Disappointment in NP Program
Yes, Basically as an NP student, the most that I have done in clinicals is assess patients. NOTHING more. I have been assessing patients my whole nursing career. Currently, I am doing pediatrics, my preceptor does not even allow me to assess patient's, only follow her around.

I am actually a current student in the FNP program at Spring Arbor University. I would NOT recommend this program to anyone I know.

Disappointment in NP Program
Oh I feel your pain, I am currently in an online university Spring Arbor University and I have learned- NOTHING. I cant even believe that this university is allowed to offer this program. I only stayed in it because I have invested way too much money. The FNP program is GARBAGE.

The first semester of clinical practicum you are allowed to complete only 125 hours. You can complete the hours how ever you would like. There is course work (SOAP notes, Modules assignments, Typhon logs, case presentation) are linked to specific clinical hours. After the first semester you can do 250 clinical hours. When doubling up hours, coursework is also doubled up.

No, the courses do NOT prepare you for the boards. Each week you are required to do one paper and one discussion board post/replies. Some classes also have a weekly quiz involved. Students are also required to read several chapters a week, which are irrelevant to the homework assignment. Since most students focus on just completing the assignments (busy work) there is little time to do the reading for the week. So there is barely any studying done for to prepare you for the boards. The assignments seem irrelevant to the boards. It is definitely like busy work. During the clinical practicum, you are required to submit 3 SOAP notes and 3 module assignments a week. Also you will have to log each patient that you see in clinicals into Typhon. Logging in a patient can take some additional work because you have to look up ICD-10 codes and medication classifications etc.. My particular clinical instructor would not approve my logs and asked for additional details regarding the clinical case, which would create more busy work. So if you are taking a class and also doing the clinical practicum, the homework can add up, especially if you are working or have a family. The whole program is based on the premises that students will teach themselves. Also the last course is a capstone course, many other FNP programs no longer have capstone courses. Also SAU does not have much of a reputation. (I personally wish I had chosen a university with a better reputation, so I would be proud to put the universities name down on my resume.)

I am actually a current student in the FNP program at Spring Arbor University. I would NOT recommend this program to anyone I know. I am almost complete with the program and I have not learned much from the courses. This university requires a statistics course which currently most universities do not require for the FNP program. This school also requires a total of 55 credits to be taken to receive your degree, where as most other schools require 44-48 credit hours to earn FNP degree. Another irrelevant required course is "moral and ethic decision making." Its a course that is usually required for an associates degree. Also this school requires a residency, which means that in the middle of January you will travel to Jackson, Michigan and spend three days there in order to be evaluated on your assessment skills. When you add in the cost of the hotel stay, airplane ticket, car, food etc.., it is may be an extra $1000. I do NOT recommend this program to anyone at all. Also during clinicals, your instructor will give you a rating from 1-3 on your performance. If you receive a "1" more then once, you will be suspended from the program. If you try to transfer your credit hours to another school, another graduate school will not accept more then 9-12 credit hours. I currently have one course remaining to complete the program and I can tell you, I am NOT prepared for the boards. Also currently I am playing $650 cr/hr but there is a registration fee of $40 and a technology fee of $100 each semester.
