  1. Here is the guideline we use for our ports Hope it helps. Flushing: If port is not in use: Flush q month with 10 ml NS followed by 5 ml Heparin 100u/ml If port is being used: flush with 10 ml saline after each use (this can be the IV solution that is running) Dressing & needles are changed every 7 days or more frequently if either is compromised.
  2. We are all "customers" - I am the x-ray tech's customer etc. We all use the services of each other making us customers. It may take an extra minute to get a blanket for a family member or answer their questions, but whether we like it or not they are our customers. No we are not a hotel, but how much more important is it to treat our patients and families well since they are our "captive". THey are under stress from illness and lack of knowledge etc. THey have already given up most of their choices, dignity and freedoms. Put yourself in the patient and families place and think how you would want to be treated. Yes, sometimes they are impossible, but we can still be nice to them and go on giving our best care to the patient.
  3. I too was taught that it would take a whole tubing full of air to harm a patient, Nevertheless, I try to remove anything that is more than a "tiny" air bubble - for my patient's peace of mind and mine.
  4. I work in the Education & Staff Development dept at our hospital. It is great! We work some long hours, but our schedule is flexible and we get to set our own schedule. We do all kinds of education including CPR, ACLS, PALS etc recerts and coordinate educational programs for the staff. No weekends or holidays either.
