Can you sue your instructor?
Actually being hit by an instrucor would be assault, but your right some instructors are just not too nice and my instructor actually said to the class to the people who did not do well on their FON final (nobody failed, thank god I was in the high 80's) as we were going through the Q&A on some of the answers she would say "if you got this wrong then you are not deserving to be in this program" I wanted to get up and smack her into next week, even tho I did well, the other students who did not were extremely upset:devil:

Can you sue your instructor?
I totally agree with you, about the lawsuits, if you read my post on this subject, you will see that I also fought to get back in, then I thought if I get back in, what kind of learning experience is it going to be with that teacher. I took a pass on fighting with this one and am waiting for another school registration in fall 2008, It is worth it to me to go into another program then to be back in that program with that teacher, what makes me crazy about it tho is that all through the first semester they etch into your brain, do not judge people, keep your opinions to yourself, validate everyones feelings etc. Some instructors just do not practice what they preach! Who wants to learn from some one like that! As far as the instructor smacking that student, that person would be weraing cement shoes at the bottom of the ocean lol

Wow! I hope this was not aimed in my direction, that's rough! Good for you and your excellent grades, and thank God your babies are ok! But WOW

Can you sue your instructor?
We had an instructor slap a student twice in front of a pt and another student. The student threatened that if she was failed, she would press charges and sue her. We are still waiting the verdict! Ya, you can sue your instructor but you have to have strong evidence & grounds. __________________ Is the instructor still among us, or is she sleeping with the fishes!

Can you sue your instructor?
Hello, I just need to add something to these posts I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way, I to was recently asked to leave a program due to my math grades, problem is I have ADHD and dyslexia, and was told I could not retake the tests from the beginning, the funny thing is I was able to figure out Drip rates, etc. but the first 2 tests did me in, no way to make up when there were only 8 tests on this math before moving the pharm, I appealed and decision was upheld, of course I was angry and I have to tell you, suing was the last thing on my mind, won't tell you what is first on this list. I believe that the instructors during the course can see the students who will excel in the program and those that will struggle. Even though I passed A&P and FON with a high end B, I am still out. My evaluations from clinicals were excellent, so I realized that maybe I do not belong in this field, (if you believe in signs). I also put my life on hold, not mention the financial situation I put my husband through, I have searched and spoken with other schools and instructors and sometimes the program you are in, you just do not fit in. It is refreshing when you talk to other schools to see an intelligent, warm instructors vs. mine who was cold as ice! Good luck to you, I am still debating on whether or not to continue my nursing career but it is nice to know that there are other programs where you might fit in.

Perhaps if you were any kind of a nurse you would have read all the details of this post and see where my other concerns lie, it is not just the math, I realize I need to learn all of that. Is this what you do with your pt.s just pick out the symptoms you want to hear and dismiss the rest. Put your glasses on and read the rest before you 2 cents is issued. Other wise not interested SIMON

I find that really insulting, to be honest my plan was to work in a physicians office where iv's are not really needed. I am only asking for a chance to proves myself to this instructor. You sound like you have no care or concern for the Pt., maybe its time you get a new career, I have met your kind "old school", I only hope your children or grandchildren or anyone close to you ever is ever in this position, perhaps if they were you would sing a different tune. How funny with the idol dig, I guess you are the Simon of this thread.

I did contact the exceptional nurses and received an answer ver yquickly, we chatted via email for a while and she asked me if this was worth the fight for me, which I replied YES!! she then emailed the teacher and superintendent of the school asking what accomodations are available for students with learning disabilities, as she sees no mention of them on their web page. Tomorrow my husband and I are going to the school to speak the the superintendent face to face, and see what he plans to do about this situation. I am so nervous!!! Which is why my husband is coming, and I am bringing a tape recorder as suggested to me, Thanks for all your help, will let you know the results!!! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!

unfortunately it is too late to buy any books for resources, I have a shelf full of them, I am out of the program for now, but really want to get back in. I am going to check out the web sites that Here comes trouble has given but I hope you are still on trouble, I am just curious as to what these organizations did to help you, and was it during your education or work? I am actually browng through the web site, "Wild mountain child" what kind of attorney should I get, they are very hard to get in to see, I do not care about the cost of it, I have sacrificed alot this year to get through this, I sold my car and even went bankrupt so at this point i stand to lose nothing!

