  1. Hello everyone! I'm looking for general information about the culture and work life at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP). I am in the process of setting up an interview for their Intermediate Critical Care Training Residency and would love to chat with someone that works there or who has been through their residency programs to get an idea of what the "vibe" is like. If anyone is comfortable sharing, I would also love information on their current employment contract (shift differentials, PTO etc). Thank you in advance!
  2. Nothing from either unit. I listed PICU in my original cover letter and replied to the email about Adult ED.
  3. I applied to ICN and PICU, I haven't heard anything yet. I saw one post that said someone got an email for Peds CVICU but that's it so far.
  4. Just got a similar response, mine said that my application has been routed to the managers based on my preferences. It said that they will contact me within the next two weeks individually if they want to interview me, did not specify email or phone. I listed ICN, Peds CVICU and Peds ICU. I'm sure these units are super popular so the managers will screen the people HR forwarded and then decide who they want to interview.
  5. Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows what type of unit the Summit Unit at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is? Considering applying for a position but the requisition doesn't say anything about what kind of unit it is (med surg, critical care etc...)
  6. My understanding is that we'll find out if we got selected for interviews with specific departments by Feb 3rd. In theory some people could have multiple departments request an interview and some could have none. Not sure how many interviews each department will want, the Talent/HR person I interviewed with said the Feb 3rd update would have info about the process moving forward.
  7. I am working on my objectives for preceptorship, I'm doing my hours in a Level III NICU. Some of my individual objectives may not apply because I'm in a niche specialty but here is the list of suggestions that my school gave us as a starting point: 1 Evaluate the SNI (staff nurse 1) job description and unit competencies on unit precepting for potential growth and development during preceptorship, by the end of the first week. 2 Prioritized patient care in collaboration with preceptor by stating rationale of prioritization to the preceptor by end of first week of preceptorship. 3 Give successful SBAR handoff at transfer of shift to oncoming RN by second week of preceptorship 4 Effective utilization of time management and documentation of patient assessment for full patient assignment by the third hour of shift by end of second week of preceptorship 5 Administer IVP medication using 9 rights and evaluate effectiveness of outcomes by second week 6 Evaluate each MD order, in collaboration with preceptor, for appropriateness and integration with the plan of care as observing preceptor acknowledge new orders by end of second week 7 Make phone call to MD, including gathering appropriate clinical and lab data prior to making the call, then call the MD using SBAR by second week. 8 Perform admission assessment and ascertain patient’s preferred learning style within 8-hour period of accepting admission and document successfully by end of third week 9 Perform discharge of patient including patient education of new medications and document successfully by end of third week. 10 Interact and collaborate with ancillary personnel such as preadmit RN’s, case management, social services, discharge planners by 4th week. 11 Perform appropriate delegation with recognition of ancillary staff’s scope of practice and perform follow-up of intervention delegated by 4th week of preceptorship. 12 Perform sterile dressing change with PICC dsg,, Foley insertion or other sterile dressing procedure successfully by the final week of preceptorship. I know this is an old thread, but anyone have suggestions for objectives specific to NICU?
  8. The UCSF website has been updated! Application goes live Jan 6th 2023 and program start is the first week of April. I haven't been able to find details about the application requirements yet https://nursing.ucsfmedicalcenter.org/nursing-training-programs#New-Nurse-Residency-Training-Program-NNRTP
  9. Depending on where you live you may be able to report the animal abuse to directly to animal control. The county that I live in has an online form that you can submit and they contact you +/- the local police depending on what is reported. Reporting him may get the animal rehomed but unfortunately is not likely to prevent him from owning more animals even if he is prosecuted ? I agree with the other commenter about reporting the MJ smoking to your agency since that directly affects your vented patient.
  10. Hi everyone, just looking for some general guidance! I am in my final semester of nursing school and recently found out that I am doing my preceptorship in the NICU (!!!). This was my first choice and I'm really excited but I am not really sure where to start in terms of reviewing content. I'm going to a level III unit that does not see surgical cases but is part of a hospital that has a good sized birth center and receives transfers from more rural hospitals. Any suggestions on how I should focus my review before I start? My maternal child rotation was about a year ago and I got to spend time on L&D, NICU and PP in the same hospital I am precepting at.
  11. @asanjose I took the TEAS in October, I think we found out a couple weeks ahead. There is no flexibility on the testing date if you want SRJC to pay for it. If you want to take it earlier or on a different day then you have to pay for it. Background check and TB testing requirements are gone over during orientation, which was The first week of December for us. Your timeline may be a bit different because my cohort wasn’t initially notified of admission offer until the end of august. Just get your vaccine and health requirements information together, they give you a pretty narrow window in December to do the background check and upload all the health related documents. Do not do your TB test early! I had been TB tested for my job in October and I had to do it again in December for SRJC.
  12. @sksaggu1998 email or canvas message your course coordinator and they should be able to send you the PowerPoint or they may have recorded it! There were people that got into my group less than a week prior and they made it work, congrats!
  13. @asanjose you’re going to do great! They don’t specifically require you to have insurance but the titer testing for vaccines and other health requirements might be expensive without it. If you’re looking at losing benefits when you go per diem or part time, get your titers done early. I started in Spring and did titers in august. I ended up having to do my hep B vaccine series again because my titer was negative, but all the others were fine. Plan to get a flu shot in the fall and your Covid vaccine if you haven’t gotten it already. If you’ve already done the TEAS, they won’t make you do it again. They will give you pretty strict deadlines on submitting things, but they don’t want things early. They have 200+ students and the amount of documents and email the admissions coordinator gets is insane. They’ll give you a date to submit things, just get your ducks in a row and keep copies of everything.
  14. The dosage calculations book that is on the book list was really confusing for me and I only used it for the questions we needed to do for the skills lab. I signed up for the Straight A Nursing bootcamp and loved it, it’s a self paced prep course for nursing school. There are a few nursing Youtube channels that cover dose calcs that my classmates liked. I had a strong background in dosage calcs coming from veterinary medicine so I honestly just did a few sets of practice problems and was good to go. It’s not meant to be super hard problems but they’re very strict about the required score to pass. There was someone that was dropped from our cohort for this reason. We get three chances to pass the test, but you’ll be so busy with other things that you’ll just want it done with on the first try. Be comfortable converting from household measurements to metric and know things like how many mL are in a Liter, how many mL are in a teaspoon etc. there is a dose calcs test each semester so the problems increase in difficulty as you go along.
