Samuel Merritt University BEWARE Apps
Hi all! I'm a provisional admit and #5 on the waitlist for this Fall '23 cohort in San Mateo. Luckily, if things do not work out, I have admission for Spring '24. However, Samuel Merritt is my last resort as it's an earlier start date than other ABSN programs/ ABSN is already limited here in NorCal. I was wondering from the current/ graduated students if working part-time is doable? I've heard many students do per-diem jobs and that works out. As for those who moved out to be closer to the school how is that? I know rent is pricey in they bay ? Just trying to get a sense of some things as I'm somewhat already in the dark with finding out one of the advisor's for San Mateo is no longer employed anymore and it takes very long to hear back from staff unless you reach out to them... Especially regarding the waitlist updates I always had to email first about it, but they mentioned they'd let me know whenever there was a change ?

Samuel Merritt University ABSN Fall 2023
Hi guys! I just emailed the Associate Dean and he had let me know there was an update in the waitlist. I was originally placed #11 and now #5. I also reached out to a current student who just finished her first term of the ABSN program in San Mateo. She mentioned that there were 3 semesters, 9 terms, and each of those terms are 5 weeks long. Each term you'd be taking 2 classes. Her first term consisted of online zoom lectures and one in person skills lab once a week from 8-4, but each term the schedule changes as you'd be taking diff classes. Week 5-10 (second term), would be the heaviest since that's when you start clinicals on top of your two lectures, skills lab, and she mentioned that clinical could either be two 8 hr shifts or one 12 hr shift. Clinicals depends on what placement you get so there's the am shifts (6:30/7 am - 3 pm) or pm (3-11 pm). She also mentioned commuting is manageable as many commute 1-2 hours. But personally I don't think I'd want to commute as classes and clinicals are early in the morning and the morning traffic in the bay ain't no joke ?

Samuel Merritt University ABSN Fall 2023
@futurenurse39 No, I haven't heard back yet. When I went to the Nursing Seminar in June I spoke to the advisor for San Mateo and he had told me mine might still be in review due to one of my references submitting their Letter of Rec later, pushing back my app. I then email recently and he replied on July 12th saying to expect a response/ decision within 10 business days. I still have not heard back at all ?

Samuel Merritt University ABSN Fall 2023
Hi guys! Wondering if you guys also applied for the June deadline? Still haven't heard back but when I had attended the nursing seminar, (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) (advisor for San Mateo) had mentioned to me that it's still in review. I'm hoping I hear before the end of this month so it at least gives me a little more time to prepare

Samuel Merritt University ABSN Fall 2023
Hi everyone! So today is the second day of the Nursing success seminar for me! Just wanted to let those know that one of the advisors said that those who have applied for the Fall 2023 (June 1st especially) decisions/ emails should have been sent out already. But there are few students that they are still reviewing! So there's hope if you're still waiting. But also make sure you have everything submitted as anything missing can put your app on hold or held back. Also make sure to check spam/ junk folder!

@mnsmith I'm sure another program would accept you. SMU still has Spring '24 due on the 1st and their Summer I and II programs as well. If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats? @fw-futurenurse-11 Program starts in November! I forget if it's this forum, but many current and past students have mentioned issues and their complaints about the school

Samuel Merritt University ABSN Fall 2023
Hi everyone, I'm very new to the chat! Just graduated from Sac State last May and applied for the Fall 2023 Cohort for the San Mateo campus as they had extended the due date to June 1st, made TEAS/ HESI optional, as well as allowing Public Speaking/ Oral Communication acceptable in place of Interpersonal Communication. Reading this forum made me a little nervous based on the reviews regarding management which is wild as how can the school be unorganized and leave students in the dark, especially with the uncertainty of exit projects, pinning ceremony, etc. I understand the price as it is a private school. But, knowing this program is already half the time of a regular program and with all the concerns current students are mentioning, I'd rather not want any more added stress but I don't think I'd decline if given the offer as most of the programs I am also looking into are for Spring '24 and I am eager to start as soon as I can. It's just so crazy as I've been joining many of the ABSN Q&A Zoom sessions and the advisors make it seem like SMU is a whole experience, you'll get a great education, etc.

Samuel Merritt University- FALL 2021 START
Hi to all! I am unsure of what my GPA is for prereq and science as I still have two pre reqs (microbio and nutrition) to take! I recieved A's on most, recieving 2 B's for Chem and Soc, and sadly 1 C for child development. I have other certifications pertaining to Covid Contact Tracing and Cultural/ Competent Nursing care as well as partaking in online volunteering services due to Covid for many months! I have read from another person that SMU may not require the HESI? Who knows LOL, but I am sure there will be other factors that will play a role in one's admission other than GPA ?
