Need Advice!
I am in the process of signing the contract for my next assignment, but I am having a few issues. Because Christmas and New Year's fall within the weeks of my contract I requested to know which one I would be required to work or take call. At first the agency told me it was too soon to have all that figured out, but once I got the contract and saw the contract mentions holiday work I asked for it be included into my contract. Then the agency said because I didn't discuss with the nurse manager during my interview what holiday I would be working they could not include it in my contract. So I told them I wasn't going to sign until it is figured out. I am just trying to make personal plans to be home for either Christmas or New Year's, plus I don't want it to not be discussed and then I have to work or take call for both, or don't get to go home. Well the agency has been calling the nurse manager since last Thursday and no response. So, today they gave me her telephone to call and see if I could get the information and still no response! I am starting to have bad feelings about the whole assignment! In my opinion there is nothing worse than a lack of communication. The other thing my contract fails to mention is mileage reimbursement, and the recruiter told me I would still get the reimbursement, but I am signing a short form contract because I am already traveling with the company so it does not need to be mentioned. Since I entered into a verbal contract at the time of the offer am I obligated to take the assignment regardless of the holiday work schedule or do I have the freedom to walk away until I actually sign the contract? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Annapolis, MD
I will be in the surgery department doing pre-op. Any basic information about the hospital or the area would be great, like weather, eateries, night life, and things to do.

Are you having a hard time finding travel jobs?
I am looking to get started as a travel nurse. I have been talking to four companies for a month now and I haven't received a bite on anything. I think my app has been submitted to about six places and still nothing. It's making me think twice about trying to become a travel nurse. Does your recruiter have you call the nurse manager to see if you can get an interview or do you just wait for them to call? One of the recruiters had me call and I left a message for the manager and she wants me to keep calling until I get her, but I feel uncomfortable doing that! Any input?

Bicitra
We only give Bicitra if a patient hasn't been NPO for at least 6 hours. So mainly when we get patients from the ER they have to have Bicitra. We do not give it with anything just straight up like a shot! Adding something does defeat the purpose of being NPO!

PCA's in PACU
We start all of our PCA's in PACU. Although today I have an order to start the PCA if the patient can't tolerate PO fluids or no pain control with Lortab. So if this patient needs the PCA they won't get it until they get on the floor.

Travel Nurse
Yes, I want to start traveling but I don't know which company to choose. I got a call back from American Mobile, but after reading all the negative experiences I'm not sure I want to proceed with this company. I just need the lowdown on the different travel companies. Anything will be useful! Thanks!

Having a hard time finding a new job!
I have been looking for a new position with 12 hour shifts for the last two months. My background is mainly in outpatient as a GI nurse for 4 years, and now I work in a doctor's office, and I have been here for about 9 months. I have applied for a variety of positions including case management, short stay units, med-surg, mother baby, and PCU. Out of all the interviews, I was offered a job in the PCU, which I declined for various reasons. Now I want to know if I have the skills to get a job in the PCU, how come I am having trouble getting another offer? Any ideas to help me find a new position?

Possible New Job
I have been working in a office setting for nine months now. When I was offered the job it was almost a $2 pay cut, and I just told the human resources manager that I couldn't afford the pay cut. They called me back the next day and agreed to match my current hourly rate. I guess it just depends how bad they need help. Try that and see if anything happens.

I need some help!
I was told that my orientation would be 3-4 weeks with the option to extend if needed. During the orientation I will have one shift in the ICU. At this hospital they don't use travelers so it is the regular staff that will float over into the ICU on a rotation schedule.

I need some help!
I have been offered a position on a med/telemetry unit and I am a little nervous about the position. When I applied for the job it was listed as a cardiovascular short stay unit doing CV procedures, but in actual reality it is an inpatient telemetry unit. I'm not so nervous about working on a telemetry unit, however I am nervous about having to float into the ICU. I don't know what it is about the ICU, but it really scares me as a nurse. If I do except the position, it only comes with four weeks of orientation, which I don't think is long enough. My background is in GI and Dermatology and Plastic Surgery. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to prepare mentally and physically for a critical care position! I have until Tuesday to make my decision about the job. I also considered following a nurse for one shift to make sure I really want to be on this unit. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! :uhoh21:

Jobs: What are the other options to bedside nursing?
Office nursing is always an option. I work for a dermatologist and plastic surgeon. Before this position I worked in a gastroenterology lab.
