Unit practice councils
We just started having these and I'm confused. I thought they were all about best practice and improving care. Where I work they are now resposible for deceiding who will be in charge, making scheduals and basiclly how the unit is run. The hospital adminstration elimanated the Charge position having only Relief Charge nurses. This has caused a lot of back stabbing and clicks because now no-one is guiding the boat no captains , We're all the same level. I'm afraid we are going to capsize!

My best orientation mistakes
While on the surface some of this is funny many thing like the IV to tube feeding and the insulin error have truly been done and cost the life of pt. actions like this have caused TJC to regulate everything we do. Please think before you act and before you post on public forum. There are people out ther who will believe anything they read on the net.

What kind of holiday bonus do you get?
Used to get $20 gift card then were told we would have to pay taxes on it, then got a turkey or ham for a yr or two, now just the free dinner if you happen to work on the holiday. BTW for nights the holiday starts at midnight so if you work the night of , not night before you get NOTHING! And oh yes since our pt satisfaction points are down because we try to enforce our very liberal visiting hr (8am-10pm) and we don't allow cell phones, groups of more than 3, or visitors to bring in food and eat in front of our npo pt in a level I trauma surgical ICU, no raise this year either.

Pay Raise After Nursing Residency?
If you think $24.whatever is not enough for what you know after less than a year maybe you should take your over confident self somewhere else. I'm sure there are seasoned nurses who have been at you hosp. for 5-6 yrs and are making little more than you do. If you are in this just for the money bedside nursing will not get it. Get your masters write a book, do research, start a business, bedside nursing is not where the money is, it is however where the satisfaction can be found if you do your job well.

Senior RN Student w/ Jealous Husband!!!
Girl, get a lawyer, a restraining order and go to a shelter. Get your life back. Sorry if this sounds harsh but you can not take care of others if you can't take care of yourself. Nursing is FULL of nurses with dysfunctional lives, abusive alcoholic husbands , ungrateful mulnipulitive children and other family members. Either you get it together break free or become just one more angry, bitter, burned out nurse looking for fulfilment from taking care of others... called co-dependency.

Old nurses dont want to learn new tricks?
Listen everyone I'm not the one slamming old nurses. I responed to this thread several months ago and I can't even remember exactly what I said but I was stating how at least where I work it is the young trying to get rid of the old because they think they know everything. I'm ome of the few old nurses that have tried to hold on, but it get harder everyday.

Old nurses dont want to learn new tricks?
I agree that there seems to be a trend for the Young to be trying to get rid of the old, at least in my hospital. Over the last few years our T/SICU has seen a lot of very experienced nurses head out the door. Many have been made to feel their experience was not valued. Ours is a large unit that cares for everything from level one traumas to heart transplants. In the last 5 years the newer nurses with less than 3-4 years of experience have seemed to band together for the purpose of making life difficult for anyone over 40. Most of these young nurses have never worked in another hospital or even another another unit. I'm a tough old bird so I won't be easily run off. The real tradgdy is hundreds of years of experience has been lost and they don't know what their missing. The people who run the place just want the bodies and the cheaper the better, so to them it's better not to have someone who is looking to work to retirement. Keep'm young and keep the turn over. Save the benifits.
