  1. S C A R Y. No way jose. Not my license.
  2. One more thing...you need giant brass cajones to be an L&D nurse some days. It takes time to grow them and get 'em big and heavy enough to smack docs around with, but patience, grasshopper....yours will grow.
  3. Ah yup. I pit gently. I don't care. I will totally blow off a doc breathing down my neck about upping the pit and have even said to them "BACK OFF, PIT MONSTER!!" :chuckle But I'm smart-mouthed like that. Pit gently, I say. I personally think that gently upping the pit gives a better, more effective labor pattern anyway. Stupid pitocin. I hate that stuff. Necessary evil, IMO.
  4. Tmiller, you're exactly right. :) I frequently find that those who are of the "that's not my job" mentality are usually the first to scream when there's "not enough help" yet the last to offer a helping hand to anyone else. Truly sad. Scope of practice issues aside, helping eachother, even with those "mundane" and "dirty" jobs, is what makes the difference between a nice place to work and a not-so-nice place to work, IMO.

  6. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you......

  8. Nice attitude. WHAT IF YOUR AIDE HAD 18 TOTAL CARE PATIENTS THAT SHE HAD TO DRESS, BATHE, AND MAKE BEDS FOR BY HERSELF BEFORE BREAKFAST??? It's "technically" the secretary's job to answer the phones on my unit, but I still soil my precious little hand and pick up that nasty phone and answer it. All without breaking a nail or letting my coffee get cold. A girl's gotta have priorities, you know....

  10. Yep. Me too. BTDT. I was an aide before I was a nurse, and I felt the same way. Used and abused. Overworked. Lazy nurses sipping coffee at the nurses' station, a zillion call lights going off, me running like a crazy person and sweating buckets, and them saying, "are you gonna get that (call bell)?" :angryfire

  12. No unions in SC. I hear you on your priorities changing. I was supposed to go back to work part time after my son was born, but couldn't bear the thought of putting him in daycare, so I am prn on the weekends only now. 2 weeks notice is all they deserve. Tell them to shove it. Like I always say, no one ever has engraved on their tombstone, "I wish I'd spent more time at work."
  13. Aw, how sad for that girl, Peg. I'm the same way, it's the rude and abusive ones I don't like. I find most drug users are not rude and abusive if you simply treat them with kindness.
  14. Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow. Long fingernails + cervical exam = patient torture. *shudder*
  15. Preach it, sister. Yowza. OUCH.
  16. Well if you want a great job with the mentally and physically challenged in NC, I can recommend a wonderful place. :)
  17. :angryfire :angryfire Omg, that girl is just a year older than me. That would make it around the year 1989-1990!!! What the #@!! ??? No offense to the older generation of nurses here, but those nurses sound straight out of the 50's, not the late 80's/early 90's!!!! That poor girl. I hope she rose above all of that.
  18. Omg, bless your heart. That makes me want to kick those nurses' collective orifices and give you a big hug. That makes me so angry. :angryfire
  19. Yep. As much as my mother grates me, I have told her that over my dead body will she go to LTC when/if she reaches that point. Uh uh. I'll go into debt and have a private duty RN 24/7 at her house or mine before I let her go to LTC. No way man.
  20. Oooooh yeah. BTDT. And after working a night shift from hades, too. Naturally, I'd been at a hospital that used PYXIS for the past 3 years, so I wasn't in the "narc key frame of mind" and went home with them. Aaaaaarrrrrggggggghhhh!!! I promptly grumbled to management and asked them when they were getting off their duffs and getting us PYXIS!!! Grrrrr.
  21. Omg, that about made me cry. God bless her.
  22. Aww, that's sweet mjlrn. The frail elderly terrify me. Seriously. I'm so afraid I'll hurt them just by touching them with that paper-thin skin. Yikes.
  23. Having an "oops" delivery at work is something I don't mind. But I DON'T want to be the one who is responsible for delivering all the time. Sorry. Uh uh. Too much legal brouhaha to worry about as it is, and I don't want to be a slave to the pager. No way man.
  24. In case you couldn't tell from the other thread, I have a real soft spot for teen moms. I have a dream of one day starting a home for unwed teen mothers and practicing as a CNM there doing prenatal care and education (NOT delivering the babies, though...). I'm a freak like that. :chuckle So what patient gets that big ol' soft spot in your heart every time?
  25. Exactly. Bravo! Give a young mother your time and patience, tell her she's doing a good job, give her the tools to parent her child...young mothers can be amazing. I agree, I have taken care of many older women who had NO business having kids. They thought of children as accessories, not actual people. You know, a cute little baby to dress up and show off, to be seen and not heard. Barf. And I have seen just as many young moms rise to the occasion so beautifully. They take that babe into their arms, and you can just see them change. Right there. It's truly amazing. :) It's not the addicts I have a hard time with, either, ironically. The kind of patient I cannot STAND is the kind of patient who is so self centered and selfish and prissy and just thinks the universe revolves around her, and her baby is merely an afterthought. One of those "think of children as accessories" patients. I just want to smack them and tell them "NEWSFLASH HONEY, IT AIN'T ABOUT YOU ANYMORE!!" Aaaaagggghhhh!! I have to do a lot of deep breathing with those women.
