  1. So, ok, I called up my current school (haven't started yet, accepted but start in the fall) and the woman who answered the phone was SOOOOO NASTY to me. She didn't want to answer any of my questions and she wouldn't tell me any names of adivsors or admissions representatives!! She just kept sighing into the phone and talking over me. "Let me send you our brochure! Let me send you our brochure!!" But the questions I'm asking typically aren't answered in brochures, you know? I'm asking pretty specific questions. Help! How does one handle a hostile staff? How do you get through the nasty staff to get to admissions people?
  2. I'm starting pre-reqs in the fall. I want to brush up on my science and math skills now. It's been a whiile since I've been in a science or math class. Anybody want to suggest any books? I've got the whole ". . . for Dummies" thing going on and the ". . . . Demystified" series as well. Any others you suggest as primers/refreshers?
  3. Soko2002: Fair enough, but I have checked. Two problems: 1. Some of those classes (such as English) are included as the pre-reqs to the nursing programs, and 2. in nearly every school in nyc (at least public schools, of those i've checked, of those i'm interested in) you're not allowed to retake a course that you already have a grade for, no matter what school you're from
  4. There is a big difference between being introverted and shy. I'm very introverted, i.e., I much prefer to be alone than in big crowds, being in big crowds, while I enjoy it, often exhausts me. Whereas, an extrovert is typically energized by being in big crowds and unhappy with being alone. But I'm not shy at all.
  5. I know many schools cut off applicants based solely on their GPAs. Have any of you had this situation or heard of this situation and were able to overcome it successfully? I was in college many years ago (about 4-5). I didn't do so great. There are a couple of Cs here and there, none of which are in the pre-req sciences, but they are there in my overall GPA. I am planning on beginning my nursing science pre-reqs this fall and planning ( ) on making all As. Is this a pointless endeavor if because of my poor grades in a past life, I will be immediately excluded? Is there a way around this? Your feedback is welcome. Thank you. Lee Lee
  6. To be fair, everyone needs to vent and I'd imagine this might become a comfortable place to do it. I love the job I have now (more or less) and I have to vent plenty about it. Doesn't mean I hate it. Watch, in a few years we will be the "negative nurses" on this board who love our jobs, but definately need some outlet to, well, ***** about the hard and sucky parts of the job. :wink2:
  7. Thank you for this thread. I'm a return-to-schooler, 26 yrs old, and preparing to begin work on my pre-reqs for nursing. This is a fairly big risk I'm taking because I can't really afford to just keep changing careers. Threads like that "No" thread terrify me and make me re-think my plan! I hate it. I want to be a nurse for several reasons. For practical reasons, pay, benefits, hours, and for altruistic reasons. I don't understand why people complain about nursing pay. I know salaries vary depending upon where you live, so that may play a part in it. But every nurse I know makes really good money. Not to mention that working for a hospital gives you access to hella benefits. Every nurse I know is making at least $50,000. I know of nurses making over $ 80,000! I can definately live on that! Hours? Working3 - 4 days on and 3 - 4 days off sounds great to me. Is it hard work? Absolutely. Guess what? Any job that you want to do well in will be HARD. It will be challening. There will be days when it absolutely sucks. There will be days when you just cant' deal with one more x. I'm not looking for an easy job. Plus, my plans don't end at being an RN. I plan to go on and become a Nurse Practitioner and potentially get an MPH. I want to go into public health. I don't plan to be in direct patient care for the next 20 years. So, hopefully, with an ever evolving career, I can avoid the burn out that comes from doing the same thing for many many years. I think any job I might be in, if I were doing it for 10 or 15 or 20 years, I think I'd probably hate it too, lol, no matter how fulfilling it might have once been. But that's just me.
  8. I have just submitted my application to Lehman for my pre-reqs. I want to apply to the nursing program there as well. One of my bigger reasons for choosing Lehman was the fact that if offered child care at night and on weekends so I could take my pre reqs at night or on weekends.
  9. Hello all, I am interested in a pretty specific demographic here: single mothers wishing to go to nursing school (or already in nursing school). I am a 26 year old single mom who passed up many opportunities to attend nursing school in my BC days (Before Child). Now that I am getting older, my son is starting kindergarten soon, I feel like it's now or never. I am ready to go back to school to complete my Bachelor's degree and I've decided to try to get into a nursing program. I am terrified! I don't know how I'm going to (1) afford it and (2) work out child care. I would love to speak to other women in a situation similar to mine. Care to share? Offer advice? Stories? Lee Lee