I agree I do need to fully understand the math, I have been doing so much extra worksheets which I was told I could use for extra credit however she said no, remember also that the pharmacology course you can use calculators so that would have been my time to really get a chance to work those out and find out what I am missing. As far as the comments and lack of teaching during the clinicals I have those all documented and you are right since the principal who is her boss did not call me back my husband and I are going to the school monday morning, all I know is that I feel that the favoritism was awful, he would poll the students who felt the same way he would see, she did change policy as I stated above for the guy who did not show up for a week did not call and just showed up at our first day of a new clinical, according to him, he was depressed and thats why he was not there. The policy for attendance states you can only miss a certain amount of hours anything over 28 in a month needs to be made up in 1 month, that has not been done according to my conversation with him he only made up 2 hours, and that was the end of november, these are just some of the things that really get to me, this instructor is convinced that he will pass the boards, so she lets that go, there are a few others who have abused their time, nothing sadi due to her obsession of getting an 82% pass rate on the boards, if a student took the boards and failed the first time, that did not count, last year the class did not make it, mind you also this is really her first time running this program for a full year, she took it over last Jan. She does not think certain people will pass in her mind she has the percentage of who will, if they do not get that pass rate they have to have remedial help, before they can qualify for it

Thanks for your answer however the boards are all multipl choice and computerized and you may bring a calculator with you, so I guess some things have changed, I am not asking for my grade to be changed I am just asking to prove myself with Pharmacology, the math is only worth 10% of your pharm. grade and i am very good at pharm, I am familuar with alot of meds and the IV's are pretty much easy to do now, you do not need to do that kind of math, I spoke at length with an RN at the hospital I was doing my rotation at, I am just asking for a chance to prove that I can pass this class, thanks again

Need Help Quickly!
Could somebody please help me, I have a real sticky situation. I have been asked to leave the LPN program I am in on Thursday due to the fact my math grade were not up to par, these were drop rates and ratios and proportions and things like that. My problem is that I have ADHD and the instructors are aware of this and I have tried really hard, I saw a tutor who found alot of anwers she mark wrong that were not, and we still had time until the end. I asked her if I could just write the formulas out on an index card so I could have them to refer to, since we could not use claculators yet. she said no, I offered to continue to work on them for extra credit and got a NO. The biggest problem was that we were just getting ready to get into pharmacology which I am very familar with, where we would be able to use calculators. She just would not let me try to prove myself in pharm. The actual math course had not ended yet, but if they were multiple choice questions then I would have done better. There were ones she marked wrong that looked like a decimal or my 3 looked like a 5. During our clonical rotations at the hospital this instructor would never even come to see me, all the info I learned such as assessments besides what was taught in class I had to downloard forms from this page (this page is great) and pretty much teach myself. Her last words to me were she could not arbitrarily change policy around for me which she has done for a student who just did not come in for a week and did not call in and just show up after losing 35 hours in the first week of Jan. the policy for that is a majority of the hours need to be made up in 1 month and at this time it still is not done. I apologize for the length of this post but I am so upset It has always been my dream to be a nurse, I am so upset because of this mistreatment, apparently if this course has an 82 percent pass rate on the boards the first try thet get a 10,000 grant, they did not get it last year, so she is trying to "weed out the people" she probably does not think can pass the boards. Just to let you I have a B in my FON and A&P, cna someone please advise the way to handle this, I tried to call the administrator of the school and he did not call me back nor did he call my counseler at the rehab center who paid for my tuition. Can not go down without a fight! Someone please help!

IV Calculations
Thanks for all your responses, I guess I better start practicing, as you can see math is not one of my strong points and I really need to get it straight. Thanks!

IV Calculations
Thanks, I have become very good at ignoring the other numbers, they try to trick you on these types of questions, I am finding that in my Foundations of Nursing course also. Having kids, I think ignoring things comes like breathing to me! thanks for your help I will try to work these out!

IV Calculations
Am I dividing the volume the 1,000 into the 50/ml to get the first answer?

