Kansas City area anyone?
I don't live in the KC area. I live in a rural town in Kansas but my son lives in Overland Park and I love visiting him. There is so much to do in that area. And if you stay off of I- 435 at rush hour it isn't too hard to drive in also.

GBS treatment??
At my hospital we treat with ampicillin. The ped doctors like us to get 2 doses in the mom before she delivers. GBS is more of a problem for the infant than mom. We keep the babies for 48 hours after delivery to observe for symptoms. Also we do blood cultures and prophylactic antibiotics on the baby if the mom doesn't get 2 doses of antibiotics.

Do nurses get paid hourly or salary.
I get paid hourly. I work 12 hour shifts and get overtime after 80 hours in the 2 week payperiod.

er vs. ob the battle goes on sort of
That patient would have been admitted to our Med/Surg floor also. The last place a woman who has just delivered a stillborn wants to be is on a floor where she will be hearing new healthy babies crying and seeing happy new families. We admit all miscarriages and stillbirths women to med/surg floor.

er vs. ob the battle goes on sort of
wow! Any woman that walks thru our ER's door who is more than 20 weeks pregnant they don't even triage. Go straight to L&D, do not stop here.

Blocking beds when understaffed
Boy I wish my hospital would block beds when staffing is low. No they just tell us to suck it up and drive on!

Faking It
We had one who was fine when the doctor was examining him. Had a "seizure" in the hall outside the exam room which stopped when we put 2 large bore IV's in him and a cather. He responded real well to painful stimuli. Had all of us laughing at him.

IV Starts
I will try 2 times and then call anesthesia. I have never seen one of our docs attempt much less put in an IV but anesthesia will give it a try. I love scalp veins.

Call light systems...
Kristy that is the same that we use. SOme people refuse to wear the badge. They hate they can be tracked.
-
Call light systems...
We use a system by HillRom. YOu can talk to the patient over the handset.Saves lots of trips to the room when it was pushed accidently

Radiant warmers
We put nothing but a diaper on the babies we have under the warmers.

Nurses & Retirement $$$
That is not true. I can retire with full benefits when I am 56 and I plan on it.
-
phototherapy
Our babies getting phototherapy are always inpatients
-
Nurses & Retirement $$$
I must be an minority. I have worked for the same hospital for 20 years now. I plan on retiring in 10 years. Being that my hospital is a government hospital I have a good retirement plan but have savings taken out of my check. I have calculated that I will have a pretty good next egg in 10 years.

Taking Call
WOW Kansas I thought you were talking about the hospital I work at,also in kansas until you said you get $1 an hour to be on call.We get paid NOTHING but have to sit by a phone for 12 hours.ANd yes we have an union and they support this non-pay for being on call and it is MANDATORY to pull call one 12 hour shift a month. This is above and beyond the regular hours you work.THe nurses have fought this for 3 years now to no avail.

t-shirts for IVs
We have over the head long sleeve shirts which don't work well with IV's.You didn't hear this from me but I cut the sleeve off at the elbow to help fit over the armboard and such.
-
IV meds for Labor, what do you use?
I encourage an alternating dose of tylenol and motrin when they start to feel pain also. The docs usually have the foleys out in less then 12 hours with these ladies.I am so impressed with the duramorph and here I thought PCA's were it.We have even sent some ladies home at 16 hours post-op.they recovered so well
-
IV meds for Labor, what do you use?
we use stadol mostly. Our docs have started using epidural duramorph for their c-sections.Do any others use this and what are your thoughts on it? I like the outcome so far.The mothers are up and around so much quicker.

No charge nurse
A unit clerk making assignments??? Now that is something I would not go for at all!!!

Lunch breaks
I work 12 hour shifts. We are supposed to have a 30 min UNENCUMBERED break. We rarely get that. The other night I was working on the floor alone due to staff calling in sick.I asked the supervisor who was going to relieve me for my dinner break. She said she had no one to relieve me,why couldn't I eat at the nurse's station.I reminded her about the law and my union regs.I still got no relief but you better believe I filled out overtime papers for that time. We rarely get the breaks and our union does nothing to help us.

Is getting married in nursing school a bad idea?
Ok another party pooper.I got married in my 2nd year of nursing school. I WOULD NEVER DO IT AGAIN!! I would wait until after greaduation and getting a job. It was the roughest years. My grades slipped.I was stressed out trying to go to school, keep house and maintain a marriage.I have told my kids to wait until after graduation to get married. It is best all around.
