I don't think chemistry is designed to be a walk in the park by any means so yes, there are concepts that are difficult to grasp initially. If you put in the time, do the practice problems, and have decent math skills (I had my first degree in a math background so this helped me a lot), these more difficult concepts will be easier to understand after spending the additional time working problems, going back through the book, researching YouTube clips with possible alternative explanations, and watching each lecture presentation. Overall, I thought the design and content were absolutely fair. The self-paced layout was extremely nice and allowed me to get several weeks done in the span of three or four days As far as completing the course, it took me roughly 12 weeks from start to finish. That was also with the lab portion so I'm sure just taking the lecture portion will allow you to get it done even faster!

I thought the lab was a good learning tool and certainly helped to understand some concepts. If you don't NEED the lab for whatever you are working toward, I wouldn't worry about taking it. I say this mostly because of financial reasons, to be honest. Along with the extra credit hour, you are required to buy a lab paq (roughly $200) that has materials used for the entire lab section. If you're willing to spend the extra money and may potentially need the lab requirement down the road, by all means, go for it, they are pretty interesting experiments. If you don't need the lab, there are alternative routes to help understand concepts (YouTube has a lot of good educational videos on specific topics).

I'm assuming you're talking about general chemistry? I just got done taking Gen Chem I and will say that with each week's content, you will most likely put in 2-4 hours doing practice problems that will help you understand the content for quizzes and exams. The labs can be a little time consuming depending on how precise and accurate you wish to be....typically anywhere from 3-4 hours per lab (with some overnight waiting/drying mixed in for a couple of them) is enough. It took me about 11 weeks to get through everything and that was even with a few breaks I just wanted to take...if you're a good self motivator, there's no reason you couldn't get it done in a shorter timespan. I recently finished General Chemistry through University of New England and would recommend to anybody looking for a Chem pre-req (and lab, if needed). The class is entirely online and is designed as a self-paced class, allowing you to finish as fast or slow as you'd like. If you are taking the lecture portion only, the time you will spend is significantly less than taking it with the lab. I felt most of my time was spent working on labs and performing experiments. You will most likely spend anywhere from 2-4 hours working on practice problems that are assigned with weekly lectures but these problems are not collected....they are used strictly to help you understand the concepts and help a lot when taking quizzes and exams. If you are wanting a class that you can work on whenever you want and can work at your own pace, I strongly recommend this class.
