Currently a Travel Nurse - feel free to ask me anything about it.
Hi, I am nurse of 4 years in a Trauma Med Surg unit. I may take a traveling assignment for the first time in an area that I plan on moving eventually. There is only one position for med surg for travel nurse. My question is, what should I be looking out for as far as my contract, insurance any tips or advice. I am so new to this and my recruiter just kind of threw it all at me. The start date is December 21st and I almost feel she is being so pushy to get my info out there so I get the job compared to the other applicant since she said I was a far better canidate. I only called her to learn more about travel nursing and basically by the end of the call she is telling me I may have interview this Friday? Just wasnt expecting that. Thanks in advance!

L&D at a small hospital- is it worth it?
L&D is the reason why I became a nurse. I started out in Trauma Med-surg for my first 3 years. I am moving to a new town and figured this is the best time for me to apply to L&D. I applied and got an interview. The hospital I applied to is very small. Any high risk pregnancy or sick baby gets flown to a bigger hospital in the next city over. So they do not have a NICU or mother baby unit. Mothers stay from labor to birth and L&D nurses do it all. The unit has 5 L&D beds and about 7 PP beds. I have heard from other nurses at other small hospitals who say they get called off or are put on call all the time working in a small hospital. The hospital is about 45 mins away from where I will live, which isn't a problem, its what I drive now to work, but being called off or put on all frequently could become an issue. I am in the middle of building a house and of course we all have other bills, so my question is, is L&D in a small hospital slow? Are you getting called off often? I cannot afford to be called off frequently, so I am not sure what to do. The next L&D unit is 2 hours away so this is the only L&D option for me.

Labor & Delivery New Grad Residency
It looks like they are hiring only PRN nurses in labor and delivery. Here is the link to the website: https://careers.shands.ufl.edu/psc/ufhealth/JOBS/HRMS/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_APP_SCHJOB.GBL?FOCUS=Applicant&FolderPath=PORTAL_ROOT_OBJECT.HC_HRS_CE_GBL2&IsFolder=false&IgnoreParamTempl=FolderPath%2cIsFolder

Labor & Delivery New Grad Residency
I do not, I just remembered seeing that when I was looking around for a Labor and Delivery position. I lived in Gainesville at the time and remembered how sad I was that the Gainesville Shands didn't have the residency program. I do know the hospitals in Orlando have a residency program for new nurses, but I don't think for labor and delivery, may have to look into that.

Missed posted Job opportunity
I didn't even think of that! That does make sense because they were posted in June. Thank you for your feedback!

Missed posted Job opportunity
I am a registered nurse of 4 years on a Trauma Med surg unit. I am currently going to relocate into a new city in 4 months. There is only one hospital that has a labor delivery unit that is within a reasonable drive that I had looked into. They had posted 3 labor and delivery RN positions with bonus pay. The requirements was a license, BLS and PALS certificate and 1 year of medical experience. I was going to apply right after I finished up the PALS class. The next day the all positions were not available anymore. I am just devastated because this is the unit I really want to work on. I would even do mother baby or anything related to these types of units but nothing is posted. My question is, should I email the manager to I guess introduce myself, ask if the positions were filled and state that I will be moving down in 4 months and am seeking a for an RN position on their floor? Of course it would be much more professional then that and maybe attach my resume? The next hospital or any women's facility is at least 2 hours away, so this hospital is my only hope.
