia for NP's are slowly popping up. Does anyone know the salary of an NP in Australia? I understand wages will differ between states, but any information would be helpful. Also, are there any websites to view for NP jobs in Australia? Thanks!

I'm a male RN from Canada with two years experience, primarily in emergency and general medicine. I'm thinking of travel nursing within the next year, with particular attention towards Dubai. I have several questions. A) How is the salary? From my research, I can expect to gross $2500-3000/month (U.S) tax free along with free accomodations. I've read that salary depends on the agencies and hospital you work at? B) Are there any downsides to being a male working in the nursing field in Dubai? C) How is the nursing practice compared to Canada/U.S? Thanks!

Where do you guys purchase your scrubs from? I can't find any places online that are suitable for men. I prefer scrubs which material is similar to ones you would wear in the O.R. Thanks!

Do many hospitals in Australia offer 12 hour shifts? If so, which state are you from, which hospital do you work at, and department do you work in? I'm from Canada and 12 hours are typical. I don't think I could do 8 hour shifts after going to 12 hours.

I've debated on moving to Australia (from Canada) for 2 years now and after many debates with myself, I hope to make the trip in a year. Brisbane is my area of choice to live as it is less busy than NSW and the cost of living is cheaper. I have had the opportunity to visit Brisbane for a month and loved the crowd. Felt like a second home. Several concerns arise. Finding a job - What is the best way about obtaining a full-time, 1 year + job offer in a hospital? How long in advance should I begin searching? Are particular nursing agencies a wise choice for a foreigner, or perhaps contacting all the hospitals directly and seeing what is available? If it was assisting someone in Canada, it would be the latter. I only say 1 year as of now because the temporary working visa only allows of 1 year. Accommodations - Would any hospital set me up with accommodations for an alloted period of time so that I am given adequate time to find a place to stay? Is it worth while to live near the city and pay more for rent as oppose to living further out and driving in? What is a average price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment, furnished and unfurnished? I've search many apartment rental websites, but because of the vast locations in Brisbane, I am having a difficult time narrowing places down. I am particularly interested in the private hospitals (as they are similar to Canada's health care system). That's it for now. More questions to come. Thanks for your help in advance!

I just realized no one addressed pension. Can anyone provide figures to the pension offered in larger hospitals, such as UofA? What is the contribution % yourself, matching % from emploer, etc...

Leaving because I have no family here and limited things to do. I came for one reason - to pay of my school loans. The pay is the highest in the nation, but money is not the reason to keep me. Cost of living is expensive. When there is nothing to do, you can only save. I'm glad I am getting the experience, but in the end, money will not by me happiness. I figured i'd stay for a few years, but I quickly realized how much I love the city life. Life is too short and to each is their own. Some people love it up here - me, not so much :)

Is the rental vacancy really that low? I have a friend living in a high rise apartment building and there are many 1 and 2 bedrooms available. She says it was quite easy to find a place. Are the rates for renting reasonable? The temperatures do drop, but you get use to it :) I have yet to be exposed to a winter, but it shouldn't be too bad - Just have to bundle up :)

So, who here has worked in either province and what can you comment about their pension and benefits etc..? I use to work in Ontario and HOOPP (Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan) isn't that greatest in my opinion. It's mediocre. The health benefits are also just basic too. I feel as though I was 'just getting by'. After talking with a friend who work's ICU in UofA, the pension seems quite good (did not get into figures), and the health benefits are outrageous. Glasses, laser eye surgery, massage.. at great rates, far superior than Ontario. Forgot to mention their recent pay increase. I'm asking these questions as I'm debating where I'd like to move to next. Being from Ontario, i'm hesitant on returning (currently in the NWT), but all family and friends reside there. As for Alberta? Great opportunities, but no family. The debate is on. Thanks for any info.

I understand this could also be in the Australia forum, but I hope to grab the attention of Canadians. If you worked there, did you sign on with an agency? If so, which one? Any recommended hospitals to work in? I would like to work emerg if possible. How long did it take you to obtain your temporary working Visa? Which specific working visa did you get? Do you need to obtain an Aus license, or is our license Transferable? (someone told me it was) I will have more questions, but for now those will suffice. I hope someone can help me out! Thanks

In a previous thread I was linked to several sites to help me interupt EKG's. The links were helpful, except I am still having difficulties understanding Axis and Amplitude when reading the material. I simply don't grasp the concept and it's purpose and how it applied to the EKG on paper. Any help would be great! Thanks

Jayceee, I'm in a similar boat as you. I've done quite a bit of research and am contemplating when I want to go to Australia. I'm from Ontario, currently working in the NWT. This forum is great and answered many of my inquiries. A few things I want to share. I've been to Australia last year for a month and I fell in love with the country. I visited Brisbane. I personally feel as a nurse, it's more about lifestyle if you decide to go and work. Nurses do not earn as much as they should. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but starting wage is around 23/hr? I forget.. but there pay scale is also quite different from Canada and lower. The cost of living is kind of high in comparison to Canada. Rent is kind of costly. I've seen anywhere from 250-400/week for rent for a nice one bedroom. Food is also quite more. I found several websites comparing the prices, but essentially stuff is 'almost' doubled the price. It takes about 8 months (from what i've read) to obtain a temporary working visa. I have yet to find a reputable agency, but several individuals from this thread seem to have suggested good ones. I've heard excellent things about the Royal Brisbane. I believe their shifts are only 8, compared to our standard 12's. I hope that helped some.. maybe i'll bump into you one time

Hello everyone, I work in a rural hospital and quite frequently I'm faced with EKG's and X-Rays and alot of the time I would love to interupt them properly and discuss treatments with the doctors. I frequently question the doctors and sometimes they have no idea, so I would like to know myself. I've taken ACLS and quite frequently refer back to my text books, but I still find the books don't help explain things enough. Does anyone have any interactive websites that explains X-Rays and EKG's and how to properly interupt them. I would like detailed websites, with many examples if possible. I have yet to find any good material. Thank you

I'm from Canada and have also though of nursing on a visa in hope to obtain permanent residency. From other forums this is what I gathered. I'm still confused as to what visa to get. If your nursing qualifications are recognised in Australia you should get enough points for a 136 skilled visa. That is the one to aim for. It allows you unconditional residency (you can live and work where you like). Also, as soon as you arrive, you will be classed as a permanent resident (you can stay forever with no need to extend visas or anything else). You can apply for full citizenship after 2 years (though this may change to 3 or more years soon). Another - STNI visa which means we are sponsored by the WA govt and need to stay in the Perth area for 2 years. But this visa gives you permanent residency on arrival unlike the 136 independant - although you are free to go anywhere with that. Other visas have conditions to be met such as living in a designated area for 2 years and doing a certain type of job before you can apply for permanent residency.
