Patient to nurse ratio NY in LTC
Hi everyone,I would be asking for your experience/s & words of wisdom. I work in a LTC/rehab facility specifically in a young long term unit where residents follow you every couple of hours for their pain meds (you have to allot at least 30 mins doing narcotic count, that is if you'r a fast counter;just to give you an idea on the amt of narcotic we have). Last month we were changed toa 12hr shift however when the schedule was released most of us had a 16 hrs shift schedule (we were never informed prior to the release of sched w/c was a day before the start of the month). We followed our superiors & did our part & went on duty. Then this month they stopped the 16 hrs shift but removed 1 nurse on each unit & implemented a 1nurse:40 residents ratio, also since this sched was started almost all the nurses has had suspensions averaging 10 days for all reasons you can think of (including calling in sick) one of our nurse even had an indefenite suspension(she is now having htn bec of the hse bills yet no definete answer as to when she will be back to work). This is my question what is the usual nurse;patient ratio in this kind of facilities? What are the legal grounds for suspension (btw, our facility has no policy on this neither did they give any employee any info abt this). The admin said that the owners are cutting back on the budget that's why they had to do this kind of staffing, even the staff coordinator is going crazy over this staffing. We have a nurse that works in 2 units w/c is sched to work 4 hrs on 1 unit & 4 hrs on the other unit to "help out",they only have 27 hrs/wk (our contract stipulates 35hrs/wk of work). Since we are foreign nurses we are not well versed to laws or "rights" of nurses,we placed our trust in the agency that hired us w/c was when spoken to said "ow,w/ regards to suspensions we are hands off!" Thanks a lot for advocating for us,right?!! Hay....this is probably why those 27 nurses walked out on that other facility.any advice/word of wisdom will be much appreciated as we are at a lost on what to do. Thanks in advance.

Need your advice,please....
I'm a foreign graduate nurse and has been working in a rehab unit of a LTC center. This is my dilemma, from d time i started in the facility all i wanted is to do patient care esp treatment that's why i was glad to be in the rehab unit, however i was "transferred" to be d unit manager.I've been saying no until such time i didn't have an alibi anymore.I've been a UM for 6 months now and i am unhappy,I feel frustrated bec i am unable to finish my things to do since i'm doing charge, appt, family querries, wound rounds, care plans PPD/Flu/Pneumovax audit of all 40 residents,CNA complains among other things,i feel i'm endangering residents coz i'm unable to finish my "stuff".Thinking of going to work makes my back ache.I've been working at least 10 hrs a day just to be able to cope up w/the things d admin wants me to do and a day is just not enough.I go home only to sleep, last week i realized i only ate 2 meals d whole week,d worst part is i've forgotten that on my husband's bday i had a plan & asked for a vacation time w/c apparently was disregarded (i was in the sched even if d VL was granted).I submitted a resignation letter to my DON but i'm not sure if they'll grant it to me.Is there any legal implications if they said No & yet i refused to be UM anymore.I just don't feel i'm effective plus its affecting my relationship,my health and most imptly my residents.pls advice,i don't know what to say to my DON. . .

Thanks in advance for your response.

How long the evaluation for RN (NY State) take?
Hi! I am also going to NY and had a situation with my TOR (credentials verification). It took me 7 long months to go, follow up, e-mail, mail thru fedex in my school and the CGFNS. According to CGFNS they mailed the verification form but according to the scholl they did not receive any. The good news is that after 7 months, my school finally was able to receive and send back the "verification form" to CG. I already have my visa and will be flying to NY next month. However i will also be waiting for the NY verification so that i can get my limited permit. I also have friends who have the same experience. I just hope that we will all get our Verifications approved ii time.
