  1. I was in the same situation as you a few years ago moving from a small town in Kansas to southern California. I was so scared but knew the change had to be made. I was suprised to find that women have babies in California the same way they do in Kansas! What I realized about myself is I knew more than I realized. You're going to learn and grow so much and will be feel so proud of yourself in the end. Do not be afraid to ask questions!! By the way.....I NEVER in a million years would've thought I'd be a charge nurse in this busy unit by now, but here I am!!

I will often ask the pt if she wants me to direct her with her pushing or just work with what her body is doing. Most primips will ask to be guided.
  3. Good to know. I work in L&D and don't get too far into recovery to notice the difference of fent. babies vs non medicated babies. Is there the same effect with other meds. ie:stadol?
  4. The IV med of choice at my facility is fentanyl. Only 1 doc uses stadol. 50 q 5 min prn- up to 150/hr. Usually 2 doses in a 5 min interval does the trick for heavy labor. Same effects as stadol as far as variability goes. We don't give it to multips who are 8 cm or farther.
  5. Be patient with yourself. Do these nurses not realize that you're going to be a part of their team? You would think they would want to teach you the best they could. Labor & Delivery is challenging enough let alone being a brand new nurse. Sounds like your hosp. needs a more organized orientation program. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  6. This really makes me laugh- when you're applying external monitors and someone asks "now will we be able to hear the baby cry through this?":lol2:
