  1. Hi all! I’m a nursing student in my final semester, and my preceptorship is in a 20 bed SICU in a major city, level one trauma center. I have been there one day and it’s awesome so far! My preceptor keeps asking me “what do you want to see while you’re here?” And I am having a hard time coming up with an answer more specific than “anything you can show me!” because it’s all so new and fascinating at this point. Does anyone have any tips as to what I should ask to see to get the most out of this experience?
  2. I volunteered for a women's domestic violence response team, a hospice, and a program through the state police that helps drug addicts get into treatment. Honestly, my best advice is find something you're passionate about and it won't feel like a drain on your time. I did not love hospice so I wasn't able to stick that out very long, but I volunteered with the domestic violence response team approximately 60hrs/month for almost two years and it was an absolutely irreplaceable experience.
  3. Have you tried the "For Dummies" or "Made Incredibly Easy" series?? I really struggled with math and chemistry and these personally worked to make things 'click' for me.
  4. Hi there! I have definitely been in this situation and yes it can be very awkward to ask a professor for a letter of recommendation if you don't know them very well, but they are are certainly used to this and it is part of their job to write letters. Before I decided to go to nursing school, I applied to 10+ grad programs so I asked for a lot of letters! I usually would send an email saying "Hi, I was in X class with you, I received X grade, would you feel comfortable writing me a recommendation letter for X?" Offer to send your CV so that they get a better sense of you as a whole person, and include any volunteer work or extracurricular activities on that. Sometimes they will want to meet with you to discuss it, other times they will just ask where they need to submit it. The worst a professor could say is "no", and then you move on to the next one :) I think especially if your professors were NPs and you express an interest in going into nursing, they would be happy to write you recommendations if you did well in their classes. Best of luck!
  5. Hi all, I start my accelerated BSN in 61 days (not like I'm counting) and I am starting to get nervous for no specific reason. Honestly I just can't wait for it to start because I feel like once it does, it will fly by because it's only 3 semesters, so this time next year I will be almost ready to graduate. But ticking down the clock to start has really put me on edge. Anybody else in this situation? Have anything exciting/fun planned for the time before you start school?
  6. So, I just received my school's Clinical Health Requirement packet to fill out and complete. There is a form to opt out of the flu vaccination that can be filled out by a medical provider IF the student has A) Guillian-Barre syndrome associated with receiving an influenza vaccine or B) a severe medical condition that would preclude the student from vaccination. These are the only options. No exemption for declining based on not agreeing with mandatory vaccination. There's an additional note stating that some clinical sites may not even accept this declination form even if you have a bona fide medical reason for not receiving the vaccine. I know this echoes what other posters have said, but just to give you some perspective from someone currently filling out the paperwork for nursing school and clinical sites, not being vaccinated is not an option for me.
