I have a 15 yr old nephew that is in football at his high school and you know how 15 yr old guys are, football is their life. Anyways, he came over to the house today and I noticed that he and his friends had shirts, braclets, necklaces, etc that said DNR... That's it DNR is all it said. I aked him what it ment and he said it ment defense never rests.. Now being in a mindset of nursing...we all know what we think of when we see DNR.. Dont you think this is dangerous for the young kids to wear? If something happend to one of them and they stopped breathing and someone saw a braclet on them that said DNR that medical person might not perform CPR!! Just a concern I had, what do yall think about this.. Is it dangerous? Should I be concerned or am I over reacting?
  5. Yes my instructor is very supportive and I completely understand what you mean about the unresponsiveness, I felt the EXACT same way... I'll be glad to get the skills down without distraction and then throw the rest of the puzzle in later.. :)
  6. Thank so much! You'll have a great time I'm sure. I think its all what you take out of your experience. Congrats!!!
  7. HI everyone! I just wanted to share my thoughts and experience so far with everyone. I am a level two LVN nursing student. I attend a part-time evening program that is 18 months long. We do classes on tuesday and thursday nights from 6p to 10p and we do our clinicals everyother weekend, 12 hr shifts. Right now our clincals are in LTC. I love my program and I am learning so much. I am getting very excited about becoming a nurse. We just started our clincals, I have done four 12 hr shifts. Our instructor lets us pick our pt that we will have for two weekends and we do all our research on that one pt and become familiar with their meds and medical Dx and stuff b/c of course, we will be taking on that pt for the time we are there. (eventually we will take on two pt's) My first pt that I chose was a very very nice eldrely gentlman who was fairly easy and just needed some assistance with getting dressed and stuff, nothing major. It was comforting to me to take on a simple task for my first pt so that I was confortable and got familiar with the process of what we would be doing. We wrote a care plan for our pt and everything. It was great! Anyways, my pt decided he wanted to go and tell my instructor how much he liked me and how good I was to him, which I did appreciate. So when I went to pick my new pt for next weekend my instructor came to me and challenged me to pick someone that would be a little more difficult that I could learn from b/c she thought I was ready to handle it. I was nervous at first but took on the challenge. My next pt is bedridden and unresponsive. She has a G-Tube with continous feedings. So needless to say, I am going to be responsible for her G-tube care and feedings and her oral care, turning her q 2hrs, incontinent care, and wound care on her pressure ulcer, and all that stuff that comes along with a completely dependent pt. I will also be doing my first head to toe assessment on a real pt on her. I am excited about it but a little nervous but my instructor assured me that she would guide me through and that I could handle it. She said that she was proud of me for taking on the challenge and that I would learn alot. She wants me to learn as much as I can before I get to my clinicals at the hospital so I am not lost there b/c she said that the pase is much much faster and more hectic. So i just wanted to share my first experinces with yall b/c no one in my family is in nursing or understands the excitement of going through nursing school so I thought I would turn to yall, who im sure can relate 100%. I am open to anyone's advice and encouragement. Wish me luck as I prepare myself to take on this challenge next weekend. Sorry this is so long and kinda pointless but I was excited, thanks for listnening!!!
  8. We just had a girl fail out and the whole class was devastated. She was our class motivator and cheerleader, always leading us on and telling us we can do it! It was heartbreaking.... We have to pass with an 80%, 70-79 in our school is not passing anything, not even a test!!! It's tough sometimes.
  9. I started LVN school in October. I just started level two and last weekend was our first weekend in clincals. It went very well and I am so excited. Level one (our first semester) was foundations of nursing which included anatomy and physiology, nutrition, child growth and development etc.. Then we had our skills lab that taught us how to do all of our skills for nursing. Now in level two, we have clinicals and we are in Pharamcology now. We had our first test today and I made a 90....woo hoo... Anyways, in level two we also have geriatrics and mental health.. Then, in July we move to level Three and then level four. I will graduate in April 2007 and I am counting down.. My program is an 18 month evening program and it allows me to stay at home with my daughter during the day and just focus on school and my husband is with her at night. It has been a blessing and so far so good. I love school and nursing is GREAT!!!
  10. Thanks everyone... I had my first clincal experience this weekend and I had a great time. I loved it and I am so looking forward to learning more and more and more.. I cant wait, I am so anxious to see the road ahead, lol... It was a little hard though b/c it hurt to see some of the patients suffering and most of the CNA's and aides there were "hardened" to it.. I interacted with so many patients and just sat and listened to some of them. I was thanked so many times for being there "just to listen"... The elderly are so sweet and innocent.. I love nursing!!!
  11. Oh my gosh, your denture story is funny!! Thanks for your advice.. Your much appreciated..
  12. OK, Thanks so much for responding!
  13. hi i am a lvn student in my second semester and we are starting our clinicals this weekend and a ltc facility. i was just looking for other lpn's advice. i am a little nervous about it and not really sure what to expect :uhoh21: i know that our first day of clinicals will be "orientation" but i was wondering if anyone else who has done there clinical rounds at the ltc facility could tell me what all you learn at the ltc facilities and give me any advice you picked up along the way or have any stories you would like to share with me from that experience in your schooling.. thanks so much
