Msn,rn,apn,acns-bc,cen,cpen
Please don't be personal, it is not a rant, merely an observation. Yes my CNM took many years of studying. The reason I included the "alphabet soup" as someone described it, was to illustrate irony. I don't feel that I have to list these accreditations every time I write my name in an article or sign a form.

At this point I am sure you are wondering exactly what this thread is about. I don't usually initiate a thread, however, I am trying to read an article in ENA "Connection." It is nearly impossible to get through the text due to the infinite listing of every single qualification that the author(s) listed in the article happen to possess. Are we really so insecure that we feel that it is necessary to list every $300 certification that we happily paid the certifying "authority" to assign us? Surely these accreditations could be listed at the end of the article. Agreed, any degree, be it a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate has merit. It requires a lot of hard work. These other certifications, however, are fairly easy to get. Study the question bank and sit the test. Why is this trend currently perpetrated throughout the nursing profession? Do you find it tiresome? RN, CNM, RGN, RMN, RNC, CLE.

I failed a prereq
I would finish the class. Even if you fail, you will still get exposure to the study material which will help you when you retake the class - it is a pre-requisite so I assume you can keep retaking it. If you withdraw from the class I think you will feel worse and the prospect of taking the class again will cause even more anxiety. I sympathize with you as I dislike math also. Good luck and please don't give up.

Is it fair for the media to blame the RN in Texas for contracting Ebola?
Why not blame the government for allowing flights from infected areas to land in the United States? They still refuse to deal with this issue. Secondly, let's blame the airline and their screening policies for allowing this man to fly. They verbalized that they thought people would be honest in filling out the questionnaire! Just so much easier to blame the victim - sound familiar?

morphine ivp
I am an RN so I don't prescribe meds, but I have noticed that if it is really a kidney stone, Toradol works best.

Written up and confused.
Your supervisor is not in a position to threaten your license, that is a decision which can only be made by your state board of nursing. She is a bully. Your actions were quite correct and appropriate. I would make a formal complaint about her if it is possible to go higher up, additionally, most nursing homes/hospices (if that is where you work) have state bodies which oversee and govern them - you may consider making a complaint in this direction. Finally, threaten her with harassment via an attorney - well worth the couple of hundred dollars for a nicely written letter! Your license is your lively-hood, do not let anyone threaten it or take it away - no job is worth that. Good luck!

Start in Postpartum or L&D?
L&D! You already do the post-partum care in the recovery period following delivery. Try to take a course in Breastfeeding/Lactation Education to round up your skills. Good luck!

All Those NPs with No Bedside Experience
It would be nice if the nurse practitioners responding here were a little more polite and respectful whatever their opinions of 'nurses'. Ask any doctor, it doesn't pay to **** off the nurses, especially when you are covering the night shift!

All Those NPs with No Bedside Experience
I think Sanuk makes a good point here.

All Those NPs with No Bedside Experience
Regardless of the level of qualification, there are the good, the bad, and the plain ugly! This problem will escalate as I now meet new nursing grads who would rather work as a tech in the ER, than an RN in a skilled nursing facility. All have plans to go on to be nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists and so forth. I wonder if some of the blame for this sense of entitlement could be placed with the faculty and tutors in the nursing programs? Many of those who graduate with a BSN cannot even do the simplest of procedures such as IV's and catheter placement without obvious displays of anxiety. Like it or not, dexterity and observational skills are what makes a good nurse, be it an advanced practitioner or otherwise.

Tattoo cover up
Move to California - doesn't seem to be a problem here. The Dermablend is worthless, even for a cover up for evening dresses where it is not subjected to water or friction. The wristwatch idea sounds good, and you could always get one of those long sleeved sports shirts from an outdoor store which are supposed to wick away the sweat. Good luck.

BSN Equivalent
Excelsior College to an accredited online RN-MSN program. Good luck.

Fundus palping
Yes, we have computer charting which does both height and position. The charting is efficient but very time consuming!

Fundus palping
This is standard protocol for both midwives and labour and delivery nurses. Palpating the fundus also allows you to assess the bladder, which, if full, may precipitate excessive blood loss. A full bladder will cause the fundus to palpate higher than would normally be expected, and also may cause deviation to the right or left. Remember to check the patient's obstetric history also, as fibroids can give an erroneous reading.
