Anyone have any updates?

Originally, we were told there were not going to be any breaks, but then we ended up having some breaks. We went to Atlanta the Saturday after Thanksgiving and were there for able two weeks. They told everyone during orientation that they didn't know where they were going to place us. Most of us didn't find out whether or not we had placements until a week before we started clinicals. There are others who never got placements and are now trying to make sure they get hours to graduate on time. One of my classmates is now having to fly back to Atlanta every weekend for three weekends in a row while also having class three days a week. Then has to go for a full three weeks to finish her hours in time.

The education is what you make of it, as it is with all other distance-based nursing programs. It is a reversed classroom so you watch the lecture before and come to class ready to discuss and ask questions. The problem is the clinical and the administration of the program. There is a lack of communication and they won't even give you access to your own hours. They use a "formula" to figure out how they are going to calculate the virtual hours and they are not transparent about what that is and what hours we have completed. They also have changed requirements and expectations for graduation while we were in the program without warning.

I would run from Emory if I were you. Count your blessings and consider the other schools you were accepted into. The cost of Emory for a BSN is absurd and NOT worth it.

For virtual hours we did simulations through shadow health or spent time discussing in class video case studies. I will try to compile a list at some point. Emory is a great school. This program is not. It's a new program so things are constantly changing and they are not transparent with their students.

I am in the DABSN program and started in August 2020. We started clinical in January, only two students had placements and the rest of us had to go back to Atlanta between Feb and March to do clinicals. The next semester was mental health OR maternity (you do not get both) I would say 90% of our group had virtual simulations, so unfortunately they are blatantly lying to you. Not surprised, there is a lack of communication in the program and constantly giving students the run-around. I believe after the first semester they asked us about specialty, but I doubt they are going to ask you because they have a hard time finding any clinical sites let alone specialty units.

As of Fall 2021, all students of Emory are required to have the COVID vaccine.

No that was for one semester of clinical. The next semester only about 3 people had in person and the rest did virtually. In this last session, most of us have had clinical placements, but they were all med surg and it looks like most of us will have med surg for our senior practicum, not our specialty of choice.

Only two students in my cohort had clinical placements and they were going about twice per week. They are always 12-hour shifts.

I’ll be graduating in August. This semester we still have three days of classes and need to complete 8 12 hour shifts in this session. Most students are having to do 2 shifts per week. It varies depending on the session and the student. Nothing is ever consistent student to student.

There are only supposed to be 2 trips, 2 weeks at the beginning and 2 weeks at the end. Some people have had to come back multiple times though because lack of ability to find clinical placements. My only point of confusion is they accepted us into the program knowing where we lived, so if they couldn't find placements in that area why would they accept students there? It's very hard for those with families especially when the dates are only given to use a month or two ahead of time. Some students have had to work as many as 6 12 hour shifts in a row to get in the hours that they need. Which is a concern for student's mental and physical health, but also for patient safety. We also have students in our cohort driving up to 3 hours away for their placements. Also most of the hours are done on a general med-surg floor.

A lot of the problems go beyond just clinical aspects. A lot of the problems were not clear until returning from the first Atlanta trip.

You dodge a bullet with this one! Trust me, there are other programs out there that offer the same education for a cheaper price. It might take three extra months, but it will be worth it to avoid the DABSN program.

I am currently in this program. I would not recommend it to anyone. Every single aspect of the program is dysfunctional. Clinicals are pretty much non-existent. Leadership is rude and takes forever to respond to emails. Most of the program is spent in confusion and being unclear about timelines. Dates are constantly switching. It's impossible to plan anything.
