University of Victoria (UVic) Nurse Practitioner Masters Program - Fall 2025
Hi guys, I got accepted this year after being waitlisted last year at UVic and rejected everywhere else. I have 11 years nursing experience, critical care advanced nursing certificate, certified practice in contraceptive management, picc clinician... and I got rejected hardcore last year. I asked every school for feedback and the only one who did was UVic, so UVic was the only place I applied again this year. I was so bitter. They (UVic) told me (when I was waitlisted) that I had a competitive GPA, strong references, strong work experience, and a strong admissions essay. They had MINIMAL constructive feedback for me as to how I could be more competitive next time (ie this year) except they did tell me: -Shadow an NP and write about it in your admissions essay -Explain the role of the NP more clearly AND THAT IS IT. I was absolutely devastated last year because I happened to know some of the nurses who made it in and I did not understand what they had that I did not. Things that I did in addition that I was able to highlight in the "reapplication letter" that they ask you to do if you've applied before- I took a couple of continuing education courses through coursera and UBC CPD to beef up my cultural awareness, and I went to NNPBC conferences with my partner (an NP) anytime I had the chance/guests were invited. It seems to be a crapshoot. I am grateful that I got in this year... but I do believe it was luck. Unpopular opinion, I am sure. Make sure to ask them for feedback on what you could have done to be more competitive.

Not great news, guys. It might still be a while. "Hi Jodi, Thanks for checking in. The MN NP and NP Post-Degree applications are currently under review by the faculty committee. We expect decisions to be updated in the system online by late March or early April. Admission offers and refusals are updated in the system online first, followed by an email afterwards. Waitlist offers are sent via email but don't show in the system." So there's that. I can stop obsessively checking. It won't be this weekend, it seems.

I'm also dying with the wait. I did some research though on last years admissions decision timeline: on March 18th (it was a Monday), the first-round admitted people had an update on the portal that read "Recommended by Department" under their status. I was waitlisted (but didn't know it yet) and mine remained saying "Under review by Department" the entire Summer. I got an email a week later saying I had been waitlisted. So I expect we will hear some update next Monday the 17th if they keep to the same timeline. That's just my sleuthing though relying solely on last years data! I'm clearly dying too.

Hey! I applied last year too (TRU, UNBC and UVic) and was waitlisted to UVic, but didn't end up making it in - ugh. Applied only to UVic this year because I was so irritated with UNBC's application and how harsh they seemed with the rejection letter. Ha! Maybe I was a bit sensitive at the time but whatever. UVic only for me this year! Fingers crossed for us!

I was JUST about to cave and send UVic another email. This post gave me the strength to stop myself! Haha. I don't want to be crazy but I definitely am crazy. Sending you patient vibes. I've been having to ACTIVELY DISTRACT myself. I'm WAY far down the UVic waitlist so it's likely not going to happen for me, but I stand in solidarity with you about the AGONIZING wait!

Congratulations to all of you who got in to both schools! What an accomplishment. My first choice would have been UNBC; their program is more NP-focused as opposed to Master's focused, if that makes sense. My partner is in her final semester in the NP Program at UVic and the first year was full of the classic philosophy classes that drove her nuts. Still a great program though, but UNBC seems a bit better on that one in need-to-know information. I obviously weighed in with the "part-time" ness of UNBC... but it just makes it so you can work during the program. Which for me would be an absolute bonus. Wish I was given an option but I am rooting for all of you!

@ERNurseHailey I understand completely about being gutted. I was flat out rejected by UNBC and TRU and fully expected a rejection from UVIC after your update. My status has not changed on the portal at all: it's still "Under Review". I'm also not out of the woods yet. The only hope is that my partner got in to UVic after being 17th on the waitlist.... she got in 4 days AFTER class started. So this breath-holding continues for me. Has anyone else received notice of being waitlisted with UVic?
