I was! I was actually committed to Umass med before getting into MGH because those were the only two I applied to and Umass had the 15 day deadline. Umass seemed like a really great program, it just didn't feel like as great of a fit as MGH always did for me. With MGH, the clinical placements were a big deal to me because you are able to rotate at some of the best hospitals in the world. I currently work at one of the Boston hospitals and really wanted to stay in the area. I had also heard a lot of great things from NPs that I met with that had been preceptors for some of the MGH students and they said they always liked working with them because they had the most hands on experience. Some of them had said that they didn't actually know Umass had an NP/DNP program and I didn't love that (that could be on them though and not Umass' fault). I also liked the class size that the MGH program starts with, it starts with about 100ish people and then smaller cohorts for the NP portion, whereas Umass has a much smaller cohort. A smaller cohort is a plus for a lot of people though, just not as much for me. I also decided that my main concern at the end of the day was when I would get to start my career practicing as an NP, and as nice as it would be to graduate with a DNP, it just was not my ultimate goal right now since I am pretty eager to start working as an NP. They are both really great programs and it sounds silly but for me I just had to trust my gut feeling and after going to the accepted students day at MGH I'm really glad that I chose them. Does anyone know the date that the semester officially starts for the DEN program? I've emailed them a few times and they haven't answered, but I want to plan for when I have to move!

Hey guys! So I was accepted for acute care and will likely be attending as this was my top choice school. What really excites me about MGH is the opportunity for clinical rotations at the Boston academic hospitals. I currently work at Brigham and Women's Hospital which is a Partner's institution and I have had a great experience here and feel like a hospital similar to this one is a great place to learn as a nurse. From the current students I've spoken to, I've heard that most of the BSN clinical rotations are at MGH and you really can't ask for anything better than that since it is one of the best hospitals in the country. I am not positive where the other rotations are once you move onto the MSN portion, I'm sure it probably varies between specialties. The location was also really important to me as well since I am from just south of Boston I was hoping to stay in the area. I also really liked how they take a "holistic" look at applications, looking at each applicant as a whole instead of just looking at GPA and GRE scores, I felt like that says a lot about who they are as a school and who they train their students to be. I have also spoken to current nurse practitioners who are preceptors for NP students from multiple Boston programs and they have told me they always prefer the MGH students because they find they have the best hands on knowledge and experience due to all of the hands on practice that the school instills, they have found that some of the other schools teach students in a more "theoretical" way. Overall though, I found that there are so many great programs in the area but so much of it just comes down to personal preference and what you are most comfortable with/what excites you most!
