I think that you should not be so quick to pass judgement on the school system in Hawaii when the grammar in your post leaves much to be desired. You might want to think about "spell check" prior to sending your posts. Also, if you did get a proper education, you would realize that your statement about sending your child back to the states is incorrect, as Hawaii IS A STATE. You made comments of this nature twice in your posting. Loving mom, if you are deciding to relocate to Hawaii, you may contact me at any time. I will help you make the adjustments and find suitable schools for your children. I can also make some suggestions regarding housing, travel, sites and attractions, and anything else you can think of. Don't let one person's experience ruin it for you. I believe that the attitude that a person carries with them will dictate the experiences they are likely to have. Finally, if you decide to work for Tripler as an agency or travel nurse, you will get paid less than everyone else. It is common knowledge amongst Hawaii nurses that Tripler pays less. This is because they have binding fixed rates that are worked into their contracts. Agencies can not pay employees more because from a business standpoint, it is just impossible. However, if you decide to become a staff nurse there, the pay is pretty good as they add in a 25% cost of living allowance. The also have a child care co-op on site if you have small children.

I think that school is what you make of it. I attended school in Hawaii and was accepted to several prestigious universities on academic scholarship. Currently my son is in a gifted and talented program and has scored in the superior range for National Assessment tests. Yes, teachers ALL OVER THE COUNTRY need to continue with CEU's and other training in order to provide the best learning experiences for our children. I am not denying that. But I also believe that it is the parents' responsibility, as well, to make sure that their children are recieving that quality education, and also acting as adjunct teaching staff at home, to continue the learning process. My husband is from Texas and I have been there often. There are some schools there, and children, that desperately need to be saved. I believe that every school, just like every hospital, has their own horror stories. It is unfair to make generalizations and blanket statements about the state as a whole.

At most facilities in Hawaii it is standard to have insulin double checked with 2 licenses. However, in the ER/ICU setting, it is often given without hunting down for someone to double check because of the nature of the setting.

I have worked for them. At first they seemed ok. But after a while, it became obvious that they were only concerned with making money and not keeping their employees happy. Unfortunately because they were one of the first agencies started here, there name is familiar to everyone, so everyone automatically thinks they must be the place to go. However, I have also worked for several different agencies who were all wonderful. They were concerned about my needs and didn't get upset if I decided not to work for a couple of weeks (isn't that flexibility what agency nursing is all about!) Anyway, there are a couple of new ones out there. The most recent one I worked for was Critical Nursing Services. I believe they pay the highest at this time. Hope that helps!
