DHMC/Cheshire Medical Center Keene
Hi, They seem to work pretty slow over there in HR. But I was told that they were going to be making their decisions for the New Grad program by April 23rd. I was offered a position that week, along with two of my classmates. What unit were you interviewing for? Apparently the number of open positions for new grads this year at CMC/DH-K is less than half of what they had last year. This is the same with the other hospitals in the area, and it's been hard for new grads to find positions. I really hope that something good works out for you. Good luck!

6 months as a new grad-my 2 cents.
Thank you for your post. I am about to graduate in a few weeks and have accepted my ideal job, but I have been plagued with doubts and jitters about my ability to handle it. I am glad to hear that it does get better. If you have any more updates or tidbits about your transition from new grad to a more experienced nurse, I would appreciate hearing about it!

What does overhire mean?
Thank you very much for your reply. This clears up the question of overhiring as far as new grad nurses are concerned which, I agree, makes complete sense. I will also ask about this in my interviews. Thanks again.

What does overhire mean?
OK, thanks. Could that affect me if I was hired on a floor where they had more than enough staff? For example, could they cut my hours back after orientation?

What does overhire mean?
Hello all, I am interviewing for New Graduate Nurse positions and am wondering what this term "overhire" means. I appreciate any input. Thanks!

another IV question...
Okay, thanks. That does make sense. In theory we weren't taught to do it this way, so I need to talk to my instructor to see if we are supposed to always do it this way. Thanks for your responses.

another IV question...
Hello everyone, I am a student and the other day I got to hang my first IV meds. I have a question that might sound silly but I really hope someone will answer it. One patient did not have any fluids ordered. There was a new antibiotic to be hung, so my instructor had me piggyback it into a line connected to normal saline that was hanging there that had been d/c'd at some point earlier. So my question is, why did we do that instead of letting it run as a main line?

Vermont Technical College
I go to the Brattleboro campus, we go to Brattleboro Hospital the first year and then I think the second year we go to other facilities for clinicals, maybe Dartmouth? I don't know anything about the Bennington campus, only that the curriculum is the same at any VTC campus. If you want to know anything in particular, just ask and I'll try to answer. Where are you relocating from? Edited to add: I have a few classmates who moved to Brattleboro after they were denied at other locations. We seem to have more space than other VTC programs. They told us at orientation that the minimum GPA for some campuses is 3.8, just FYI, but you'll probably be able to get in wherever you choose.

Vermont Technical College
Hello. This is a belated reply to your questions about Vermont Tech... if you happen to catch this post and want to ask me anything in particular, feel free. In general the VTC nursing programs are very good. Brattleboro campus has a 100% NCLEX pass rate almost every year. Some campuses are harder than others to get into, due to space. That goes for both the LPN and ADN programs. Let me know if you want to know anything else.

Wondering about IHS...
Hello everyone. It's been awhile since the last post here but I thought I'd give it a try. I am about to begin my nursing degree program, and I think a lot about how I am going to best be able to serve the Indian community as a nurse. Working for IHS is appealing to me because of their loan forgiveness program. So I was wondering if anyone out there has experience with either this program or working for IHS in general. By the way, I am an enrolled member of a tribe, and I was raised on our tribal nation lands in Oklahoma until I went away for high school. Growing up I saw first hand the inequalities that exist for Native Americans, especially in health care. While this fact used to just infuriate me, it also motivated me to find a way to do something about it and I think I am finally approaching a place where I can be a source of positivity.

How Did you Know?
Hi Nathan, Here's my story. I graduated a few years ago with a BS in Biology, I always focused my studies on the human body, why things go right or wrong depending on what we eat, what we are exposed to, what we do, and how we think about ourselves and our communities. Took a few years off to raise my son, now I am entering nursing school because this is the way I feel I can directly affect the health of people, hopefully in a positive way. I definately plan on going on to be a NP. The book "What Should I Do With My Life" is a fun read, it has many many stories in it by people at the point in their lives that I think you are at now. Maybe it can offer you some valuable experiences and perspectives. Best wishes.

HCA- Parkland or Portsmouth Hospitals...
Hello. I am a nursing student and am considering taking a scholarship through HCA, which means that I would have to commit to working at one of their facilities, two of which are in NH: Parkland Medical Center or Portsmouth Hospital. So I am curious, is anyone familiar with the HCAid Scholarship? Or is anyone employed at either of these facilities and care to offer any perspectives/advice/information/anything at all?
