  1. I am! I have 3 kids, wife and a mortgage. Feeling a little nervous about starting school. Anyone else?
  2. Is the forgiven amount considered as taxable income?
  3. Any advice on which is better option? I know the obvious lower interest rate for private loan and no origination fee. But wondering if there is something else I might have missed. Also, does anybody know if the public service loan forgiveness applies only to plus loans and not private sector loans?
  4. Elkpark...may be I am not explaining it well. Here is a direct quote from http://financialplan.about.com/od/retirementplanning/a/401kloan.htm Double Taxation If you recall, your retirement plan contributions are made on a pre-tax basis. This means that you realize a tax break when making contributions to the plan, and you’re then taxed in the future when you take money out of the plan. Unfortunately, when you take a loan from your plan, you may be subjecting yourself to additional taxes. While regular 401(k) contributions are taken out of your paycheck on a pre-tax basis, the loan repayments are not. This means that you are taking pre-tax money out of your account and then repaying it with after-tax money. This can result in some of this money being taxed twice.
  5. I think you've answered your own question. "When you repay the loan, you are making the loan payments with money on which you've paid taxes (TAX #1), same as you would if you were repaying a loan you took out using your house or car as collateral. When you eventually withdraw money from the 401k in retirement, you pay taxes on the money (which is income on which you have not previously paid any taxes) at the time you withdraw it (TAX #2)" This is the reason why borrowing from 401k is bad! Better to roll it over to an IRA, then withdraw money to pay for tuition when you have zero income.
  6. Yes, the borrowed money is paid back with post tax income. Then you will have to pay taxes again on your 401k when you withdraw at retirement. Essentially you are taxed twice. It's probably better to roll over the 401k to an IRA; then using it to pay for tuition without paying 10% early withdrawal penalty. Of course you will be taxed, but you will be taxed at a lower rate since you have no other income as a student. I just want to know if anybody has done this..
  7. Just wondering what's the advantage of borrowing money from 401k and paying it back with money that has been taxed? Will you will be taxed again when you withdraw at retirement?
  8. Has anybody rolled over their 401k to an IRA to pay for school tuition?
  9. Yes, they are done with interviews. We'll know soon.
  10. I think it went ok. The group interview was a surprise. Anyhow, I'm just nervously waiting.
  11. AkinaRN congrats on the interview. If you search "kaiser crna interview" there are few threads talking about it. I'm also totally psyched, but nervous. Can't stop thinking about it. Anyhow, I'm interviewing on 2/13. How about you? Wish you the best.
  12. I know what you must feeling. I went through it last year. This is my second time applying. Just figure out what you can improve on and keep trying. You might have missed something pretty simple such as not attending the counseling session. Don't get discouraged by the number of applicants. They mentioned that they usually get 700-800 applicants, but almost half are incomplete applications. If this is what you want to do, then keep trying. i think they like it when you apply second time around and show improvements. They make it pretty simple to apply again. I think you just check off a box on the kaiser website. You don't have to resubmit transcript and such. As for me, on my second application, I polished up my resume, rewrote my personal statement, and made sure to stress my experience shadowing a CRNA. The last is SO important. Anyway, hope this helps. I'll be happy to talk to you about your application. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck everyone and wish me luck on the interview.
  13. I got an invite for interview too!!! I set my expectation pretty low this year. I was not expecting this. Not sure if should be happy. I feel more nervous now!
  14. Congrats! Wish you the best on the interview!
  15. Sorry to hear about the confusion. Kaiser sends out the invites for interview. CSUF has little involvement in this. Did you watch the video and attend the counseling session with kaiser? Then, you should be ok. Just wait until tomorrow.
  16. By the way, no email for me today. I guess I'll be checking my email all day tomorrow.
  17. I just spoke to kaiser. They said they just started to send out the invites today and the rest tomorrow. Good luck everyone!
  18. . Hahahaha. I know what you mean. If anyone calls please update ASAP. Hahahaha
  19. Luckyme: send an email to ******** CSUF. She will let you know if everything is in. As far as the interview, you have to call ***** to find out if all the interviews have been decided. She will let you know if you did or didn't get it. Who wants to call her tomorrow and kill the suspense? I might call her tomorrow.
  20. There is a thread from last year with the same questions people are asking on this thread. One person got an invite via email on 1/5. Some got rejection email sent a week after. Others didn't get anything until they had to call the office to find out. I wasn't too optimistic about kaiser. I just gave it a shot since it cost nothing to apply. I'm hoping to get into USC.
  21. I have also applied for fall 2013, but I'm feeling doubtful. I got my self address envelope from CSUF in mid December. It indicated my application was complete. As far as the interview invitation, I have not received one yet. I'm feeling doubtful since last year it was sent out via email on 1/5. A week after everyone got a rejection email. By the way the invite is through email so check your spam folder too. Good luck everyone
  22. Who has applied? Any news?
  23. I really enjoyed the accelerated MSMC BSN program. I was done in 12 months, got a scholarship which paid for more than half of my tuition and a guarantee job after graduation. However, I would think twice about going to this program if there were not scholarships. $45K is a lot of money to pay back. CSULB BSN/MSN progarm is cheaper, but much longer time commitment and may be also rushing into a MS degree which you're not prepared for. It would be a waste of time to do the MS CNS portion if you're not really interested in becoming a CNS. Would they allow you to do the BSN portion and not finish the MSN? If yes, then I would go with the Long Beach program...it's cheaper, closer to home and an option to go back to school if you choose to. Hope this helps...
