Yes, next semester will Be online. I’m not sure how things will change for you throughout the program depending on Covid, but as of now due to Abotts order, 1st years students can complete 50% of clinical hours online and final year can do 100% online. It will probably change by next Summer though. So as of now, you will be doing 48 hours on site for each class in the first and second semester, and the remaining 48 will be online via case studies and sims (shadow health and swift river). And then you will be doing everything online for third and fourth so you won’t go to hospitals at all for peds or OB. You will probably go to lab 1-2 times for each class. I haven’t been on to the hospital since Summer for mental health since I am in the 3rd semester right now. As far as I know, advanced will be all online but we will be doing management at the hospitals.

You’re welcome! It’s definitely overwhelming at first. And I was not required to purchase the Davis Med Surg book. Only Summer 20 cohort and Spring 20 that didn’t advance. It didn’t make sense to make us purchase it to only need it for advanced! We use Lemone.

I just looked at y’all’s list- the nursing diagnosis handbook is not required for y’all they must’ve phased it out. Yes, we used Essentials with the study guide. You will need the study guide because there is several required assignments you will have to turn in from it.

Oh also, you don’t need medical dictionary. Haven’t opened mine to this day.

You will use essentials for clinical assignments in commons and possibly complex I believe- but other than that it’s mostly for semester 1. My cohort was not required to purchase the concept mapping book, that changed with the Summer cohort. So not sure about that. Definitely will need the drug guide for the whole program, and some instructors will NOT allow ebooks in clinical so you need a physical copy. I can tell you I only used the nursing diagnosis book a handful of times and I’m finishing up semester 3. You will definitely need your med surg book for the whole program as well (even speciality classes, especially peds) but I know they changed that and they go back and forth between whatever y’all are required to get and the “old” med surg book, Lemone. I’ve heard from several classmates that did not advance through Summer and purchased lemone for semester 1 and then the were required to purchase the new med surg book for semester 2. Apparently they pull from and reference both text books- so do what that what you will. Don’t waste money on the Skills videos. I never watched them, you can Youtube anything you need to but you will be taught in lab anyways.

Honestly with everything online, you don’t have to go to school several times a week and you’ll probably only being going to clinical once a week. You most likely can get away with only 1-2 pairs of scrubs. I have 6 sets, but I started before Covid hit and was on campus 4 days a week plus I have 2 kids and sometimes I just didn’t have time to do laundry LOL As far as materials go, it depends on what kind of student you are. Everyone studies differently. Just the basic stuff! If you don’t already have one, invest in a good printer. You’re gonna get anywhere from 5-20 something page outlines/power points per chapter and you’ll also need to print out a ton of med sheet templates. I also purchased a laminator off of Amazon and that’s been really useful. Definitely stock up on pens! I suggest a foldable clipboard for clinical as well as small memo pads that will fit in your pocket to jot stuff down on, Highlighters if you use them, page markers/flags, post it’s, blank paper for concept maps (you won’t do those Until complex though). Invest in quality binders and organize your classes by exam, and if you really wanna get in depth do it by exam and by week. Not sure if you’ve seen the syllabus for foundations or any other course but generally, you’ll have 4 exams for each course plus ATI and each is worth ~20%, so tests are all your grade is based off of. ATI has levels 0-3 and each corresponds with 70-100%. Passing is 76% and there’s no rounding at all. For clinical you’ll need a pen light, a watch with a second hand (some instructors won’t allow you to use Apple watches plus they’re annoying because the screen shuts off while your doing apical), and of course a stethoscope.

I wouldn’t waste money on figs. Too expensive and you won’t be able to use them once you graduate. I only wear joggers. I wear med couture and healing hands purple label. I use a MacBook and so does the majority of my friends! It’s just personal preference honestly. I also have an iPad pro so things sync easily.

Yes, I’ve hate that management is going to be in the hospital- thank god! Exam 2 was rough and so was ATI, I also maintained a B and a Level 2. ATI was very random and most of the questions were over content we did not cover at all in theory. Theory was not that bad. Clinical was ? it depends on your instructor but some are veryyyyyyyy particular and will grade extremely tough. My group ended up doing 3 times the amount of work as any other group. I feel you about struggling with adaptations, it added so much busy work to our plate. So glad it’s over though LOL

Every alumni I know has had a job lined up before they graduated. Yes it’s been difficult but I’m hanging in there LOL I just want to be done honestly! Hahaha it’s okay! I had all the same questions when I started. You will purchase a patch from them ($5 each) that needs to be sewn onto the left upper arm of your scrubs. So you can buy whatever scrubs you want, just have to put the patch on them. We wear navy. You can also wear a white navy or black long sleeve shirt under your scrubs. If you want to wear a jacket it has to be a navy scrub jacket with a patch as well. But yes hopefully!

As of right now, due to Governor Abbots order, 50% of clinicals are online for first year students (semester 1 and 2) and 100% for second year students (semester 3 and 4). So, you still have to complete half of your clinical hours (48 hours is half) at a clinical site even though you will be doing online simulations and case studies for half. You will still do labs for skills on campus in small groups. I don’t know how much longer that will be in place. Things could change by the time you start and that order may not be applicable to you because you didn’t start during Covid/it may be canceled. Virtual clinicals suck and we are at a huge disadvantage all around. Employers are already asking how many hours were completed online vs at a site. The good thing is that BHS recruits directly from within their program, so we have that going for us. This is just how it is with Covid though, out of anyone’s control.

It’s going good so far. I’m half way through the 3rd semester. I took Peds this term and it’s definitely the hardest course so far. I’m starting OB on Monday. I’m not sure if we will be back on campus but I doubt it. Things are constantly changing, so they told us to expect to be online but to be prepared to come to campus when needed. So, no solid answers. I’m pretty sure it will be online to be honest. Even if it’s still online, You will need to come to campus to do lab and of course you have to do your clinicals.
