I am in school now waiting to get into a nursing program. Like you this is a second career for me. I was very touched by reading your post and felt compelled to write to you. My mother died of lung cancer a couple of years ago and like you I asked myself, " Why am I here", the answer came loud and clear one night while sitting beside my mother's bed...You were put here to be a nurse and care for others. I do believe it is important to know as much of the technical end of nursing as possible. I have gotten a 4.0 in all of my classes but even I understand that is not all that makes a good nurse great. When I hear people talk about a nurse that they had in the hospital, or other health care facility they hardly ever say, " She was really smart", " She knew all of the drug interactions", " She could rattle off all of the answers to technical questions". What I have heard from people is," She was so caring and warm", " She was so wonderful, she took the time to talk to me," " I felt like she really cared." By your description of yourself I would imagine that a lot of the patients you cared for said many of these wonderful things about you.. I do not have a crystal ball and I can not tell you waht to do but my advice would be to use the wonderful warm communicating way you have to your advantage. If I were you I would probably go into Hospice or Home Health Care where your strengths are appreciated. The nursing field is lucky to have you and I hope you find that special place that is perfect for you.

I am currently on a waiting list at Kellogg Community College for the part-time ADN program. I have been on the list for a year now. I suspect it is going to take another two years to get into the program and then another 2 1/2 years to finish. I have a 4.0 GPA so grades are not an issue. Does anyone know of a part-time program at any of the four-year universities in my area. I live close enough to Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Holland, Lansing, or Battle Creek to commute. Or maybe a community college that has a short waiting list or takes into account your grades. I have heard that Grand Valley State has a part-time program. I must go part-time Thank you for helping me with any information that you have.

Hello everyone, I am currently a student at a community college on the waiting list for an ADN program. I live in southwest Michigan. I am only able to attend school on a part-time basis. The school has been wonderful, however the program does not look at your grades when they determine entrance into the program. They only look at completion dates of your file. I am a 4.0 student and have worked very hard to do well. My questions to the intelligent people that are on this forum are the following: 1. Do you need a BSN to be competative in the world on nursing? 2. Are there any part-time programs in my area that actually consider your grades? 3. What is the most important thing I can be doing for my career at this point? 4. What should I do after next semester and all of the classes I am required to take are finished? I know have a one to two year wait for the program. Should I take a few classes at a four year school that would go towards my BSN or should I take more classes at my community college and actually end up with two associated degrees because of the waiting period. I am forty-two years old and very motivated to do well in this profession, however I need need advice on my career. I do well in school and have had my own business for over 20 years. I want to do this right......Please help me........