IV Calculations
:uhoh21: Hello, I am a current nursing student and I am having a problem with a specific calculation question: there are 2 different types of calculations, the first 1 is: A unit of packed cells (250ml) to infuse in 4 hour. Drop Factor 20gtt/ml. These I can get, the answer I got was 20.8-21/gtt/min. This one is difficult for me due to the fact I can not figure the equation: 1 Liter (1,000ml) of D5 o.45% NS at 50ml/hr, Drop Factor 60gtt/ml. UGH! Can someone help me with the steps on how to figure this out and if possible give me the answer so I can refer to it! Thanks for all your help, I love this webpage! It has been extremely helpful!!!

what the heck are medical assistant schools doing !
If I were you, I would go directly to nursing school, it sounds to me that you prefer to work in a hospital setting and they usually do not hire MA's as I have said previously I am glad I went through my MA course and sat for the board to become certified, I was able to work in a private practice for a few years, however now that I am in an LPN class, none of the that schooling matters, you have to start at the beginning, so if you truly want to be an RN/LPN, I think you should just start right at the beginning. The fact that you know you want to be a nurse is different than when I went to MA school I was not sure. Good Luck!! You will love it!

LPN Tuition-how much did you pay?
Holly27, so sorry I see I scrolled past your last post, you are taking the 11-12 month course as well. How are you handling the 2 day clinical and 3 day class with 3 tests a week? When I first started checking in to the school I originally wanted the 2 year evening program but they did not have enough students to have a class. Apparently this is the 2nd year in a row

LPN Tuition-how much did you pay?
Hello, just thought I would chime in on this issue, my tuition for a local vocational school was 4,000, the 1st semester books cost 300.00 and then the background check and uniforms (UGH!,UGLY) It will be worth it, but what I find interesting in reading this thread is that some are 2 year and mine is a 12 month full time start Sept anf end in August, is anyone else doing this particular schedule? If so how are you coping, I am finding it tough, but doing ok.

what the heck are medical assistant schools doing !
Obviously CardianRN, you failed to completely read mine, I again state, I never called myself a nurse nor did I ever act like one. In the medical field I was trained in, The doctors were the ones to diagnose and treat, in my follow up calls if there were any more s/s or little improvement I would go to the Doctor immediately and follow their instructions. I was not aware that RN could diagnose and treat, thats pressure I do not need. I look forward to working under an RN when I pass my NCLEX, I hope that she is nice and able to train me properly. I certainly hope she does not diagnose or try to dictate meds to the Dr. I will ask for another RN if I find that. I think that this is the end of the discussion now! As far as the difference in LPN and RN, I am aware of the difference in the "scope of practice" between RN and LPN, but I also would like to let Tazzi know, I agree about the ads, they are deceiving, and I think they basically take someone who was thinking about a nursing degree and decide to take the MA and then they are stuck!

Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?
Thanks for your response MarieLPN, I did mention to my instructor that I did not want to be her partner anymore, we do our documentation so differently that she told me in front of the instructor I was doing it wrong. So if you can help me, (in case I was wrong but just being stubborn), during the head to toe physical assessment, I took vitals first, pulse. respirations, temp, eyes, ears and oral. I then started the Auscultation, where I counted apical pulse. When documenting I always put vitals first, however under the physical assessment, thats where I put apical pulse, lung sounds, bowel sounds etc. Well she disagreed with me and said apical pulse should go under vitals, not ausultation. Was I wrong? We really have not gotten to documentation first, so I could be wrong! Hope not! As far as belching in class, the previous reply, I would tell that person that it is disgusting and disrespectful to the class.!!!!

Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?
My biggest pet peeve: Oh where to start, when the class first started in September, we were told by the instructors that it did not matter what kind of medical background or job we had in medical field, that there were people in the class that had none so we were to all start at the same level, no one higher! Guess its hard to keep that philosphy, there are 3 students in my class who know everything! I wonder why they just do no go straight to medical school. When I ask an instructor a question, one of the 3 will try to answer it for me. IT DRIVES ME CRAZY! Of course my first day of clinical at a nursing home I got one of them as my partner! UGH! She strong armed me out of anything I tried to do! Took credit for any issues or concerns I had for this pt, I would mention it and she would run to the instructor and tell her! I have to say if I could just gag them!!!! Any suggestions?
