Loss of first RN job Today I am so sad
I am sorry you are going through such a hard time. I know you will be stronger for having gone through this but it doesn't make it any easier. I am curious....did you receive positive evaluations before? Did you receive warning that you were on probation and that your job might be on the line? You might want to check with human resources regarding employee rights. You may not be able to stay in ICU but you could go to another unit. Just a thought...

Nursing shortage my !! (Bay Area)
I live in Michigan and the hospitals here also have a hiring freeze. I think there is a nursing shortage...but the hospitals are just trying to get by with the nurses they have due to the economy. Of course, this means the nurses who are working are probably being asked to do more with less help and no increase in pay. When I graduated in 1981 (wow!) I couldn't get a job in acute care due to a hiring freeze. I started my career in a psych hospital part time. After 6 months I was able to get a full time job in acute care. Hopefully, the economy will improve with new leadership (Obama) and things will turn around.

Nurses are Pathetic!!
This posting has really stimulated quite a bit of discussion and I think that is a good thing. The profession of nursing has many issues and some of them never seem to change. I wonder why that is? I read an article that 50% of all new RN's quit hospital nursing after 2 years. Many leave nursing altogether. Wow! Retaining all these nurses would be a big step in the right direction toward the nursing crisis. I think nurses would have alot more leverage if they weren't employees of the institution. We should be independents who contract either as a group (like physicians) or independently.

Interview tomorrow......
Interview went well but I am still on the fence about the position. I think the position was more like being on call so you really don't know what can happen in that 10 hour day. I am not sold on working every Sunday so we talked about a few other positions... Thanks for the feedback

Interview tomorrow......
I have an interview tomorrow for an RN Hospice Admission position. What should I ask? The position is for 2 10 hour days, Sunday and one week day. I was told that there wouldn't be more than two admissions. What would be a reasonable hourly wage.....? Would I be able to get all the paperwork done and two admissions in a 10 hour day? I used to do this but it has been a few years and I am not sure how much the paperwork has increased. Any advice is much appreciated.
